How to get through to Washington ESD unemployment phone lines - tried everything
I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for over two weeks about my claim status and I'm losing my mind. I call right at 7:30am when they open, get put on hold for 2+ hours, then the system just hangs up on me. I've tried calling at different times, using different phone numbers I found online, even had my mom try calling from her phone thinking maybe they were blocking my number somehow. My weekly claim is stuck in some kind of review and I can't get any information about what's happening or how long this will take. Is there any trick to actually getting through to a real person at Washington ESD? I'm about to lose my apartment if I don't get some answers soon.

The phone system is absolutely brutal right now. I had the same problem last month - kept getting disconnected after waiting hours. The trick is to call exactly at 7:30am and keep hitting redial if you get a busy signal. Don't give up if you get the 'high call volume' message, just hang up and try again immediately.

•I've been doing exactly that but after 2 weeks I'm starting to wonder if there's something wrong with my specific case. Did you ever figure out what was causing your delay?

•Mine was stuck because they needed additional documentation for job separation. Once I got through they told me exactly what to upload to my account. The wait was terrible but the actual resolution was quick.

Have you tried the customer service callback option? Sometimes that works better than sitting on hold forever.

•I've requested callbacks three times and never heard back from anyone. Not sure if they're even working right now.

•The callback system has been broken for months. I requested one in October and I'm still waiting lol

I found a service called Claimyr that actually got me through to Washington ESD when I was stuck in adjudication hell. You give them your info and they keep calling until they reach an agent, then connect you. Saved me literally days of trying to call myself. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Honestly wish I'd found it sooner instead of wasting weeks calling manually.

•Wait, so they actually get through to real Washington ESD agents? How does that work exactly?

Kyle Wallace
•Yeah they use some kind of automated system to keep calling the Washington ESD numbers until they get through the phone queue, then they patch you directly to the agent. Check out claimyr.com for more details.

•This sounds too good to be true but at this point I'm willing to try anything. How much does it cost?

try calling the Tacoma office directly instead of the main number, sometimes their lines are less busy

Finley Garrett
•Do you have that number? I can't find any direct office numbers on the Washington ESD website.

•I think they consolidated all the phone lines during COVID. Pretty sure you can only reach the main customer service center now.

THE PHONE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! I've been trying for THREE MONTHS to get someone to explain why my benefits were cut off. Every time I finally get through they transfer me to someone else who can't help and I have to start over. This whole system is designed to make us give up.

Finley Garrett
•Three months?! That's insane. Have you tried filing an appeal or anything formal?
0 coins
Gianni Serpent
•Filed two appeals, sent multiple messages through the secure portal, even contacted my state representative. Nothing works. They just keep saying 'we're experiencing high call volume' like that's an excuse for not doing their jobs.

•Have you considered reaching out to the governor's office? Sometimes they can push these through when regular channels fail.

What time of day have you been calling? I've heard early morning and late afternoon work better than midday.

•I've tried literally every hour they're open. 7:30am seems to be the only time I even get into the queue but then I still get disconnected.

•That's so frustrating. The system really shouldn't be hanging up on people who've been waiting for hours.

Make sure you're calling the right number for your specific issue. There are different lines for new claims vs existing claims vs appeals. Using the wrong line can cause extra delays.

Finley Garrett
•I'm calling the general customer service line since my issue is about claim status. Is there a more specific number I should be using?
0 coins
Madison Tipne
•For claim status issues the general line should be correct. Sometimes they transfer you internally but that shouldn't affect getting through initially.

same thing happened to my brother last year, took him almost a month to get through but once he did they fixed everything in like 10 minutes

Finley Garrett
•A month?! I can't wait that long, I have rent due next week. This is so stressful.

Kyle Wallace
•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - the uncertainty and stress of not knowing when you'll get through is almost worse than the actual problem.

Have you checked your online account to see if there are any action items or documents they need from you? Sometimes claims get stuck because of missing paperwork.

Finley Garrett
•I check every day and there's nothing showing that I need to do. It just says 'under review' with no timeline or explanation.

