TWC DUA showing benefit amount but boyfriend's shows $0 - am I approved?

I just called the TWC Tele-Serv number and pressed option 2 to check my Disaster Unemployment Assistance claim status. It read me a weekly benefit amount of $475, but didn't actually say if I'm approved or not. Does hearing a dollar amount mean my claim is approved? I'm confused because my boyfriend also applied for DUA after we both lost work from the flood damage, but when he checks his, it still says $0. We both applied on the same day (last Thursday). Has anyone else dealt with DUA claims? I'm worried about getting my hopes up if this doesn't actually mean approval. Should I keep calling or is there a better way to confirm?

In my experience, if you're getting a benefit amount when you check ur status, that usually means ur APPROVED. The $0 for your bf probably means his claim is still pending review. DUA takes longer to process than regular unemployment bcuz they have to verify the disaster impact.

Thanks, that's reassuring! Do you know how long before I might actually see a payment? We're staying with family right now since our apartment got flooded.

Hearing a benefit amount is a positive sign, but it doesn't necessarily mean final approval. For DUA claims specifically, TWC requires additional documentation proving you were directly impacted by the disaster. The system initially calculates a potential benefit amount based on your reported wages, but full approval requires document verification. Keep checking your correspondence inbox on the portal for any requests for additional documentation.

Oh no, that's stressful. I uploaded photos of our damaged apartment with the application. Do I need to send more proof? I haven't gotten any messages yet.

The photos were a good start. You should also provide any documentation that shows you were employed before the disaster (pay stubs, employment verification letter) and proof that your workplace was in the declared disaster area. If you haven't received specific requests yet, you might be in good shape, but keep monitoring your TWC correspondence inbox daily.

same thing happen to me last year with hurricane DUA claim... got a benefit amount right away but husband didnt. took like 3 more weeks for him to get approved. think it just depends who processes your claim and how backed up the system is

I had this EXACT problem with a DUA claim last year. Calling TWC is IMPOSSIBLE - busy signals for DAYS!! I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it got me through to a TWC agent in about 20 minutes. They explained that seeing a benefit amount meant my claim was provisionally approved but still needed final verification. The agent was able to tell me exactly what docs I needed to submit. Saved me weeks of waiting! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh

Thank you for this! I've been trying to call for 2 days with no luck. I'll check out that service because I really need to know what's going on with my claim.

DUA and regular unemployment work differently. With DUA, the system calculates a potential benefit amount based on the information you provided, but final approval requires verification of your disaster-related job loss. Having a benefit amount displayed is promising, but you should also receive a determination letter (check your correspondence inbox) that explicitly states you're approved. Your boyfriend might be missing information or documentation that's causing his $0 amount, or his application might be in a different processing queue.

my cousin had DUA claim and it took 6 weeks to get paid because they kept asking for more proof so dont count on getting paid fast even if approved just saying

The TWC system is SO FRUSTRATING!!! I had a DUA claim after the 2023 wildfires and they showed me a benefit amount for THREE WEEKS before sending me a denial letter claiming I didn't provide enough proof. Then I had to appeal and wait ANOTHER month! The whole time my account showed a benefit amount! Don't trust what you see online - get EVERYTHING in writing and keep calling until you talk to an actual human!!!

That's terrifying! Did you eventually get approved after your appeal? What kind of proof did they want?

Yes, I finally got approved but only after submitting: 1) letter from my employer confirming job loss due to disaster 2) copy of rental agreement showing I lived in disaster area 3) FEMA registration number and 4) proof of income from before the disaster. Save EVERYTHING and make copies of all documents you submit!!

btw make sure ur both doing the work search requirements even while waiting! u still gotta do 3 work searches every week and request payment on ur assigned day or theyll deny u even if u were approved before

Wait, I thought with DUA we don't have to do work searches if our employer said they'll hire us back once they rebuild? That's what my boss told me...

Your boss is partially correct. If you have a definite return-to-work date within 12 weeks of the disaster declaration, you can be placed on DUA standby status, which waives work search requirements. However, you must specifically request this status from TWC, and your employer needs to verify the return date. If you haven't requested standby status, you should complete work searches until confirmed.

That's what I'm afraid of. I keep getting different answers from everyone. I guess I just need to keep trying to get through to TWC directly.

Here's what the different status indicators mean for DUA claims: 1. Benefit amount showing + determination letter = Approved 2. Benefit amount showing but no determination letter = Provisionally calculated but pending final approval 3. $0 benefit amount = Either pending initial review OR missing required documentation Make sure both you and your boyfriend check your correspondence inbox daily and respond to any requests for information immediately. DUA has stricter documentation requirements than regular unemployment.

Thank you for breaking this down! I checked my correspondence inbox and there's nothing there yet except the initial application confirmation. I'll keep checking daily.
