DUA approval taking forever - need it for back-to-school supplies!

Just got off the phone with a TWC rep about my Disaster Unemployment Assistance claim and I'm totally freaking out. She literally told me she has NO IDEA how long approval takes and it 'could be a long wait.' ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? My son starts school in 3 weeks and I was counting on this money to buy his supplies and clothes. We lost everything in the flood last month and I haven't been able to work since my workplace was damaged. How am I supposed to send him to school with nothing?? Has anyone here actually received DUA benefits recently? How long did your approval process take? This whole system is a joke!

same boat here...applied 4 dua after the tornado hit our town. been waiting 5+ weeks now with zero updates. my kids start school next monday and i got nothing for them either. u try calling the disaster assistance hotline? they never pick up for me

5 WEEKS?? Oh god, I can't wait that long! I've called the hotline twice but just got put in a queue and eventually hung up after an hour both times. Did they at least tell you what's causing the delay?

DUA claims do take longer than regular UI because they require additional verification of your disaster-related job loss. Most DUA claims are being processed in 3-4 weeks right now, but it can sometimes take up to 6 weeks depending on your specific situation. Make sure you've uploaded all required documentation (proof of employment, proof of disaster impact, etc.) and continue requesting payment every two weeks even while waiting for approval. Once approved, you'll receive all backdated payments you qualify for.

Thank you for the info! I uploaded everything they asked for when I first applied - pay stubs, photos of the damage, letter from my employer about the closure. I've been submitting payment requests but it still shows 'pending' every time. Should I try calling again or just wait?

Unfortunately, DUA applications are handled differently than regular unemployment and often take longer to process. In my experience, there are a few things you can do to help your situation: 1. Make sure you've marked your claim as "disaster-related" and selected the specific disaster event that affected you 2. Call your local Workforce Solutions office (not just the main TWC line) as they sometimes can help with expediting disaster claims 3. Request an emergency hardship review by explaining your school supply situation 4. Keep detailed notes of all calls including representative names For your son's school supplies, check if your school district has any emergency assistance programs - many have backpack giveaways specifically for families affected by disasters.

Thank you so much for these suggestions! I definitely selected the disaster event when applying (the May flooding). I'll try calling my local Workforce office tomorrow morning. Do you think mentioning school starting soon would qualify as a hardship for expediting?

when I applied 4 dua last year it took almost 8 weeks to get approved!! but they did pay all the back weeks once it went thru. check with ur kids school they might have free supplies for kids in ur situation. most schools have programs for families going thru hard times.

8 weeks is insane! But at least you got all back pay. I've heard some people mentioning they didn't get back pay with DUA. Does TWC always pay all weeks or is that case-by-case?

I went through this whole DUA nightmare after Hurricane Harvey hit our town and destroyed my workplace. The system is broken and they KNOW IT!! I waited almost 7 weeks for approval while my rent went unpaid and my kid needed everything for school. No one at TWC cares about our actual lives or emergencies. They just hide behind their "processing time" excuses while we suffer. The worst part is you can never reach an actual person to help speed things up!!!! CALL YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVE - that's the ONLY way I finally got movement on my claim.

7 weeks! That's terrifying. I'm already behind on bills from being out of work. I never thought about calling my state rep - that's actually a really good idea. Did they help you get approved faster?

Hey there, sorry you're dealing with this stress right now. Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to a TWC agent? After struggling for weeks trying to reach someone about my disaster claim, I used their service and got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. They basically wait on hold for you and call when an agent is available. I was skeptical but it worked really well. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh Once I got through to an actual person, they were able to tell me exactly what was holding up my DUA claim and what I needed to do to move it forward.

I've never heard of this service before! After wasting hours on hold this week I'm willing to try anything. Just watched the video and it seems pretty straightforward. I'll definitely give this a shot tomorrow - I really need to talk to someone who can actually see what's happening with my claim and maybe expedite it. Thank you!

That's a good tip! I've been checking my inbox obsessively but haven't received any requests yet. The disaster date was definitely correct since I applied right after the flooding in May. I'll keep checking though!

Quick update for everyone discussing DUA timelines - TWC is currently prioritizing DUA claims for households with school-aged children due to back-to-school season. Be sure to mention this specifically when you speak with a representative. Also, while waiting for approval, contact your local school district about their emergency assistance programs. Many Texas districts offer "disaster relief" supply packages that include backpacks, basic clothing, and essential school supplies for families affected by recent disasters. You can typically apply through your school's counselor or administration office.

This is incredibly helpful information! I had no idea they were prioritizing families with school children. I'll definitely mention this when I call tomorrow. I'll also contact my son's school counselor first thing in the morning to ask about emergency assistance. Thank you so much!