•That's really frustrating when the system doesn't give you any information about what's happening with your claim.

I had good luck calling right after lunch around 1pm. Seems like fewer people call then because everyone tries first thing in the morning.

Finley Garrett
•I'll try that tomorrow. At this point I'm willing to call at any hour if it might work.

•Also try using your landline if you have one instead of cell phone. I've heard the system sometimes handles landline calls differently.

Malia Ponder
•that's probably just a myth but worth trying i guess

The whole situation is ridiculous. We shouldn't have to jump through hoops just to talk to someone about benefits we're entitled to.

Gianni Serpent
•EXACTLY! They make it impossible on purpose hoping we'll just give up and go away.

•I understand the frustration but I think it's more about being understaffed than intentionally making it difficult. The pandemic really overwhelmed their systems.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing since a few people asked - I used them last month when I was stuck in adjudication for 3 weeks. Cost wasn't too bad considering how much time it saved me, and I got connected to an agent within a few hours instead of spending days trying myself. They explained my adjudication issue and I had my payments released the next week.

Finley Garrett
•Ok I'm definitely going to check this out. Did you have to give them a lot of personal information?
0 coins
Kyle Wallace
•Just basic contact info and what type of issue I needed help with. They don't need your SSN or anything sensitive like that.

Ryder Ross
•This actually sounds legitimate. I might try it too if I can't get through this week.

persistence is key, just keep calling even when it seems hopeless

•I know you're right but it's hard to stay motivated when you've been trying for weeks with no progress.

•yeah i get it, the system sucks but giving up won't help your situation

Make sure you're documenting all your call attempts in case you need to file a complaint later. Keep track of dates, times, how long you waited, etc.

Finley Garrett
•Good idea, I haven't been keeping detailed records but I should start.

Holly Lascelles
•It might be useful if you end up needing to escalate to your state representatives or file a formal complaint.

Try calling from a different phone number if possible. Sometimes their system gets glitchy with specific numbers that have called too much.
0 coins
Finley Garrett
•That's interesting, I never thought about that. I'll ask a friend if I can use their phone tomorrow.

Madison Tipne
•I'm not sure that's actually how their system works but it can't hurt to try different approaches.

What exactly does your claim status say online? Sometimes the wording gives clues about what kind of review they're doing.
0 coins
Finley Garrett
•It just says 'Claim under review - no action required at this time' which tells me absolutely nothing useful.
0 coins
Ryder Ross
•That's frustratingly vague. At least if it said what kind of review it might give you an idea of the timeline.

File a complaint with your state representative immediately. Don't wait any longer. They have staff specifically for helping with state agency problems.

•How do I find the right person to contact? I've never had to do anything like that before.

•Go to the Washington State Legislature website and find your district representative. They usually have a form for constituent services issues.

Holly Lascelles
•This is good advice. Legislative offices can sometimes get responses from agencies when individual citizens can't.

Update on Claimyr for anyone considering it - I recommended it to my neighbor who was having the same problem and she got through yesterday. Took about 6 hours for them to connect her but she finally got to talk to someone and found out her claim was just waiting for wage verification from her previous employer.

Finley Garrett
•6 hours sounds amazing compared to the weeks I've been trying. I'm definitely going to sign up tonight.
0 coins
Henry Delgado
•That's a pretty reasonable timeframe considering how backed up the phone lines are normally.

Madison Tipne
OP, if you do get through eventually, make sure to ask specifically about timelines for your type of review. Sometimes they can give you at least a rough estimate of how much longer it might take.
0 coins
Finley Garrett
•That's a great point. Even knowing it might take another week or two would help me plan better than this complete uncertainty.
0 coins
Madison Tipne
•Exactly. The not knowing is often worse than a longer wait time when you at least have expectations.

honestly the whole unemployment system needs to be rebuilt from scratch, this stuff shouldn't be so complicated

•AGREED. It's like they designed it to be as frustrating as possible.

•The technology is definitely outdated. Other states seem to have much better online systems.

•Right now I just need to get through to someone, but you're all absolutely right about the bigger problems with the system.
