How much do you have to make to get Washington ESD unemployment benefits?

I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment in Washington state. I worked part-time for the last year and a half making around $15/hour for about 25 hours a week. Before that I had a full-time job for 8 months but got laid off. I'm not sure if I made enough money to qualify for Washington ESD benefits. Does anyone know what the minimum earnings requirement is? I've been looking on the Washington ESD website but it's confusing with all the base period stuff.

In Washington, you need to have earned at least $3,850 in your base period to qualify for unemployment benefits. Your base period is the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim. You also need to have worked in at least 2 quarters during that time.

Thanks! So if I file now in January 2025, my base period would be January 2024 through December 2024?

0 coins

Not exactly - it would be October 2023 through September 2024. The base period doesn't include the most recent quarter. Washington ESD has a calculator on their website that can help you figure out your exact base period.

i think its more complicated than just the total amount. dont you also need to make a certain amount in your highest quarter? like i remember reading something about that when i applied last year

0 coins

You're right! You need to earn at least 1.25 times your highest quarter earnings in your other base period quarters combined. So if you made $2,000 in your best quarter, you'd need at least $2,500 total in the other three quarters.

This is getting complicated. Is there an easier way to check if I qualify without doing all this math?

Have you tried calling Washington ESD directly? They can look up your work history and tell you right away if you qualify. The only problem is getting through - I've been trying to reach them for weeks about my own claim issues. If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to a real person. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

Really? How does that work exactly? Do they just call for you or something?

0 coins

They handle the calling process and wait on hold for you, then connect you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get through myself.

0 coins

sounds too good to be true tbh. how much does something like that cost?

0 coins

The earnings requirement in Washington is actually pretty reasonable compared to other states. With your work history it sounds like you probably qualify, but you'll want to make sure all your employers reported your wages correctly to Washington ESD.

0 coins

How can I check if my wages were reported correctly? One of my employers was kind of sketchy about payroll stuff.

0 coins

You can request a wage statement from Washington ESD that shows all reported wages. If something's missing, you'll need documentation like pay stubs to prove the wages.

0 coins

WAIT A MINUTE - are you sure about those numbers? I thought the minimum was higher than $3,850. When I applied in 2023 I swear it was more than that. Did Washington change the requirements recently???

0 coins

The monetary requirements do get adjusted periodically, but $3,850 is correct for 2025. You might be thinking of the alternative base period requirements which are slightly different.

0 coins

ok that makes sense, i was probably confused about something else. this unemployment stuff is so complicated!

0 coins

Tell me about it. I've been trying to figure out my own eligibility for weeks and every time I think I understand something new comes up.

UPDATE: I tried calling Washington ESD this morning at 8am sharp and still couldn't get through. The automated system just hung up on me after 45 minutes on hold. This is ridiculous.

0 coins

Same thing happened to me yesterday! I called right when they opened and got disconnected twice. The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely terrible.

0 coins

This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. The regular Washington ESD phone system is basically impossible to get through on your own.

0 coins

Have you tried calling during lunch time? I've heard sometimes there's less volume around 12-1pm.

You can also check your eligibility by looking at your Social Security statement online. It shows your earnings by year and employer, which can help you calculate if you meet the Washington ESD requirements.

0 coins

That's a good idea! I never thought to check my Social Security records. Thanks for the tip.

0 coins

just remember that social security shows annual totals, not quarterly like washington esd uses for the base period calculation

0 coins

honestly the whole base period thing is confusing as hell. why cant they just look at your last 12 months of work like normal people would expect? the government makes everything so complicated

0 coins

It's because they need time to process and verify wage reports from employers. Using completed quarters ensures all the wage data is accurate and available.

0 coins

still annoying though. especially when you're already stressed about losing your job and trying to figure out if you can pay rent

0 coins

Pro tip: if you don't qualify under the regular base period, Washington ESD will automatically check your alternative base period. That uses the most recent 4 completed quarters instead of the first 4 of the last 5.

0 coins

Oh that's good to know! So they'll try both ways to see if I qualify?

0 coins

Exactly. They want to approve claims when possible, so they'll use whichever base period works better for you.

0 coins

I didn't know they did that automatically. I was stressing about which base period to use when I applied.

0 coins

Based on what you described - part-time for 1.5 years plus 8 months full-time before that - you should definitely qualify. That's way more than the minimum earnings requirement.

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear. I was worried because I only worked part-time recently.

0 coins

Part-time work counts just as much as full-time for qualification purposes. It's all about the total dollars earned, not how many hours per week.

0 coins

Make sure you apply as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. You can't get benefits for weeks before you file your claim, even if you were eligible.

0 coins

Good point. I lost my job last week so I should probably file this week.

0 coins

yeah dont wait around. i made that mistake and lost like 3 weeks of benefits because i thought i had to wait or something

0 coins

Exactly. There's a one-week waiting period anyway, so the sooner you file the sooner you can start getting paid.

0 coins

I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it was actually legit. Got connected to a Washington ESD rep in about 20 minutes instead of spending all day trying to call. They verified my earnings and explained exactly how much I'd get per week.

0 coins

Was it expensive to use? I'm already tight on money obviously.

0 coins

It's worth it when you consider how much time you save and the peace of mind of actually talking to someone. Way better than the stress of calling all day and getting nowhere.

0 coins

ok you convinced me, might have to try it if i cant get through on my own

0 coins

Quick question - do tips count toward the earnings requirement? I worked as a server and most of my income was tips that I reported on my taxes.

0 coins

Yes, reported tips count as wages for unemployment purposes in Washington. Make sure your employer reported them correctly though.

0 coins

Thanks! I was worried my mostly-tips income wouldn't count.

0 coins

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator where you can estimate your weekly benefit amount once you know you qualify. It's pretty helpful for planning your budget.

0 coins

I'll definitely check that out. Thanks for all the help everyone!

good luck with your claim! hope it goes smoothly for you
