Can I get DUA benefits after regular TWC benefits exhausted due to Hurricane Beryl displacement?

I lost my job when Hurricane Beryl hit and have been on regular unemployment since then. My benefits just ran out last week, but I still don't have my job back because the business is still closed from storm damage. I heard something about Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) for people affected by the hurricane. Can I apply for DUA now that my regular benefits are exhausted? I'm still displaced from my home and can't return to my original workplace since they're still rebuilding. Anyone know if I qualify or how to switch from regular UI to DUA? My bills are piling up and I'm getting desperate.

DUA and regular unemployment are separate programs, and there are specific eligibility rules. If you already qualified for regular UI, you typically wouldn't be eligible for DUA as it's meant for people who DON'T qualify for regular benefits. However, since your situation changed because of continued displacement, you might have a case. Have you checked with TWC directly about your options now that your benefits are exhausted?

Thanks for responding. I've been trying to call TWC for 3 days straight but keep getting busy signals or disconnected. I thought maybe someone here had been through something similar after a hurricane. Should I just keep trying the main number or is there a special disaster benefits line?

From my experience after Hurricane Harvey, you should look into Disaster Extended Unemployment Compensation (DEUC) instead of DUA. It's specifically for people who've exhausted regular UI but still can't work due to disaster effects. You'll need to file a separate application through TWC and provide documentation showing your workplace is still closed due to Beryl damage. The deadline for applying is usually 30 days after the disaster declaration, so check if you're still within that window.

I've never heard of DEUC! Thank you so much for this information. Do you know if I need to submit photos of the damaged workplace as proof? My boss gave me a letter saying they're still rebuilding, would that be enough?

A letter from your employer stating the business remains closed due to hurricane damage should be sufficient. Make sure it includes your name, how long you've worked there, and when they expect to reopen. Also include any FEMA claim numbers if you have them. When you apply, you'll need to certify that you're still unemployed as a direct result of the disaster, not for other reasons.

Will do! I'm going to try applying for that DEUC program the other person mentioned. Seems like there should be some help for people like us who are still dealing with the aftermath.

I've helped several clients navigate this exact situation after disasters. Here's what you need to know: 1. DUA is typically for self-employed people or those who don't qualify for regular UI 2. After exhausting regular benefits, you might qualify for Disaster Extended Benefits if you can prove ongoing displacement 3. You'll need to file a separate application specifically mentioning Beryl as the cause 4. The key is documentation - employer statements, FEMA registration, proof your home/workplace remains uninhabitable Each disaster has specific assistance programs, so what was available for Harvey may differ from what's available for Beryl. I'd recommend trying to speak directly with a TWC representative for the most accurate information.

Thank you for the detailed breakdown! I've been trying for days to reach TWC but can't get through. Would going to a local workforce center be better than trying to call?

Visiting a local Workforce Solutions office in person can definitely be more productive than calling, especially for complex situations like yours. Bring all your documentation (ID, UI paperwork, employer letter, any FEMA correspondence). They can often connect directly with TWC staff on your behalf.

Have u tried using Claimyr to get through to TWC? After Beryl hit I couldn't get through for WEEKS until someone told me about it. It got me connected to a TWC agent in like 30 mins when I'd been trying for days! They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh that shows how it works. The website is claimyr.com - saved me so much frustration when I needed to fix my disaster-related claim issues.

Is that service legit? Seems sketchy that you'd have to pay just to talk to TWC when it should be free...

Yeah it's totally legit. I was skeptical too but after trying for 9 days straight to get through I was desperate. They don't handle your claim or anything - they just connect you through to TWC faster than waiting on hold forever or getting busy signals. Worth it for me when my benefits were on the line.

I'll check out that video. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get some answers. My savings are almost gone and I really need to figure out if there's any additional assistance available.

I'm sorry you're both dealing with this too. The whole system seems overwhelmed since the hurricane. I'm going to try some of the advice here and will update if I get anywhere.

After checking the latest TWC disaster assistance guidelines, I want to correct my earlier information. The program is actually called Disaster Unemployment Assistance Extension (DUAE), not DEUC as I previously stated. You need to file within 30 days of the announcement of the extension program, not 30 days from the disaster itself. You'll need to call TWC directly and specifically ask for the DUAE application related to Hurricane Beryl. Be prepared to provide proof that your continued unemployment is directly related to Beryl damage.

Thank you for the correction! I'll specifically ask for DUAE when I finally get through to someone. This is starting to make more sense now.

Just to update everyone - TWC announced a Hurricane Beryl DUAE program last week that provides up to 13 additional weeks of benefits for those who have exhausted regular UI and remain unemployed due to Beryl. You must certify that your continued unemployment is directly related to Hurricane Beryl damage. Apply through your existing TWC account and select "Apply for Disaster Extension" from the main menu. The deadline to apply is April 15, 2025.

This is EXACTLY what I needed to know! Thank you so much for sharing this update. I'm going to apply right away. I really appreciate everyone's help with this!
