PA UC claim status changed from rule violation to discharge other - what does this mean for my benefits?

I'm super confused about my unemployment claim status and could really use some help understanding what's happening. I got fired from my warehouse job because I violated one of their attendance policies (missed too many days in a 90-day period). When I first filed for UC, my claim showed both 'discharge other' and 'rule violation pending/unresolved' as issues. I was kinda nervous because yeah, I did break their policy, but they never gave me any formal write-ups or a chance to explain my side through any grievance process. I checked my claim online yesterday and noticed the 'rule violation' status has completely disappeared from my claim! Now it just shows 'discharge other' which was there from the beginning. Has anyone experienced this before? Does this mean they're going to approve my claim? Or could this be a system glitch? I'm afraid to get excited but also don't want to get my hopes up if this is bad news...

This actually could be good news for your claim. When the 'rule violation' issue disappears, it typically means one of two things: either the employer didn't respond to PA UC's request for information within the timeframe, or UC has made a determination that the rule violation wasn't severe enough to disqualify you. 'Discharge other' is a general category that doesn't automatically disqualify you from benefits like willful misconduct would. The fact that you weren't given write-ups or a chance to file a grievance works in your favor. Keep checking your dashboard for a decision letter or payment information. Also check your mail/email frequently as they'll send official determination there.

Oh wow, thank you! That's encouraging. I've been checking my dashboard obsessively but haven't gotten any letters yet. How long do you think it'll take before I know for sure if I'm approved?

0 coins

I went through something similar last year. My employer tried to say I violated company policy, but since they didn't have documentation of warnings, PA UC eventually approved my claim. It took about 4 weeks from when the status changed to when I got my first payment. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for a decision!

0 coins

That's good to know! I've been filing my weekly claims even though I was pretty sure I'd get denied. Did you get backpay for all those weeks you certified while waiting?

0 coins

dont get 2 excited yet. they change those status things all the time and it doesnt mean anything. my brothers claim looked like it was approved for like 3 weeks and then he got denied. pa uc is the WORST

0 coins

Ugh, that's exactly what I'm afraid of. This whole process is so stressful!

0 coins

If you can't get a clear answer on your dashboard, you really need to talk to an actual UC rep. I spent WEEKS trying to figure out what a status change meant on my claim. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent without the constant busy signals. They connected me directly to PA UC within about 30 minutes - you can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. The agent explained exactly what was happening with my claim and processed it right there on the phone. Saved me from at least another month of waiting and stressing.

Isnt that the service thats charging people just to call unemployment? Seems wrong to have to pay money when you're already broke and unemployed.

0 coins

I thought the same thing at first, but after three weeks of calling hundreds of times and getting nowhere, I was desperate. It got me through when nothing else worked, and the agent fixed all my issues in one call. Totally worth it for me since I was about to miss rent.

0 coins

I might try this if I don't see any updates in the next week. I've called like 20 times already and can't get through.

0 coins

To answer your question about backpay - yes, if your claim is approved, you'll receive payments for all the weeks you properly certified during the waiting period, minus the waiting week. Just make sure you accurately report any earnings or work during those weeks.

0 coins

Thank you! I haven't had any other work, so I've been reporting zero earnings. I'm just getting really anxious about bills.

THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED I tell you!! They PURPOSELY make these statuses confusing so people give up! I had SIX different status changes on my claim last year before I finally got approved. The whole time NOBODY could tell me what was happening! They don't want to pay out benefits so they hope people just quit trying. Keep fighting them!!!

0 coins

this is so true! my cousin works for the state (not uc but still) and says they are totally overwhelmed and understaffed and the computer systems are from like 1995 lol

0 coins

That's what it feels like honestly. Like they're hoping I'll just give up and go away. But I really need this money while I'm looking for another job.

0 coins

Based on what you've described, the fact that your employer never issued formal write-ups is significant. In PA, employers need to show they consistently enforced their policies and gave proper warnings for rule violations to be considered disqualifying misconduct. The disappearance of the rule violation issue likely means the UC examiner determined your actions didn't rise to the level of willful misconduct. Keep filing those weekly claims and check your determination letter carefully when it arrives (it will explain the decision). If approved, you should see payments begin within 2-3 business days of the determination.

This makes me feel a lot better. My attendance issues were mostly because of some health problems, which I told my supervisor about verbally, but they still counted them against me without any official warnings that I was close to termination.

