How much do you need to earn to qualify for Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington. I worked part-time for about 8 months last year making around $18,000 total. My friend said there's some minimum amount you need to have earned to get approved but I can't find clear info on the Washington ESD website. Does anyone know what the earnings requirement is? I'm worried I didn't make enough to qualify.

You need to have earned at least $3,800 in your base year to qualify for Washington unemployment. Your base year is usually the first four of the last five completed quarters before you file. So if you made $18k in 8 months you should be fine as long as it was spread across the right quarters.

•Thanks! What if most of my earnings were in the last 3 months of the year? Would that affect anything?

•It depends on when you file your claim. The base year quarters matter more than when in the calendar year you worked. You might want to use the alternate base year if your recent earnings were higher.

I think there's also something about needing to work in at least two quarters? Not 100% sure but I remember reading that somewhere when I filed last year.

•Yes, you need earnings in at least two quarters of your base year. And you need at least $481 in your highest earning quarter. There are actually several requirements you have to meet.

•Ugh this is getting confusing. Is there an easy way to check if I qualify without filing a whole claim?

I had trouble figuring this out too when I lost my job. The Washington ESD phone system is impossible to get through to ask questions. I spent hours calling and either got busy signals or got disconnected. Finally found out about claimyr.com which actually got me through to talk to someone at ESD. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration!

•Wait, what is Claimyr? Is it like a third party service or something?

Miguel Diaz
•Yeah it helps you get through to ESD agents when the phone lines are jammed. Way better than spending all day redialing.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that. Might have to check it out if I can't get through the normal way.

The earnings requirement is just one part. You also have to be unemployed through no fault of your own, able and available to work, and actively seeking work. Don't forget about the job search requirements - you need to make at least 3 job contacts per week.

•What counts as a job contact? Does applying online count or do you have to call them?

•Online applications count. You just need to keep a log of your job search activities. The WorkSourceWA website has good info on what qualifies.

i qualified with way less than 18k so you should be good. the bigger issue is whether you quit or got fired because that affects eligibility more than how much you made

•I got laid off when they cut hours and I couldn't afford to keep working so few hours. Think that counts as no fault of my own?

Ava Johnson
•That could be tricky. If you voluntarily quit even due to reduced hours, ESD might consider it a voluntary separation. You'd need to show you had good cause for leaving.

Let me break down the monetary requirements more clearly: 1. At least $3,800 total earnings in base year 2. Earnings in at least 2 quarters of base year 3. At least $481 in your highest earning quarter 4. Your total base year earnings must be at least 1.25 times your highest quarter If you don't meet these with your regular base year, you can request alternate base year which uses more recent quarters.

•This is super helpful! Where did you find all this info? The ESD website is so confusing.

•It's buried in their handbook. I learned it the hard way when my first claim got denied and I had to appeal.

•That 1.25 times rule is what got me. Made plenty overall but it was all in one quarter so I didn't qualify initially.

Just apply and see what happens. The worst they can say is no and then you know for sure. The online application walks you through everything and tells you if you qualify.

•True but if you don't qualify you might have issues later if you try to file again. Better to know beforehand.

•Yeah I don't want to mess up my record if I'm not eligible. Trying to figure it out first.

THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED ANYWAY!!! I made $25k last year and still got denied because of some technicality about when I worked. These requirements are designed to keep people from getting benefits they deserve.

•The requirements exist for good reasons - to ensure benefits go to people who have established work history and lost jobs involuntarily. But I agree the system can be frustrating to navigate.

•Easy for you to say when you're not the one getting denied for BS reasons!!

Your $18k should definitely qualify you monetarily. The real question is going to be the reason for separation from your job. Make sure you have documentation about the layoff or hour reduction.

•I have emails about the schedule changes but nothing official about being laid off. Will that be enough?

Paolo Rizzo
•It's a start. Try to get something in writing from your employer about the reduction in hours/work available if possible.

I used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked great. Got through to ESD in like 10 minutes instead of calling all day. They confirmed my eligibility over the phone before I even filed online.

•That sounds amazing. Is it expensive to use?

•They focus on just getting you connected so you can get answers directly from ESD. Worth it to avoid the calling nightmare.

•Might have to try that myself. I've been trying to reach them about my adjudication for weeks.

Wait can someone explain the base year thing again? I'm so confused about which quarters count and when.

Dmitry Smirnov
•Base year is the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. So if you file in January 2025, your base year would be Oct 2023 - Sep 2024.

Oliver Fischer
•Ohhhh that makes more sense. So it's not just the last 12 months, it's specific quarters.

Don't forget you also have to register with WorkSource within a certain timeframe after filing. That's another requirement people forget about.

Sofia Perez
•When do you have to register? Right away or is there a grace period?

Natasha Ivanova
•I think it's within the first week but double check that. They'll tell you in your approval letter if you qualify.

My sister went through this same thing last year. She was worried about not earning enough but turns out the bigger issue was proving she was looking for work. Make sure you understand the job search requirements before you start claiming.

•Good point. I should probably start looking for jobs now even before I file the claim.

•Definitely. And keep records of everything - applications, contacts, interviews, all of it.

honestly the hardest part isn't qualifying its dealing with their broken phone system and website that crashes all the time

•Exactly why I ended up using Claimyr! Their website shows exactly how it works too.

•yeah might have to check that out because calling ESD directly is hopeless

One more thing - if you worked in multiple states, that can complicate things. You might need to file in the state where you earned the most wages, not necessarily where you live now.

•All my work was in Washington so I think I'm good there. Thanks for thinking of that though!

•Perfect, that makes it much simpler. Washington's system is actually pretty good once you get through the initial hurdles.

Bottom line: $18k in 8 months should qualify you monetarily as long as it was spread across at least 2 quarters and you meet the other ratios. The separation reason will be more important to focus on.
