Can you get Washington ESD unemployment if you haven't worked 5 years?

I'm really confused about the work requirements for unemployment benefits. I haven't had steady employment for about 5 years due to some personal issues, but I did work part-time jobs here and there. Now I'm ready to get back into the workforce but wondering if I can even qualify for Washington ESD benefits with such a spotty work history? Does anyone know what the actual requirements are? I'm worried I won't qualify for anything.

The work requirement isn't about continuous employment over 5 years. Washington ESD looks at your base year earnings - basically the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. You need to have earned wages in at least 2 quarters and meet minimum earnings thresholds. Even part-time work counts if you paid into the UI system.

That's helpful! So it's more about recent earnings than having worked consistently for years?

0 coins

Exactly. They calculate your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter in that base year period.

i was in a similar situation and still qualified. you just need to show you were working and paying into unemployment insurance recently, not that you've been working non-stop for years

0 coins

That's reassuring. Did you have any trouble with the application process?

0 coins

nah it was pretty straightforward once i understood the base year thing

I had a gap in employment too and was worried about qualifying. The key is that Washington ESD looks at your earnings history in specific quarters, not whether you've been continuously employed. If you worked part-time jobs and had employers who paid unemployment taxes on your behalf, those wages should count toward your eligibility. You can check your wage history online through your SecureAccess Washington account.

I didn't know I could check my wage history online. That sounds really useful.

0 coins

Yes, it's under the unemployment services section. You can see exactly what wages Washington ESD has on file for you.

This is good advice. I checked mine and found some wages were missing from a temp job, had to contact the employer to fix it.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks to ask about my eligibility but their phone system is impossible. Every time I call I either get a busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. Has anyone found a better way to actually talk to someone there?

I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents - they handle the calling and waiting for you. Check out claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

That actually sounds really helpful. I'm so tired of wasting my whole day trying to get through.

0 coins

Wait, is that legit? Sounds too good to be true.

0 coins

Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of spending all day calling.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been trying to figure out my eligibility for months and can't get a straight answer from anyone. The website is confusing and the phone lines are useless. How are people supposed to navigate this nightmare?

0 coins

I understand the frustration, but the eligibility requirements are actually pretty straightforward once you understand them. Focus on your base year earnings first.

0 coins

Easy for you to say. I've read the requirements a dozen times and still don't understand if my part-time work counts.

0 coins

I feel you on this. The system is definitely not user-friendly.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses. It sounds like I might actually qualify even with my work gaps. Does anyone know what the minimum earnings requirement is for Washington ESD?

0 coins

For 2025, you need at least $5,265 in your highest earning quarter and total base year earnings of at least 1.5 times your high quarter amount. So if your highest quarter was $5,265, you'd need at least $7,897 total in your base year.

0 coins

That's really specific, thank you! I think I might actually meet those requirements.

0 coins

I was unemployed for 3 years and still qualified when I finally applied. The work history requirement isn't as strict as people think. They just want to see you were recently working and paying into the system.

0 coins

That's really encouraging. Did you have to provide any special documentation?

0 coins

Nope, just filled out the regular application. Washington ESD already had my wage records from employers.

0 coins

quick question - if you haven't worked in 5 years, how would you meet the job search requirements? don't you have to be able and available for work?

0 coins

Good point. You do need to be able and available for work and actively seeking employment. The job search requirement is 3 job contacts per week in Washington.

0 coins

I am ready to work now, that's why I'm looking into this. The personal issues that kept me out of work have been resolved.

My sister had a similar situation and Washington ESD told her she qualified based on part-time work from a few years ago. Don't assume you won't qualify until you actually check your wage records and apply.

0 coins

That's good to hear. I think I'm going to check my wage history online like someone suggested earlier.

0 coins

Yeah definitely check first before worrying about it

0 coins

I hate to be negative but if you haven't worked steadily in 5 years, you might have trouble proving you're actively seeking work. Washington ESD is pretty strict about that requirement now. They want to see you're really trying to find employment, not just collecting benefits.

0 coins

I understand that concern, but I really am ready to get back to work. I've been preparing for months.

0 coins

The able and available requirement is important, but if someone is genuinely seeking work and meets the wage requirements, they can qualify.

0 coins

For what it's worth, I've seen people qualify with much less recent work history than you might think. The key is having enough wages in your base year quarters. Don't let fear stop you from applying if you think you might qualify.

0 coins

Thank you for the encouragement. I'm feeling more confident about applying now.

One thing to keep in mind is that even if you don't qualify for regular unemployment, there might be other programs available depending on your situation. WorkSource offices can help you figure out what options you have.

0 coins

I hadn't thought about other programs. I'll look into WorkSource as well.

0 coins

WorkSource is actually really helpful. They have job search assistance and training programs too.

0 coins

I'm in a similar boat and have been hesitant to apply because I assumed I wouldn't qualify. This thread is making me think I should at least try. Worst case they say no, right?

0 coins

Exactly. There's no penalty for applying and being denied. Better to know for sure than to assume you don't qualify.

0 coins

That's my thinking too. I'm going to apply and see what happens.

0 coins

Just want to add that if you do qualify, make sure you understand all the requirements like filing weekly claims and doing your job search activities. Washington ESD is pretty strict about following all the rules once you're approved.

0 coins

Good point. I'll make sure I understand all the ongoing requirements if I get approved.

0 coins

Yeah the weekly claims are super important. Don't miss those deadlines.

0 coins

I actually got through to a Washington ESD representative last week using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. They were able to explain my eligibility over the phone which was way easier than trying to figure it out online. Worth considering if you want to talk to someone directly about your specific situation.

0 coins

That might be a good idea. I feel like I'd understand better if I could actually talk to someone.

0 coins

How long did it take to get connected through Claimyr?

0 coins

About 15 minutes. Way better than the hours I spent trying to call directly.

0 coins

Thanks for starting this thread! I learned a lot from reading everyone's responses. I'm in a similar situation and now feel more confident about applying.

0 coins

You're welcome! I'm glad it helped others too. Good luck with your application!

0 coins

Final tip - if you do apply and get approved, set up direct deposit right away. Paper checks take forever to arrive and can get lost in the mail.

0 coins

Thanks for the practical advice! I'll definitely do that if I get approved.

0 coins

Yes this is so important. I waited weeks for my first paper check before switching to direct deposit.