0 coins

have u checked ur mail? sometimes they send the determination letter in the mail not online and it takes forever to arrive

0 coins

I check my mail every day! Nothing from UC yet though. I'll keep looking.

0 coins

My discharge reason changed 3 times during my claim process lol. It eventually settled on 'lack of work' even though I was actually fired for being late too many times. Got my benefits though! The system is weird.

0 coins

lucky you! mine changed from misconduct to something else then BACK to misconduct and i got denied after waiting 2 months

This whole process is so unpredictable! I wish they'd just tell us clearly what's happening.

I'm going through something similar right now! My claim status has been bouncing around for weeks and it's driving me crazy. The fact that your rule violation disappeared is actually really promising - from what I've read, that usually means the employer either didn't provide enough documentation or UC determined it wasn't willful misconduct. The health issues you mentioned could definitely work in your favor too, especially if you can show you communicated with your supervisor about them. Keep documenting everything and definitely keep filing those weekly claims! I'm crossing my fingers for both of us that we get some good news soon.

0 coins

Thank you so much for the encouragement! It's really reassuring to know I'm not the only one dealing with this confusing process. I've been keeping screenshots of every status change just in case, and I'm definitely going to keep filing those weekly claims. Fingers crossed for both of us! How long have you been waiting for a decision on your claim?

0 coins

I've been dealing with PA UC for about 6 weeks now and your situation sounds very familiar! The disappearance of the "rule violation" issue is actually a really good sign - in my experience, when that happens it usually means they've determined your termination doesn't qualify as willful misconduct. The fact that you had health issues that contributed to your attendance problems and your employer never gave you formal warnings or write-ups really strengthens your case. PA UC looks at whether the employer followed proper progressive discipline procedures, and it sounds like they didn't. I'd recommend calling early in the morning (like 8:00 AM sharp) to try to get through to someone if you want more clarity, but honestly the status change you're seeing is pretty encouraging. Keep filing those weekly claims and watch for that determination letter - it should arrive within the next week or two if they've already made a decision internally.

0 coins

Thanks so much for this detailed response! It's really helpful to hear from someone who's been through a similar situation. I feel a lot more hopeful now that multiple people are saying the disappearance of the rule violation is a good sign. I'll definitely try calling at 8 AM tomorrow - that's a great tip about timing. It's so frustrating not knowing what's happening, but you're right that I should keep filing those weekly claims. Did you end up getting approved when your status changed like mine did?

I've been following this thread and wanted to add my experience - I went through almost the exact same thing about 8 months ago! I was terminated for attendance issues (also health-related) and initially had both "discharge other" and "rule violation" on my claim. When the rule violation disappeared after about 3 weeks, I got nervous thinking it was a glitch too. Turns out it was great news - I got approved and received my first payment about 10 days later, plus backpay for all the weeks I had certified. The key factors that worked in my favor were exactly what you mentioned: no formal write-ups, no progressive discipline, and the fact that my attendance issues were partially due to health problems I had communicated to my supervisor. Don't lose hope! The system is definitely confusing and the waiting is brutal, but the status change you're seeing is typically a positive indicator. Keep documenting everything and filing those weekly claims. Wishing you the best of luck!

0 coins

This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you so much for sharing your experience - it gives me so much hope to know that someone went through the same situation and got approved. The fact that you also had health-related attendance issues and no formal discipline makes me feel like my case might actually have a good chance. I've been so stressed about this whole process, but hearing that you got your backpay too is incredibly encouraging. I'm definitely going to keep filing those weekly claims and try to stay patient. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your story!

I'm dealing with something very similar right now! My claim has been pending for about 5 weeks and I've had multiple status changes that made no sense. Like others have mentioned, the disappearance of "rule violation" is usually a really positive sign - it typically means UC has determined your termination doesn't meet the threshold for willful misconduct. The health issues you mentioned are really important too. PA UC considers whether attendance problems were beyond your reasonable control, and health issues definitely fall into that category, especially when you communicated them to your supervisor. The lack of progressive discipline (no write-ups, no formal warnings) also works strongly in your favor. I know the waiting is absolutely torture when you're worried about bills, but everything you've described sounds like it's heading in the right direction. Keep filing those weekly claims religiously - if you get approved, you'll want that backpay for every week you certified. Hang in there!

