TWC Appeal Decision Reversed but Portal Not Updated - How Long to Wait?
My son had his appeal hearing on August 13th for his unemployment claim (he had been denied initially for 'insufficient wages' which wasn't true). He received the decision letter on August 23rd saying the examiner's decision was REVERSED in his favor, but it's been almost 2 weeks and nothing has changed on the TWC online portal. It still shows $0 benefit amount and 'disqualified' status. How long does TWC typically take to update their system after an appeal decision? He's getting really anxious because he needs these benefits to cover rent next month. Has anyone dealt with a reversed decision recently and can tell me how long it took to see it reflected online and to actually receive payment? This would be his first payment since filing back in July.

Congrats on winning the appeal! The system updates are frustratingly slow. When I had my decision reversed in January, it took about 15-20 business days for the portal to reflect the change. Your son should keep submitting his payment requests even while waiting for the update! The most important thing is to not miss any payment request periods. Once the system updates, he'll get backpay for all the weeks he properly requested. Also, try calling TWC - I know it's nearly impossible to get through, but they might be able to tell you if there's any hold-up.

Thank you! I'll make sure he keeps doing his payment requests. He's been doing them religiously every two weeks. Do you remember if you got a separate letter about payment amounts before the system updated? Or did it just suddenly change online one day?

my friend had this happen and it took almost 3 weeks for his portal to update and then another week to get money. keep checking every day

3-4 weeks?? That's so long when you're counting on the money. Did your friend have to call them or did it just update automatically?

The TWC system is notoriously slow after appeals. For context, I work with unemployment claims frequently, and here's what typically happens:\n\n1. The appeals decision is issued and mailed (your August 23rd letter)\n2. The decision then goes to a separate processing department\n3. They recalculate the benefit amount and eligibility dates\n4. The system gets updated with the new information\n5. Payment processing begins for proper payment requests\n\nThis process typically takes 14-21 business days (not calendar days). Since your son's decision was August 23rd, I'd expect updates by September 13-20th at the latest. If nothing changes by September 20th, he should definitely contact TWC directly.\n\nDuring this time, make absolutely sure he continues filing his payment requests every two weeks and completing all required work search activities (minimum 3 per week). When the system updates, he'll receive payments for all eligible weeks he properly requested.

Thank you for breaking this down! It's so helpful to understand the process. He's definitely keeping up with his work search activities and payment requests. I'll tell him to hang tight until at least the 20th before panicking.

UGH the TWC system is TERRIBLE about updating after appeals!!! My portal took SEVEN WEEKS to update after my appeal was reversed!!! SEVEN!!! I had to call them every single day and kept getting the runaround about \

Seven weeks?? That's absolutely ridiculous! Did you eventually get all your backpay at least? I'm worried they'll somehow lose track of his case since it's related to that pandemic period.

I dealt with this exact situation in April. The portal updated 17 business days after my appeal decision letter arrived. One important thing to know - the back payments will come in separate deposits, not all at once. Each week gets processed individually.\n\nAlso, make sure your son logs in and checks the \

It definitely worked for me. I was skeptical too, but after two weeks of constant busy signals, I was desperate. Got connected to TWC in about 25 minutes. Worth it for peace of mind to confirm my appeal was actually being processed.

Is this for regular unemployment or was it for the special pandemic unemployment? Because those are totally different systems and timelines. My pandemic benefits took forever to process after appeals because they had to manually review everything.

It's for the pandemic benefits. That's what has me worried - I've heard those claims are handled differently and I'm concerned they might not process it properly since that program ended.

This is an important point. If this is for pandemic-era programs (like PUA or PEUC), the processing time can indeed be longer. However, TWC is still obligated to process valid claims from that period, even though the programs have ended. Your son should make sure any communication references his specific program type (regular UI, PUA, PEUC, etc.) to avoid confusion.

call them!!!! dont wait for the system. the computer systems there are from like 1982 i swear. you have to call and talk to a person to get anything done right. try calling at exactly 7am when they open or right after lunch at like 1pm. those were the only times i ever got through.

Thanks for the tip! I'll tell him to try calling at those specific times. Did you just use the regular TWC number or is there a special appeals department number?

i used the regular number 800-939-6631 and then you have to go through all the automated menus but eventually you can get to a real person. have your sons claim number ready they always ask for that first

Update: My son tried calling using the early morning trick (7am exactly) and actually got through! The TWC rep confirmed they received the appeal decision and it's

Great news that he was able to confirm it's in process! Unfortunately, the 2-3 week additional timeline is pretty standard. The good side is that once it's in the payment queue, it's basically guaranteed to process - it's just a matter of when. Make sure he keeps submitting those payment requests every two weeks without fail.

2-3 MORE WEEKS?!?! That's INSANE!!! They already made the decision! Why does it take a month to push a button and update a computer system? This is why people get so frustrated with TWC. At least you got confirmation though...that's more than I got for weeks.
