DUA response time from TWC? Waiting for disaster benefits decision
I applied for Disaster Unemployment Assistance 12 days ago after my workplace closed from the flood damage in Houston. Haven't heard ANYTHING back from TWC. My regular unemployment application was denied since I'd only been at that job for 2 months (not enough base period wages), so DUA is my only option. My savings are almost gone and I'm getting really anxious. Does anyone know the typical timeline for DUA decisions? Do they notify you differently than regular UI? The TWC website just says my application is "pending review" but gives no timeline estimate.

•6 WEEKS?? Are you serious? I can't wait that long. Did they at least backpay you from the date you applied?

It typically takes 21-30 days for TWC to process DUA applications. They have to verify you're not eligible for regular UI benefits first (which they already did in your case), then confirm your employment was directly affected by the declared disaster. Did you upload documentation showing your employment or self-employment at the time of the disaster? Missing documentation is usually what causes delays.

•This is accurate. Also make sure to keep requesting payment every two weeks even while waiting for a decision! If approved, they'll backdate to when the disaster affected your employment, not just when you applied.

•Yes, I uploaded my last two paystubs, a letter from my employer about the closure, and photos of the flood damage. Should I be calling them to check status or just keep waiting?

When my house flooded in 2019 I applied for DUA and it took them 3 weeks to make a determination but then another week to get the payment. My brother applied at the same time and got denied because he couldn't prove he was working right before the disaster! Make sure u have LOTS of documentation. Did TWC send you any messages in your correspondence inbox on the portal? Sometimes they need more info but don't call or email you about it.

•Just checked my correspondence inbox and there's nothing there except the original confirmation that I applied. I'll keep checking though. Did they send you anything in the mail or was it all through the portal?

•They sent everything through the portal for me, but my neighbor said she got a letter in the mail. I think it depends on what preferences you set up when you registered your account.

DUA processing is taking about 3-4 weeks right now due to the volume of applications from the flooding. Here's what you should do while waiting: 1. Request payment every two weeks as if you were already approved 2. Check your correspondence inbox daily 3. Make sure your contact info is up to date in the system 4. Document your work search activities (yes, you need to do this even for DUA) 5. Call TWC if it goes beyond 30 days IF you need to call them, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) instead of waiting on hold forever. I was in the same situation last month and used them to get through to a TWC agent in about 20 minutes instead of calling for days. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh

•Thank you for the detailed information! I didn't realize I needed to request payments before being approved. I'll start doing that right away. And thanks for the Claimyr tip - I'll give them 30 days before I try calling, but good to know there's a way to get through if I need to.

•That's terrifying to hear. What additional documentation did you have to provide for the appeal?

•had to get a NOTARIZED letter from my boss plus tax returns from the prev yr. such a headache!!! make sure EVERY SINGLE DOCUMENT you submit has your name, last 4 of SSN, and date on it or they'll reject it for being "incomplete" - they pulled that on me TWICE!!

My cousin is going through this right now too. DUA is taking about a month from what he's been told. The disaster funds are separate from regular unemployment money which is why it takes longer. He said make sure you answer your phone even if it's unknown numbers because they sometimes call to verify information.

•That's good to know about answering unknown calls. I've been letting those go to voicemail because of all the spam calls lately. I'll start picking up.

•No, I didn't realize there was a separate hotline. Do you have that number?

•The TWC Disaster Unemployment Assistance hotline is 800-939-6631. They're open Monday-Friday 8am-6pm. However, this line is also extremely backlogged right now due to the flooding event.

I received DUA after the 2021 freeze in Texas. Some advice from my experience: 1. Keep detailed records of all communications 2. Don't miss any payment request deadlines 3. Continue your work search activities (3 per week for Texas) 4. Check both your email and TWC correspondence inbox regularly Mine took 27 days for approval, which seems to be about average. And yes, they do backdate payments to when you became unemployed due to the disaster, not when you applied or were approved.

•Thank you, this is really helpful! I'll start my work search activities today. I was confused about whether I needed to do those for DUA, so I'm glad you mentioned it.