0 coins

Thank you so much! It's really comforting to know that so many people have gone through similar situations and that the status change I'm seeing is generally a good sign. The part about health issues being considered beyond reasonable control makes a lot of sense - I was dealing with some ongoing medical appointments and flare-ups that made it really hard to maintain perfect attendance, even though I tried my best to communicate with my supervisor about it. I've been religiously filing those weekly claims even though I was convinced I'd get denied, so hopefully that will pay off if I do get approved. This whole community has been so helpful in making me feel less alone in this confusing process!

I just wanted to chime in with some encouragement! I had a very similar experience about a year ago - got fired for attendance issues related to my chronic migraines, initially had both "discharge other" and "rule violation" on my claim, and was terrified I'd get denied since I technically did violate their attendance policy. When the "rule violation" status disappeared after about 2 weeks, I thought it was a system error too. But it turned out to be the best news - I got my approval letter about 10 days later! The examiner noted that my employer failed to follow progressive discipline procedures and that my health condition was a mitigating factor in the attendance issues. The key things that helped my case were exactly what you have going for you: no formal write-ups, no progressive discipline process, and documented health issues that I had communicated to management. PA UC really does look at whether the employer gave you a fair chance to correct the behavior, and it sounds like yours didn't. I know it's so hard to stay positive when bills are piling up, but everything you've described sounds really promising. Keep filing those weekly claims and try to hang in there - you're probably closer to good news than you think!

0 coins

Thank you so much for sharing your story! It's incredibly reassuring to hear from someone who had almost the exact same situation as me, right down to the health issues and lack of progressive discipline. The chronic migraines situation sounds really challenging - I can totally relate to how frustrating it is when you're trying your best to manage work around health issues but the employer just sees it as policy violations. Hearing that you got approved and that the examiner specifically noted the lack of progressive discipline gives me so much hope. I've been documenting everything just in case, and I'm definitely going to keep filing those weekly claims. This whole thread has been such a lifeline - it's amazing how much better I feel knowing other people have been through this exact situation and came out okay!

I'm going through a very similar situation right now and wanted to share some hope! I was terminated about 6 weeks ago for attendance issues (also health-related - dealing with anxiety and depression that made some mornings really difficult). Like you, I initially had both "discharge other" and "rule violation" showing on my claim, and I was absolutely terrified because I technically did miss more days than their policy allowed. But here's the encouraging part - my "rule violation" status also disappeared about 2 weeks ago, and yesterday I finally got my determination letter approving my benefits! The examiner specifically mentioned that my employer didn't provide adequate documentation of progressive discipline and that my mental health struggles were a contributing factor they had to consider. What really helped my case was the same things you have going for you: no formal write-ups, no official warnings about being close to termination, and the fact that I had communicated with my supervisor about my health issues (even though it was just verbally). PA UC really does look at whether employers followed fair disciplinary procedures before terminating someone. I know the waiting is absolutely brutal when you're worried about rent and bills - I've been there these past weeks. But based on everything you've described and my own recent experience, I think you have a really strong case. Keep filing those weekly claims because if you get approved, that backpay is going to be such a relief. Sending you good vibes and hoping you get your good news soon! 🤞

This is such an encouraging update! Thank you so much for sharing your success story - it gives me so much hope to hear that you just got approved after having almost the identical situation as me. The mental health aspect you mentioned really resonates with me too, because while my attendance issues were more physical health related, there was definitely some anxiety involved in the whole situation that made everything harder to manage. It's really reassuring to know that PA UC actually does consider the lack of progressive discipline as a major factor - I was worried they'd just look at the policy violation on paper and automatically deny me. The fact that your examiner specifically noted the inadequate documentation from your employer makes me feel better about my own case since my employer also never gave me any formal warnings or write-ups. I can't imagine how relieved you must have felt getting that approval letter! I'm definitely going to keep filing those weekly claims and try to stay patient. This whole thread has been such a game-changer for my stress levels - knowing that so many people have been through similar situations and gotten positive outcomes makes the waiting so much more bearable. Congratulations on your approval and thank you again for taking the time to share your experience! 🙏

I'm so glad I found this thread! I'm dealing with almost the exact same situation right now - got terminated for attendance issues (mine were due to recurring back problems from an old injury), initially had both "discharge other" and "rule violation" on my claim, and just like you, the "rule violation" disappeared from my dashboard about a week ago! Reading everyone's experiences here is giving me so much hope. Like you, I never received any formal write-ups or warnings - my supervisor knew about my back issues because I'd mentioned them several times when I had to call out for particularly bad flare-ups, but it was all just verbal communication. No progressive discipline, no formal documentation process, nothing. The waiting is absolutely killing me because I'm behind on rent and my car payment, but seeing so many people say that the disappearance of the "rule violation" status is typically good news is making me feel cautiously optimistic for the first time in weeks. I've been filing my weekly claims religiously even though I was convinced I'd get denied. Thank you for starting this discussion - it's such a relief to know I'm not alone in this confusing process! Keeping my fingers crossed for both of us that we get some good news soon. Please update us if you hear anything!

