TWC Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) application status - waiting since July with no updates
I submitted my Disaster Unemployment Assistance application on July 11th after my workplace was damaged in the storm. It's been over 3 weeks and I haven't heard ANYTHING back from TWC. My payment request date is coming up next week according to my account, but my claim still shows 'pending' with no determination letter or approval. Should I go ahead and request payment even though I haven't been approved yet? Anyone else waiting on DUA approval or gotten any updates? I'm starting to worry they lost my application or something went wrong.

Yes, absolutely request payment on your scheduled date even if you haven't received an approval yet! This is really important - if you miss your payment request, you could lose benefits for that period. DUA claims often take longer to process than regular unemployment because they require additional verification of disaster impact. My neighbor applied for DUA around the same time as you and just got approved yesterday.

•That's a relief to hear someone else finally got approved! Did your neighbor get any communication before the approval showed up? I haven't received any emails or letters at all.

•Have you tried calling them? I've been trying every morning but can't get through.

•Tried calling like 20 times. Always busy signal or it hangs up automatically.

Ugh the TWC system is COMPLETELY BROKEN for disaster claims!!! I waited 5 WEEKS for my DUA approval after the last hurricane and then they had the nerve to ask for more documentation. Meanwhile bills piling up and no income. The whole disaster program is just for show - they make it impossible to actually get help when you need it!!

Here's what you need to know about DUA claims: 1. Always submit payment requests on schedule, even while pending. The system will hold these until your claim is approved, then release payments retroactively. 2. DUA claims require more documentation than regular UI. Make sure you've submitted proof of employment at the time of the disaster and documentation of how the disaster impacted your work. 3. The average processing time for DUA is currently 3-5 weeks due to the high volume of claims from the recent disaster. 4. If you haven't uploaded documentation showing how the disaster directly caused your unemployment, log into your account and do that immediately using the Document Upload tool. Keep requesting payments every two weeks as scheduled. Once approved, you'll receive all eligible back payments in a lump sum.

•Thank you for this detailed info! I did upload my documentation showing the storm damage to our workplace, but maybe I should add more. Is there a way to check if they received what I already sent?

•You can check the "Correspondence & Document History" section of your TWC account online. It should show what documents you've submitted and when. If you're concerned, it doesn't hurt to upload additional documentation clearly labeled. Just make sure any new documentation clearly shows the connection between the disaster and your unemployment.

I think DUA and regular unemployment are totally different systems. I applied for regular UI last year when I got laid off and it only took like 10 days to get approved. My cousin applied for DUA after her shop flooded and it took like 6 weeks! Make sure you're doing the work search requirements too while you wait.

•This is incorrect information. DUA claims specifically do NOT have the same work search requirements as regular unemployment. For DUA, you only need to be available for work and accept suitable work if offered, but you don't have to complete the 3 weekly work search activities that regular UI requires. Please be careful about giving incorrect information as it could cause people to spend time on unnecessary requirements.

I was in the exact same situation last month after my business was damaged in the storm. I couldn't get through to anyone at TWC for weeks - constant busy signals or getting disconnected. I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual TWC agent in about 20 minutes. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was happening with my DUA claim and what additional documentation I needed to provide. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh. Definitely worth it when you're stuck in limbo with no information.

•That sounds really helpful! I'm going to check it out. At this point I just need to talk to someone who can tell me what's going on with my application.

•I'm skeptical of ANY service claiming to help with TWC. Has anyone else actually tried this and gotten through?

One more important thing to know about DUA: These benefits have different eligibility criteria than regular unemployment. You qualify if: 1. You've lost work directly due to the disaster 2. You worked in the disaster area 3. You can't work because of disaster-related injury 4. You've become the head of household due to a disaster-related death 5. You can't reach your workplace because of the disaster Make sure your documentation clearly shows which of these apply to you. This will help speed up your determination. Also, remember DUA is typically available for up to 26 weeks from the date of the disaster declaration, not from when you apply.

•This is really helpful! I definitely fall under #1 and #2 since our building had significant damage. I'll make sure that's super clear in any additional documentation I send.

Anyone know if we can apply for regular UI and DUA at the same time? Getting desperate here...

•No, you cannot receive both types of benefits simultaneously. If you qualify for regular UI, you'll be required to claim those benefits instead of DUA. DUA is specifically for people who don't qualify for regular unemployment but were affected by a declared disaster. If you apply for both, you'll likely cause delays and confusion in your claim processing as the system will flag the duplicate applications.
