Can't get through to Washington ESD unemployment office - phone system nightmare
I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for over two weeks about my pending claim and it's impossible. The phone just rings busy or hangs up after being on hold for hours. My claim has been stuck in adjudication since I filed in early January and I can't get any answers about what's holding it up. I've tried calling first thing in the morning, during lunch, even late afternoon - nothing works. The online system just shows 'pending' with no explanation. Getting really stressed about rent coming up. Anyone else dealing with this phone system disaster?

Same exact problem here! Been trying for 3 weeks to get through about my job search verification issue. The phone system is completely broken.

•It's so frustrating! Did you try any other numbers or just the main one?

•I tried every number I could find online but they all go to the same overloaded system

The Washington ESD phone system has been overwhelmed since the new year. Best times to call are right at 8am when they open or around 1pm during lunch shift change.

•I've tried calling at 8am sharp multiple times but still can't get through

AstroAdventurer
•Yeah even those times aren't guaranteed anymore. The volume is just too high right now

I had this same issue last month until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents by phone. Worked for me within a day - finally got to talk to someone about my adjudication. Check out claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of this - is it legit? How much does it cost?

Mei Liu
•Yeah it's real, they basically keep calling for you until they get through. I didn't pay attention to the cost since I was desperate but it was worth it to finally talk to someone

•I was skeptical at first but tried Claimyr when I couldn't reach anyone about my overpayment notice. Actually got connected to an agent the same day

For adjudication issues specifically, you need to reach the claims center directly. Regular customer service can't help with pending claims under review. The adjudication process typically takes 4-6 weeks but they should be able to give you an update on what documents they're waiting for.

•How do I reach the claims center directly? Is that a different number?

Amara Chukwu
•It's the same main number but you have to navigate through the phone tree to get to claims specialists. Press 1 for English, then 1 for file a claim, then 4 for claim status

Giovanni Conti
•That phone tree never works for me - it just disconnects after waiting on hold forever

ugh this is exactly why i hate dealing with government agencies. spent 4 hours on hold yesterday just to get disconnected. washington esd needs to fix their phone system

Zoe Papadakis
•4 hours?? That's insane. I thought my 2 hour waits were bad

Fatima Al-Hashimi
•yeah and then it just hung up on me. so frustrating

While you're waiting to get through, make sure you're continuing to file your weekly claims. Even if your claim is in adjudication, you still need to maintain your weekly certifications or you could lose benefits for those weeks.

•Good point - I have been filing weekly. At least that part of the system works
0 coins
Jamal Carter
•Wait, you can file weekly claims even when it says pending? I thought I had to wait
0 coins
AstroAdventurer
•@profile6 Yes, always keep filing weekly claims unless you're specifically told to stop. The system will catch up and pay retroactively once adjudication is complete

Try calling right at 12:01pm when they come back from lunch break. Sometimes there's a brief window where you can get through before the lines jam up again.

Zoe Papadakis
•Interesting tip - I'll try that tomorrow

•It doesn't always work but I've had better luck during those transition times

The whole system is a joke. I've been calling for a month about my disqualification and can't get through to appeal it properly. Meanwhile my unemployment is cut off and bills are piling up.
0 coins
Zoe Papadakis
•That's awful - disqualification appeals are time sensitive aren't they?
0 coins
Giovanni Conti
•Yeah you only have 30 days to appeal and I'm running out of time. This is a nightmare
0 coins
Amara Chukwu
•For appeals you can also file online through your SecureAccess Washington account. Don't wait for phone contact if you're running up against the deadline

Just wanted to follow up - I used Claimyr again yesterday for a different issue and got through in about 3 hours. Way better than the weeks I spent trying on my own. Really recommend it if you're stuck like I was.

•Good to know it works consistently. I might have to try it if I can't get through this week

•I tried Claimyr last week after seeing it mentioned here. Finally got answers about my job search requirements that I'd been waiting months for

Has anyone tried going to a WorkSource office in person? Sometimes they can help with basic questions or at least tell you what documents Washington ESD is waiting for.
0 coins
Zoe Papadakis
•I didn't know WorkSource could help with Washington ESD claims - is that a thing?
0 coins
Liam O'Sullivan
•They have limited access to some claim info and can sometimes help with job search requirement questions. Worth a try if you have one nearby

AstroAdventurer
•WorkSource can help with job search logs and requirements but they can't access adjudication details or make changes to claims

The phone system was better before they switched to the new one last year. Now it's just constant busy signals and disconnects.

