TWC new claim showing as expired previous claim - employer hasn't responded for 2+ weeks

I got laid off on July 1st and immediately filed for unemployment that same day. It's been over two weeks now, and when I log into my TWC account, I'm only seeing my previous claim from last year that's already expired. When I called the Tele-Serv system, the automated message said my claim is pending because my employer hasn't responded yet. Should I keep waiting? Is this normal? Do I need to contact TWC directly or follow up with my former employer? This is really stressing me out because I have bills due next week and I haven't received any payments yet. I'm worried my application is stuck somewhere in the system.

This is actually quite normal, though frustrating. When you file a new claim after having a previous one, the system sometimes only displays the old claim until the new one is fully processed. The employer has 14 days to respond to TWC about your separation, so you're right at that deadline now. If you haven't received any correspondence by mail or in your TWC correspondence inbox about the new claim by the end of this week, then you should definitely try to speak with a representative.

Thank you! That makes me feel a little better. Should I still be requesting payment even though I can only see my expired claim? I'm worried about doing something wrong and delaying things even more.

The EXACT same thing happened to me in January. The TWC system is sooo broken! My previous employer took almost THREE WEEKS to respond and meanwhile I couldn't see my new claim AT ALL just the old expired one. I called like 50 times and could never get through. When I finally did my back payments came all at once but I had to borrow money from family to pay rent. The whole system is designed to make us suffer I swear!!!

Three weeks?! That's insane. Did you have to do anything special to finally get it resolved or did it just suddenly start working?

Yes, you should absolutely continue requesting payments on your scheduled request date, even if you can only see the expired claim. The system will connect those payment requests to your new claim once it's processed. If you miss payment requests now, you'll have to request backdating later, which is another headache. Also, make sure you're completing and documenting your work search activities (at least 3 per week) during this waiting period.

Thank you! I wasn't sure if I should be requesting payment since I can't see the new claim. I've been keeping track of my job applications, so that's covered at least.

I had this same issue back in April! I eventually got through to TWC using Claimyr (claimyr.com) and found out my previous employer was disputing my claim saying I quit when I was actually laid off. The TWC rep was able to escalate my case once I explained my situation. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh. It was the only way I could get through after trying for days on my own.

I might try that if I don't see any updates by the end of the week. Did you have to provide any additional documentation when you spoke with the TWC rep?

Is this your first payment request since filing the new claim? Sometimes the system updates after you complete your first payment request. Also check your correspondence inbox, not just the dashboard. Sometimes approval letters go there before the main dashboard updates.

Yes, it would be my first payment request. I've been checking my correspondence inbox daily and there's nothing new there either. Just old messages from my previous claim.

To answer your follow-up question: Yes, you might need some documentation ready if your employer is contesting the layoff. Have your last date of employment, the name of who laid you off, and any paperwork they provided (termination notice, severance documents, etc.). Also, be ready to explain the circumstances of the separation clearly. The TWC representative will need to enter notes about your situation if they need to expedite your claim.

That's helpful, thank you! I do have an email from my manager confirming the layoff date and reason, so I'll keep that handy.

EVERYONE LISTEN! The trick is to call at EXACTLY 7:00am when they open. Not 7:01, not 7:05. RIGHT at 7:00am. That's how I finally got through after waiting 3 weeks for my employer who was ignoring TWC. The rep told me they can process the claim even if employer doesn't respond, but u have to talk to someone!!

That doesn't always work either. I tried calling at exactly 7:00am for a week straight and still got the busy signal. The call volume is just insane since they reduced staff.

One more thing to check - make sure you've completed the ID.me verification if you were prompted to do so. Sometimes claims get stuck in pending status if the identity verification isn't complete, and the system often doesn't make it clear that this is the issue. You would have received an email or correspondence about completing this step if it's required for your claim.

I did complete the ID.me verification right after filing. It was a bit confusing with all the selfie verification steps, but it showed as completed afterward.

Has anyone else noticed that the TWC website is ALWAYS down for maintenance at the most inconvenient times?? I swear they do it on purpose when payment request days come around! I had to request payment at 2AM last time because that was the only time I could actually log in without getting an error!

@OP based on your situation, I'd give it until exactly the 14-day mark from when you filed (so that would be July 15th), and if you still don't see updates or can't get through on the phone, then definitely try alternative methods to reach TWC. When I finally got through to someone, they told me that sometimes claims get stuck in a review queue if there's anything unusual about your work history or if your previous claim was relatively recent. They can usually fix it in minutes once you actually speak with someone.

Thank you! I'll give it until July 15th then. My previous claim was from about 14 months ago, so maybe that's part of the confusion in the system.
