Can you apply for unemployment if you are fired - Washington ESD eligibility question
Got terminated from my job last week and I'm not sure if I can even apply for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. My manager said it was due to performance issues but I feel like they were looking for reasons to let me go. Does being fired automatically disqualify you from getting UI benefits? I've been working for 18 months straight before this happened. Really stressed about this whole situation and could use some guidance on whether it's even worth applying.

You can definitely apply even if you were fired! Washington ESD looks at the reason for termination. If it wasn't for misconduct (like stealing, fighting, etc.), you should be eligible. Performance issues usually don't disqualify you from UI benefits unless it was willful misconduct. File your claim online at esd.wa.gov and let them make the determination.

APPLY ANYWAY! I got fired for being late too many times and still got approved. Washington ESD will investigate and make the call. Your former employer has to provide documentation if they want to contest it. Most employers don't even bother fighting it unless it was really serious misconduct.

Whatever you do, don't quit your next job if you get one right away. I got fired, found a new job within a week, but it was horrible so I quit after 3 days. Now Washington ESD is saying I'm not eligible because I voluntarily left my most recent job. It's a mess.

Just want to add - make sure you have all your employment info ready when you apply. Washington ESD needs dates, employer addresses, reason for separation, etc. If you were fired, be honest about it but don't make it sound worse than it was.
