Washington ESD unemployment qualification - how much do I need to make to qualify for unemployment benefits?
I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington state. I worked part-time for about 8 months last year making around $18,000 total. Is there a minimum amount you need to earn to be eligible? I've been looking at the Washington ESD website but the base year calculations are confusing me. Can someone explain this in simple terms?

You need to have earned at least $3,528 in your base year to qualify for Washington ESD benefits. Your base year is typically the first 4 quarters of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. So if you made $18,000 in 8 months, you should easily meet the minimum requirement.

•That's a relief! I was worried I didn't work enough. Do they look at total earnings or quarterly earnings?

Sean Doyle
•Both actually. You need the minimum total AND you need to have worked in at least 2 quarters of your base year. Sounds like you're good on both counts.

Wait I thought it was higher than that? I made like $4500 last year and they denied my claim

•There might be other factors. Did you work in multiple quarters? You also need to meet the work search requirements and be able and available for work.

•oh maybe thats it, i only worked like 3 months total

The Washington ESD uses a pretty specific formula. You need at least $3,528 in total base year wages AND your wages in your highest quarter must be at least 1.5 times your wages in your lowest quarter. Plus you need earnings in at least 2 quarters of your base year.

•Wow that's more complicated than I thought. How do I figure out what my base year quarters are?

•If you file today, your base year would be January 2024 through December 2024. Washington ESD looks at completed quarters only.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks to get clarification on my base year wages but can never get through. The phone system is impossible. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. Saved me hours of trying to get through. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•I guess that's true, but I'd rather know beforehand if I'm wasting my time

•It's not really wasting time though - the application process gives you a good idea of your base year wages anyway

Another thing to keep in mind - even if you qualify monetarily, you still need to meet all the other requirements. You need to be unemployed through no fault of your own, able and available for work, and actively searching for work.

•What counts as actively searching for work? Is there a minimum number of applications per week?
0 coins
Sean Doyle
•Washington requires at least 3 job search activities per week. These can be applications, networking, job fairs, etc. You need to keep a log in WorkSourceWA.

The system is so complicated for no reason. Why can't they just say you need X dollars and be done with it?

•It's to prevent people from working just one really good quarter and then collecting benefits. The multiple quarter requirement ensures you had consistent work.

•I guess that makes sense but it's still frustrating when you're trying to figure out if you qualify

Update: I looked at my pay stubs and I worked in 3 different quarters last year with pretty consistent earnings, so I think I should be good. Going to file my claim this week.

•Sounds like you meet all the requirements! Good luck with your claim.

I qualified with about $15,000 in earnings spread across 4 quarters. The key is having work in multiple quarters, not just the total amount.

•That's really helpful to know. How long did it take for your claim to get approved?

Carmen Lopez
•About 2 weeks for the monetary determination, then another week before I could start filing weekly claims.

Does anyone know if gig work counts toward the earnings requirement? I did some DoorDash and Uber last year.

•If you received 1099s for that work, it might count, but it's more complicated than W-2 wages. You'd need to contact Washington ESD directly to verify.

•This is exactly why I need to talk to someone at Washington ESD! The website doesn't clearly explain these situations.

I made $25,000 last year but all in one quarter because I had a seasonal job. Got denied because I didn't meet the multiple quarter requirement. It's not just about total earnings.

•Oh wow, that's exactly what I was worried about. Good thing I worked spread out over multiple quarters.

•Yeah definitely check your quarterly breakdown before filing. Could save you some disappointment.

The Washington ESD eligibility calculator on their website is actually pretty helpful if you have your wage information handy.

•I tried using that but couldn't find all my wage info. Some of my old pay stubs are missing.

•You can request your wage history from Washington ESD or check with your former employers for duplicate pay stubs.

•Don't give up yet! There might be other programs you qualify for even if regular UI doesn't work out.

•Things like SNAP, housing assistance, or local emergency aid programs. Check 211 for resources in your area.

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD to verify their earnings, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. I was on hold for literally 4 hours one day and got disconnected. Used Claimyr the next day and was talking to an agent within 45 minutes.

•Okay you convinced me, I'm going to try it. This is ridiculous how hard it is to reach them normally.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•Honestly it was worth whatever it cost considering the time and frustration it saved me. Much better than spending entire days trying to get through.

The earnings requirement is just the first hurdle. Even if you qualify monetarily, they can still deny you for other reasons during adjudication.

•What kind of other reasons?

GalacticGuru
•Reason for separation from work, availability issues, work search problems. Lots of ways claims can get held up.

I wish they would just send you a letter telling you exactly how much you earned in each quarter instead of making you guess

Luca Romano
•You can actually request that information from Washington ESD. It's called a wage transcript or earnings statement.

Amara Nnamani
•How do you request it? Online or do you have to call?

Luca Romano
•There should be an option in your eServices account, or you can request it by phone if you can get through.
