TWC appeal stuck for a month - no response in mail or correspondence inbox
I filed an appeal on TWC's decision about my benefits on January 7, 2025 after they disqualified me for supposedly quitting without good cause (I didn't - I was laid off when the restaurant downsized). It's been over a month now and I haven't received ANYTHING. No hearing notice, no acknowledgment letter, nothing in my online correspondence inbox, and nothing in regular mail. The appeal confirmation page said I'd get something within 10 days. I've called TWC about 40 times but just get busy signals or disconnected. Is this normal? Should I file another appeal or would that mess things up? My rent is coming due and I'm getting really worried they lost my appeal somehow.

Same EXACT thing happened to me last year!!! My appeal sat there for 6 WEEKS with no letters or anything showing up. TWC is a complete disaster with these appeals. Have you checked the "Appeal Status" section on the website? Sometimes it updates there even when nothing shows in correspondence.

•I checked everywhere on the website I could think of. Where exactly is this Appeal Status section? I can't find it anywhere in my account.

Appeals are taking 4-6 weeks minimum right now before you'll get a hearing notice. The system is extremely backlogged. Whatever you do, DON'T file another appeal as that will just reset your place in line and cause confusion. Here's what you should do: 1. Call the TWC Appeals Department directly at 512-463-2826 (not the regular TWC number) 2. Check your correspondence inbox daily (sometimes notices appear with no email notification) 3. Keep requesting payments every two weeks even while waiting 4. Start gathering evidence for your case (final paystub, any communication about the layoff, witness contact info) The good news is that if you win your appeal, you'll get backpay for all the weeks you were eligible.

•Thank you! I didn't know about the separate Appeals Department number. I'll try calling them tomorrow morning. And I've been keeping all my emails from my manager about the downsizing, so hopefully that will help my case.

I had the exact same issue but with a different reason - they said I didn't do enough work searches but I definitely did! My appeal took 7 weeks to get a hearing date and then another 3 weeks for the actual hearing. And then guess what? They canceled my hearing the day before and rescheduled it for 2 weeks later! The whole system is designed to make people give up. But don't give up! I eventually won my appeal and got all my backpay.

•Ugh, that's so frustrating they canceled last minute! I'm worried about the same thing happening. Did you have to have a lawyer or anything for your hearing?

•No lawyer needed. Just make sure you have EVERYTHING documented. Take screenshots of EVERYTHING. The hearing officer was actually really fair, but they need evidence, not just your word against the employer.

The TWC appeals process is completely broken in 2025. I waited 2 months for my hearing, and you know what? I found out they had been sending notices to my old address even though I updated it in the system THREE TIMES. The ONLY way I finally got through to a human was using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It got me through to an actual TWC agent in about 20 minutes after I'd been trying for weeks. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh The agent was able to confirm my appeal was still active and update my contact info properly. Apparently there's a glitch where the appeals department doesn't always sync with the main system's contact updates.

•It's legit. I was skeptical too but was desperate after 3 weeks of calling. They don't replace TWC - they just get you through the phone system to an actual TWC agent. After that you're talking directly to TWC.

Let me clear up a few things about the TWC appeal process that might help: 1. Appeals are currently backlogged about 6-8 weeks in Texas (not the 10 days they claim on the website) 2. By law, TWC must mail hearing notices at least 10 days before your hearing date 3. You can check your appeal status by calling 512-463-2826 AND using the automated system at 800-558-8321 and selecting option 2, then option 3 4. Keep filing your payment requests every two weeks - if you win, you'll get backpay 5. The TWC appeal success rate is actually around 30% right now, higher for layoffs vs. firings Also, very important: make sure your mailing address is current in BOTH your regular TWC account AND in the appeal system (they're separate systems). Many people miss hearings because notices go to old addresses.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I had no idea they were separate systems. I'm going to double-check both addresses today. Do you know if there's a way to see my appeal status online, or can I only check by phone?

•Unfortunately, there's no reliable online status check for appeals. The phone system is the only way to get accurate information. When you call, have your TWC claim ID number ready (not your SSN) - it makes the process faster.

Has anybody noticed that TWC seems to "lose" a lot more appeals from restaurant workers? My theory is they're overwhelmed with cases from that industry since turnover is so high. When I finally got through to them, they found my appeal was sitting in some queue with a hundred others from food service workers.

•YES!! I worked at a hotel and same thing happened! I think hospitality claims get extra scrutiny or something. When I finally had my hearing, the officer literally said they get tons of hotel/restaurant appeals and have to "prioritize" somehow.

Just to add some important info here: while you're waiting, make sure you're still doing your required 3 work search activities each week and documenting them. Even though you're not getting paid during appeal, if you win, they'll check if you met all requirements during the waiting period before issuing backpay. I've seen people win appeals but only get partial backpay because they couldn't prove work searches during the waiting period.

•I've been applying to jobs but haven't been logging them in the TWC system since I can't request payment. Should I be logging them somewhere else? I have emails from applications but not for all of them.

•Keep a separate log with dates, company names, position, and how you applied. Screenshots of confirmation emails are gold. You can also log activities in WorkInTexas.com which TWC can access if needed for verification.
