TWC benefit check still not in mail 2+ weeks after approval - normal wait time?

I got approved for Texas unemployment on December 23rd (yay finally!) but here we are mid-January and I still haven't received a single check in the mail. My payment status shows 'processed' online, but nothing has shown up in my mailbox. Is this normal? Do TWC checks usually take this long, especially with the holidays? Getting nervous since rent is coming up and my savings are basically gone. Anyone know how long I should expect to wait before I need to contact TWC? The thought of sitting on hold for hours is making me anxious.

It shouldn't take more than 7-10 days max, even with holidays. Something's definitely off. Have you checked your correspondence inbox on the TWC portal? They might have sent you something about direct deposit enrollment or issues with your mailing address. Also make sure your address is correct in the system - I had a friend who didn't get checks for a month because they had his old apartment number.

Just checked and there's nothing in my correspondence inbox except the original determination letter. My address is definitely correct because I triple-checked when I applied. Do you think someone stole it from my mailbox? Should I request they stop payment and reissue?

The holiday delay shouldn't be more than a few extra days. Two things to check: 1. Make sure you completed your payment request (this is different from just being approved) 2. Double-check that you didn't sign up for direct deposit by accident If both of those check out, you need to contact TWC because it's been too long. Their system may have the wrong address or the check could have been lost in the mail.

Thank you! I definitely did my payment request (did it on Dec 26th) and I specifically chose paper check because my bank account is overdrawn right now. Sounds like I need to contact them, but their phone lines are always busy. Any tips for actually getting through?

I got stuck in the same situation last month! TWC is super backed up right now, but mail service is even worse. I was going crazy waiting for my check that showed 'processed' for almost 3 weeks. I tried calling TWC 20+ times but kept getting the dreaded busy signal. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 35 minutes. They confirmed my check had been mailed but was probably delayed. They offered to cancel it and set me up with direct deposit instead, which I definitely recommend. You can see how it works in their demo: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh My check actually showed up the next day (of course!), but I still switched to direct deposit for future payments.

Omg thank you for this! I'll check out Claimyr - at this point I'd pay anything to not sit on hold for hours. Direct deposit would be better long-term but I really need this first check to clear my bank overdraft before I can use direct deposit for future payments.

Mine took 18 days after the holidays last year so its probly normal. TWC is ALWAYS behind on everything lol. But if ur worried u should def call them. Have you checked ur mail status on informed delivery from USPS? You can see whats coming b4 it arrives.

I didn't even think about Informed Delivery! Just signed up for it - hopefully that'll at least let me know when it's actually coming. Thanks for the suggestion.

This happens frequently with paper checks, especially around holidays. The most common reasons for delay are: 1. USPS backlog from holiday season 2. Address verification issues in the TWC system 3. Payment processing delays at TWC (very common in January) Paper checks can take up to 21 business days to arrive during peak periods. Since your approval was December 23rd, and we had Christmas and New Year holidays, you're still within the expected window. However, I'd recommend calling TWC if it doesn't arrive by the end of this week. For future payments, direct deposit is significantly faster (2-3 business days typically).

That's a relief to hear it could be up to 21 business days. I'll wait until the end of the week before calling TWC. Definitely switching to direct deposit for future payments - this is too stressful!

wait I thot TWC was doing away with paper checks?? my neighbor said they told him everybody HAS to do direct deposit now. maybe thats y ur checks not coming??

That information is incorrect. TWC strongly encourages direct deposit but still offers paper checks as an option for those who need them. They did implement a direct deposit requirement during the pandemic, but that policy was reversed in late 2023. Paper checks remain available for all eligible claimants.

UPDATE: My check finally arrived today! It was postmarked January 2nd, so it's been sitting in USPS limbo for over 2 weeks. Thanks everyone for your help - I'm definitely setting up direct deposit for my next payment request so I don't have to stress about this again.

Glad it finally showed up! Definitely go with direct deposit - it's so much faster. And remember to keep doing your work search activities while you wait for payments!

Perfect timing! Really happy it worked out for you. Direct deposit is definitely the way to go - I've never had an issue with timing since switching.
