TWC claim still pending after 15 days - concern about 'at will' termination approval

I'm getting really nervous about my unemployment claim. It's been 15 days since I filed and my status is still showing as 'pending approval'. I was let go from my job under Texas 'at will' employment (no specific reason given besides company restructuring). Will this cause problems with my claim being approved? I've been checking my TWC account daily but nothing changes. Is this normal waiting time in 2025 or should I be concerned? My former HR just said I was 'separated due to at will employment' on my separation paperwork. Really need this to go through as I've got bills piling up.

The good news is that being let go 'at will' usually doesn't disqualify you from unemployment benefits in Texas. As long as you weren't fired for misconduct, you should be eligible. 15 days is within normal processing times, especially during busy periods. TWC is currently taking anywhere from 14-21 days for initial claim approval if there are no issues that need additional investigation. Your former employer has 14 days to respond to your claim, so TWC might be waiting for that response before making a determination. If they haven't disputed your claim, you should be approved soon.

Thank you! That's reassuring. Do you think I should try calling them to check on the status or just continue waiting a bit longer? I'm worried my bills will be late if this takes much longer.

I waited 19 days last month for mine to get approved and I was also 'at will' let go. Just hang tight! They're sooooo slow right now.

That helps to know it's not just me! Did you have to call them at all or did it just suddenly change to approved?

ur fine, at will means they didnt fire u for a reason that would mess up ur benefits. just means they let u go cuz they wanted to. the wait time is normal, TWC is crazy backed up this time of year. mine took like 3 weeks in january

I was in exactly your situation in February. 'At will' termination is actually good for your unemployment claim because it means you weren't fired for misconduct. The 15-day wait is normal, but if you're anxious, you can try calling TWC directly to check on your claim status. Just keep making your payment requests on your assigned days even while your claim is pending. Once approved, you'll get paid retroactively for all eligible weeks. Also, don't forget to complete and log your work search activities (minimum 3 per week) starting from when you first filed. You'll need these records even for the weeks when your claim was still pending.

Thanks for this detailed advice! I've been doing my work searches and logging them. I've tried calling TWC several times but always get a busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold.

My brother-in-law works for a company that had layoffs and he was let go "at will" too. His claim took 17 days to approve but then everything was fine. At will just means they can fire you without cause, not that you did anything wrong. As long as the employer doesn't contest it you should be fine!

I'm actually dealing with an 'at will' termination too, but I've been waiting 23 DAYS and still nothing!! This is completely ridiculous. The TWC website is useless - just says 'pending' with no explanation. I've called literally 47 times and can't get through to an actual human. This system is BROKEN!!! How are we supposed to pay bills when they take forever to process claims? The employers get to just fire us whenever they want with no warning, but then we have to jump through hoops to get the benefits we're entitled to! BEYOND FRUSTRATED!!

I had the same frustration trying to call TWC last month. After wasting days with busy signals, I finally used a service called Claimyr that got me through to a TWC agent in about 15 minutes. It basically keeps dialing for you until it gets through. Saved me so much stress! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh Once I finally got through to TWC, the agent told me my claim was just sitting in a queue waiting for review and she was able to expedite it. Approved two days later.

Update: Just wanted to let everyone know my claim was FINALLY approved this morning! Took exactly 18 days from when I filed. The status just changed on my account and I got an email notification. They didn't call me or anything - it just updated. For anyone else waiting, hang in there. And thanks everyone for the reassurance about the 'at will' termination - you were right that it wasn't an issue.

Great news! Make sure you continue submitting your payment requests on your assigned day and completing your work search activities. The first payment usually hits your account about 2-3 business days after approval if you're using direct deposit.