Fatima Al-Hashimi
•totally agree, the old system wasn't great but at least you could eventually get through
0 coins
Sofia Hernandez
•Exactly! Now it's like they don't want people to call at all

i finally got through after 3 weeks of trying and they told me my adjudication was waiting on employer response. wish they could have told me that sooner instead of just saying pending
0 coins
Zoe Papadakis
•That's probably what mine is waiting on too. How long did they say the employer has to respond?
0 coins
Dmitry Kuznetsov
•they said employers have 10 business days but can request extensions. so frustrating
0 coins
Amara Chukwu
•Employers typically get 10 days for initial response but Washington ESD can extend that if needed. The whole process can take 4-8 weeks depending on complexity

Pro tip: if you do get through, ask them to email you a summary of what they tell you. That way you have it in writing and don't have to call again for the same info.
0 coins
Zoe Papadakis
•Smart idea - assuming I ever get through to ask for that

Ava Thompson
•Yeah it's a big if, but when you do finally connect make the most of it

Been dealing with this for my standby claim and it's impossible. The phone system hangs up on you even when you finally get in the queue.
0 coins
Zoe Papadakis
•Standby claims have different rules right? That might be why it's taking longer
0 coins
Miguel Ramos
•Yeah standby is more complicated but I still need to talk to someone to explain my situation
0 coins
AstroAdventurer
•Standby claims require employer verification that you're temporarily laid off with a specific return date. The adjudication process is usually longer for these

Same boat here. My claim has been pending since mid-December and I can't get any information. Starting to think about contacting my state representative.

Zoe Papadakis
•Can state reps actually help with unemployment claims?

Zainab Ibrahim
•I've heard they sometimes can if you've exhausted other options. Might be worth a try

•Legislative offices can sometimes help escalate cases that have been stuck for unusually long periods, but they can't override Washington ESD determinations

tried everything including that claimyr thing someone mentioned and finally got through yesterday. turns out my employer never responded to the separation notice so they're making a determination based on my info only
0 coins
Zoe Papadakis
•That's actually good news for you right? If your employer didn't respond they can't contest your claim
0 coins
StarSailor
•yeah the agent said it should be resolved in my favor within a week since I have documentation of the layoff

The online messaging system through SecureAccess Washington is useless too. I sent a message 3 weeks ago and still no response.
0 coins
Zoe Papadakis
•I didn't even know there was a messaging system - where do you find that?
0 coins
Connor O'Brien
•In your account under 'contact us' but don't bother, they never respond
0 coins
AstroAdventurer
•The online messaging system has a backlog of several weeks right now. Phone contact is usually faster if you can get through
0 coins
Yara Sabbagh
Just want to say hang in there everyone. I know it's frustrating but once you get through they can usually resolve things pretty quickly. My adjudication took 5 weeks but got approved once they reviewed everything.
0 coins
Zoe Papadakis
•Thanks for the encouragement - I needed to hear that someone actually got their claim approved
0 coins
Yara Sabbagh
•Yeah it's stressful waiting but most claims do get approved eventually if you were legitimately laid off

has anyone tried calling the legislative hotline? i saw it mentioned on the washington esd website but not sure if it actually helps
0 coins
Zoe Papadakis
•I didn't know there was a legislative hotline - what's that number?
0 coins
Keisha Johnson
•i think it's for when you can't reach regular customer service but i'm not sure how it works
0 coins
Amara Chukwu
•The legislative hotline is for escalated issues when normal channels aren't working. They don't handle routine questions but can help if you've been unable to reach anyone for weeks

Update: I finally got through using Claimyr after seeing all the mentions here. Agent told me my claim should be approved by next week - employer confirmed the layoff was due to lack of work. Thanks to everyone who suggested it!
