ID.me temporary paper license rejection blocking TWC benefits despite being 'approved'
Absolutely at my wits end with this ID.me verification nightmare! My husband got approved for unemployment benefits over 5 weeks ago, but we can't access a dime because of this ridiculous ID.me hurdle. His license expired and he went to renew it this Monday - they took his physical ID card and gave him the temporary paper license (standard TX procedure). Now ID.me is rejecting his verification even though THEIR OWN WEBSITE says temporary paper licenses are acceptable! He uploaded that plus a photo of his old license he took before surrendering it. Nothing works.\n\nHe's called TWC 38 times in 3 days and can never get through. The automated system just says "high call volume" and disconnects. He's sent 4 emails to ID.me support with zero response. Our rent is due next week and we're completely stuck. Has anyone dealt with this temporary license issue with ID.me? Some YouTube video suggested DMing the CEO of ID.me on Twitter as a last resort - has anyone actually gotten help that way? This is absolutely insane that a third-party verification service can block legitimate benefits that have already been approved! 😡

I went through something similar in February. The paper license should work but you need to make sure he's also providing a secondary form of ID during the verification process. Try using his Social Security card or a recent utility bill with his name on it. Also, you mentioned he's been \

Yes, he got the official Determination Letter by mail showing he's eligible for $487/week. We tried the SS card AND a utility bill already, still getting rejected. That phone number you shared - is that different from the main TWC line? Because we've been calling 800-939-6631 and can never get through!

id.me is THE WORST!!!! i spent 2 whole weeks trying to verify with them and turns out my phone camera wasnt high quality enough for their stupid face scan?? ended up having to borrow my sisters newer iphone. try using a different device maybe? also sometimes the verification works better late at night when their systems arent overloaded

We've tried 3 different phones already! His iPhone 12, my Samsung, and even our daughter's newer iPhone 14. Same rejection every time. Maybe we'll try late tonight though, haven't thought about system load being an issue. Thanks for the suggestion.

Omg I feel your pain so much!!! When my purse got stolen I had the EXACT same problem with the paper license. ID.me is seriously the worst thing that's ever happened to unemployment systems. Have your husband tried the video chat verification option? That's what finally worked for me - an actual human reviewed my documents instead of their broken algorithm.

Wait, there's a video chat verification option?? Where do you find that? We've been stuck in this endless loop of document uploads and rejections. If we could talk to a real person that would be amazing.

It's buried in their system. After like 3 failed attempts it should offer a

I work with unemployment claims professionally, and this ID.me situation has been a disaster for many legitimate claimants. Here's what I recommend:\n\n1. The video chat is your best option, but the wait times are currently 3-5 hours on average\n2. Make sure the paper license is perfectly flat (no creases) when scanning\n3. Have a backup form of photo ID ready (passport, military ID, work badge with photo)\n4. If you have access to his previous year's tax return, have that available too\n\nAnd most importantly: keep requesting your payment requests on schedule even if you're locked out! Many people stop filing their biweekly payment requests during ID.me issues, and this can create a separate problem. As long as you maintain your payment request schedule, you'll receive all backpay once the ID verification is resolved.

Thank you so much for this comprehensive advice! He doesn't have a passport but we do have his tax returns. I didn't realize we needed to keep doing the payment requests - he's missed one already because he couldn't log in. Can he catch up on that missed request or is that money just gone now?

He has 14 days from the scheduled payment request date to submit a late request. Log into the TWC account (if possible) or call Tele-Serv at 800-558-8321 to submit the missed request. If it's been more than 14 days, he'll need to call TWC directly to request a backdating of the missed payment request, which they can do with good cause - and ID.me issues qualify as good cause in most cases.

Probably not what you want to hear, but I spent THREE WEEKS trying to get through to TWC about my ID.me issues last month. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to a real person at TWC in about 15 minutes. They have a video showing exactly how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh\n\nThe TWC agent was able to place a note on my account about the ID.me verification issue and route me to their special verification team. Still took a few days to resolve, but at least I finally got someone working on my case instead of being stuck in robot-rejection purgatory.

Thank you!! We're at the point where we'll try anything. Just watched the video - did they actually get you through to someone? How does it work with the TWC verification team? Did you still have to get ID.me to verify you or did TWC have some workaround?

Yes, they got me through to a real person at TWC! The verification team at TWC created some kind of override note on my account. I still had to complete the ID.me process, but having that override note meant that when I did the video chat verification with ID.me, they were expecting my case and it went much smoother. The TWC agent also gave me specific instructions on which documents to have ready for the video verification.

this is why i ALWAYS tell ppl to keep their old ID even after getting a new 1!!! the DMV has no right to take ur ID its UR property u paid for it!!!!! next time just tell them u lost it and need a replacement, then u will have 2 IDs and avoid this whole mess. the system is DESIGNED to deny benefits to people who deserve them!!!

This is actually incorrect information. In Texas, your driver's license is state property, not your personal property. The Transportation Code explicitly states that licenses must be surrendered upon renewal or replacement. Claiming a license is lost when it isn't is making a false statement to a government agency, which can result in penalties.

Have yall tried contacting your state representative? My cousin was stuck in ID.me hell for almost two months and couldn't pay his mortgage. He finally contacted his state rep's office and they have special liaisons who can escalate these issues. His got fixed within 48 hours after that!

No, I hadn't even thought of that. Do you just look up who your representative is and call their office? Did your cousin have to provide any specific documentation when he contacted them?

Quick update for everyone dealing with ID.me issues: TWC just announced last week they're adding a secondary verification option starting in August 2025 because of all the ID.me problems. Until then, the video verification is your best bet, though wait times are currently averaging 4+ hours. Be prepared to wait and have ALL your documents ready before starting the process.

That's good news for future claimants but doesn't help us much now. My husband is going to try the video verification tonight. We've gathered everything mentioned here - paper license, tax returns, birth certificate, even our marriage certificate just in case. Fingers crossed this works!

I had almost the identical situation happen with my paper license back in January, and I can confirm that DMing the CEO on Twitter actually worked for me! I know it sounds crazy, but after six weeks of getting nowhere, I sent him a DM explaining my situation, and his assistant contacted me within hours. Had my identity verified the next day. Worth trying alongside these other excellent suggestions. And definitely use the Claimyr service mentioned above - it's the only reliable way to actually reach a TWC representative these days.

That's amazing! I would never have believed contacting a CEO would work. My husband just sent a DM about 30 minutes ago. I'll update if we hear anything. And yes, we're definitely using Claimyr tomorrow morning. At this point we just need someone - anyone - at TWC to help break this logjam.
