Finally got through to SSA to update info - Any tips for others struggling to reach them?
Hey everyone, I just wanted to share that I finally got through to the SSA to update my information. It's been a real hassle trying to get in touch with them, but I finally managed to do it. Has anyone else had trouble reaching them lately? Any tips for others who might be struggling to get through?

Congrats on finally getting through! I've been trying for weeks to update my address with them. How long did it take you to get someone on the line?

•Thanks! It took me about 3 hours of being on hold before I finally got through to a real person. I started calling right when they opened in the morning, which seemed to help.

•3 hours?! That's insane. The system is so broken 😤

•Wow, 3 hours is rough. But I guess thats better than not getting through at all. I'll try calling first thing tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed! 🤞

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. (https://www.claimyr.com

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Has anyone else tried it?

•Yeah, it's totally legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

Pro tip: Try calling your local SSA office instead of the main number. I had much better luck getting through that way!

•This is great advice! I didn't even think about calling the local office. Do you just google for the number or is there a directory somewhere?

•You can find your local office on the SSA website. Just go to their office locator and enter your zip code. It'll give you the address and phone number.

I've had success using their online portal to update some of my information. Has anyone else tried this? It's not perfect, but it beats waiting on hold for hours.

•I tried the online portal but it wouldn't let me change my address for some reason. Kept getting an error message 😫

•Oh no, that sucks! Yeah, I've heard it can be hit or miss. Might be worth trying again in a few days? Sometimes their system glitches.

Here's a comprehensive guide to updating your information with the SSA: 1. Online: Use the my Social Security account portal. It's available 24/7 and can handle most common updates. 2. Phone: Call 1-800-772-1213 between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Best times to call are Wednesday to Friday, and later in the day. 3. In-person: Visit your local SSA office. Make an appointment in advance if possible. 4. Mail: Send a signed letter with your Social Security number and the information you want to update. 5. Fax: Similar to mail, but faster. Remember to have all necessary documents ready, like proof of identity and address. If you're changing your name, you'll need legal documents showing the name change. Hope this helps everyone navigate the process a bit easier!

•Great info! One question - do you know if theres a way to check the status of an update request?

•Good question! Unfortunately, there's no straightforward way to check the status online. Your best bet is to call and ask, or check your my Social Security account to see if the changes are reflected there.

Anyone else feel like the government needs to seriously upgrade their systems? It's 2023 for crying out loud, why is it still so hard to update basic info? 🤦♂️

•To be fair, they're dealing with sensitive info for millions of people. But yeah, they could definitely streamline things a bit more.

LPT: If you're having trouble getting through on the phone, try calling right at 7:59 am their time. Sometimes you can get in the queue before the rush.

I'm so frustrated with the SSA right now. I've been trying to correct a mistake on my earnings record for months and keep getting the runaround. Anyone dealt with this before?

•Oof, that's rough. I had a similar issue last year. Took forever, but I finally got it sorted. Hang in there!

•Thanks for the encouragement. How long did it take you to get it resolved?

•It took about 3 months all told. Make sure you keep copies of EVERYTHING and follow up regularly. Squeaky wheel gets the grease and all that.

This is such a timely thread! I've been putting off updating my address with SSA for months because I've heard horror stories about the wait times. Reading through everyone's experiences here is really helpful - especially the tips about calling early morning and trying local offices. Has anyone tried the mail option? I'm wondering if that might be less stressful than dealing with phone calls, even if it takes longer to process.
