Washington ESD income requirements - how much do you need to make to qualify for unemployment?
I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington state. I worked part-time for about 8 months last year making around $18,000 total. My hours got cut drastically and now I'm only getting maybe 10 hours a week. Does anyone know what the minimum income requirements are for Washington ESD? I've been searching their website but it's confusing with all the base period stuff.

You need to have earned at least $4,025 during your base period to qualify for regular unemployment in Washington. The base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file your claim. With $18k over 8 months, you should meet the minimum wage requirement.

•Thanks! So if I made $18,000 over 8 months, that should be enough? I'm still working part-time so would I qualify for partial benefits?

•Yes, you can get partial benefits if you're working reduced hours. Washington ESD will reduce your weekly benefit amount based on how much you earn each week, but you can still collect something if your hours are cut significantly.

I had the same situation last year - part time work with reduced hours. The base period calculation is tricky but if you made $18k you should be fine. Just make sure you report all your part-time earnings when you file your weekly claims.

•Did you have trouble getting through to Washington ESD when you applied? I'm worried about the whole process.

•Honestly yes, calling them was a nightmare. Spent hours on hold and kept getting disconnected. But once I got through the initial application process went smoothly.

For anyone struggling to reach Washington ESD by phone, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much time when I needed to check on my claim status.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true given how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They handle the waiting and calling back for you so you don't have to sit on hold for hours.

The income requirement is just the first hurdle. You also need to have worked in at least 2 quarters during your base period and meet the job separation requirements. If you quit voluntarily or were fired for misconduct, you won't qualify regardless of how much you made.

•My hours were cut due to slow business, I didn't quit or get fired. Does that count as a qualifying separation?

Carmen Vega
•Yes, reduction in hours due to lack of work is considered involuntary and qualifies you for benefits. Just make sure you document that when you file.

•Unfortunately you need at least $4,025 in your base period to meet the minimum wage requirement. You might want to check if you qualify under the alternate base period though.

•whats alternate base period

•It uses the last 4 completed quarters instead of the first 4 of the last 5. Sometimes that can help if you worked more recently.

Update: I tried calling Washington ESD this morning at 8am sharp and still couldn't get through. The automated system just keeps saying high call volume and hangs up on me. This is so frustrating!

•Same thing happened to me for weeks. The phone system is completely overloaded.

•This is exactly why I used Claimyr. They keep calling back automatically until they get through, then call you when they have an agent on the line.

The Washington ESD website says you can also qualify if you earned at least $2,525 in your highest earning quarter AND total base period wages of at least 1.5 times your high quarter wages. So there are multiple ways to meet the income requirement.

Mateo Sanchez
•That's confusing. Can you break that down? I made about $2,800 in my best quarter.

Zoe Stavros
•If your highest quarter was $2,800, you'd need total base period wages of at least $4,200 (1.5 x $2,800). Since you made $18k total, you easily meet both requirements.

I'm in a similar boat - part time worker whose hours got slashed. Applied online last week and my claim is still pending. How long does it usually take for Washington ESD to process applications?
0 coins
Aisha Mahmood
•Initial processing usually takes 2-3 weeks if there are no issues. If they need to verify your work history or job separation it can take longer.

•Ugh, 2-3 weeks? I need to pay rent next week. This system is broken.

Pro tip: when you file your weekly claims, be super careful about reporting your part-time earnings. Even if you make $50 that week, report it. Getting caught not reporting earnings can disqualify you and create an overpayment.

•Good point. Do I report gross or net earnings?

Jamal Harris
•Always report gross earnings before taxes and deductions. Washington ESD has their own formula for calculating how much to deduct from your benefits.

Just wanted to add that if you don't qualify for regular UI, you might qualify for other programs. Washington has some additional assistance programs depending on your situation.

•What other programs? I haven't heard about those.

•There's WorkFirst, SNAP, and some county-specific programs. Check with DSHS if you don't qualify for unemployment.

The $4,025 minimum hasn't changed in years but everything else has gotten more expensive. It's ridiculous that people working part-time jobs can't get help when their hours get cut.

•exactly! minimum wage went up but the unemployment requirements stayed the same

Mei Wong
•Right? They need to update these requirements to reflect the current economy.

For what it's worth, once you do get your claim approved, Washington's maximum weekly benefit is pretty decent compared to other states. I think it's around $929 per week now.

Mateo Sanchez
•That's way more than I'd get with my income level. The benefit amount is based on your earnings, right?
0 coins
AstroAce
•Yes, it's calculated based on your highest earning quarter. You get roughly 3.85% of your total base period wages up to the maximum amount.

I tried using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned and it actually worked! Got connected to a Washington ESD agent in about 45 minutes instead of spending all day calling. Definitely worth it if you need to talk to someone urgently.

•Did they charge you for it? I'm hesitant to pay for something that should be free.

•There is a cost but honestly it was worth it to me. My claim was stuck in adjudication and I needed answers. Saved me days of frustration.

Thanks everyone for all the help! I'm going to file my application tomorrow. Sounds like I definitely meet the income requirements. Hopefully the process goes smoothly.

•Good luck! Make sure you have all your employer information ready and be patient with the system.

•File as early in the week as possible if you can. The system seems to be less glitchy Monday mornings.

One more thing - if you get denied for any reason, don't give up. You can appeal the decision. I got initially denied for a technicality and won my appeal.

Mateo Sanchez
•How long did the appeal process take?

Amara Okafor
•About 6 weeks from filing the appeal to getting the decision. But I got backpay for the whole period once I won.

The job search requirements are something to keep in mind too. Even if you're working part-time, you still need to be actively looking for work and document your job search activities.

Mateo Sanchez
•How many job searches do I need to do per week?
0 coins
Giovanni Colombo
•I think it's 3 job search activities per week, but check the current requirements on the Washington ESD website. They can change.

Just be prepared for the system to be slow and frustrating. I qualified easily but it took forever to actually get my first payment. Don't let it discourage you though - you deserve the benefits if you meet the requirements.

Mateo Sanchez
•Did you have to wait the full waiting week plus processing time?
0 coins
Fatima Al-Qasimi
•Yeah, there's a one week waiting period for regular UI claims, then processing time on top of that. Plan for at least 3-4 weeks before your first payment.