I'm so sorry you're dealing with the stress of being behind on bills while waiting - that financial pressure makes this whole process so much worse! But honestly, based on everything I've learned from this thread, your situation sounds really promising. The back injury situation is definitely something PA UC should consider as beyond your reasonable control, especially since you communicated with your supervisor about it. It's crazy how similar all our stories are - no formal write-ups, no progressive discipline, health issues we tried to communicate about, and then that mysterious disappearance of the "rule violation" status. Seeing so many success stories here is really helping me stay hopeful too. I'll definitely update everyone if I hear anything! This community has been such a lifesaver during this stressful time. Hang in there! 🤞

I'm currently going through something very similar and this entire thread has been so incredibly helpful! I got terminated about 3 weeks ago for attendance issues related to childcare problems (my daycare kept having COVID closures and I had to stay home with my kids), and just like everyone else here, I initially had both "discharge other" and "rule violation" showing on my claim. The "rule violation" status disappeared from my dashboard yesterday and I've been frantically googling what it means, which is how I found this thread. Reading all these success stories is giving me the first real hope I've had since I filed my claim! My situation is so similar to everyone else's - no formal write-ups, no progressive discipline, and health/family circumstances that were largely beyond my control. My supervisor knew about my childcare situation because I always called when I couldn't come in, but like most of you, it was all just verbal communication with no formal documentation process. The financial stress is unreal right now - I'm a single mom and was already living paycheck to paycheck before this happened. But seeing person after person say they got approved after the same status change is making me feel like maybe there's light at the end of this tunnel. Thank you all for sharing your experiences so openly - this community support means everything when you're going through something this scary and uncertain. I'll definitely keep everyone updated if I hear anything, and I'm sending good vibes to anyone else still waiting! ✨

Your situation with the childcare issues is so relatable and honestly sounds like it should work strongly in your favor! Childcare emergencies, especially during COVID, are definitely circumstances beyond your reasonable control that PA UC should consider. Being a single mom dealing with daycare closures is exactly the kind of situation these benefits are meant to help with. The fact that your "rule violation" status disappeared is such an encouraging sign based on everything everyone else has shared here. It really seems like when that happens, it means UC has determined the termination doesn't qualify as willful misconduct. The pattern is so consistent across all these stories! I totally understand the financial stress - I'm also living paycheck to paycheck and the waiting is brutal when bills don't stop coming. But honestly, reading your story alongside everyone else's gives me even more confidence that these status changes mean good things are coming. Keep filing those weekly claims and hang in there! This thread has been such a lifeline for all of us going through this stressful process. Sending you so much support! 💪

I'm going through the EXACT same thing right now and this thread is giving me so much hope! Got fired 4 weeks ago for attendance issues (dealing with chronic fatigue syndrome that made some days impossible), and just like everyone else here, I started with both "discharge other" and "rule violation" on my claim. The "rule violation" disappeared from my dashboard 3 days ago and I've been obsessively checking for updates ever since. Reading all these success stories where people got approved after the same status change is the first time I've felt optimistic about this whole mess! My employer never gave me any formal warnings either - I always called in when I couldn't make it due to my condition, and my manager knew about my health issues, but everything was just verbal. No write-ups, no progressive discipline process, nothing documented. Based on what everyone's sharing here, that seems to be a really important factor that works in our favor. The waiting is absolutely torture when you're worried about rent and groceries, but seeing so many people say this status change is typically good news is keeping me sane. I've been filing my weekly claims even though I was convinced I'd be denied, so hopefully that backpay will come through if I get approved. Thank you to everyone sharing their experiences - this community support is everything when you're going through something this stressful and confusing alone! 🙏

I'm so sorry you're dealing with chronic fatigue syndrome on top of all this unemployment stress - that combination must be absolutely exhausting! But honestly, your situation sounds really promising based on everything I've learned from this amazing thread. Chronic fatigue is definitely a legitimate medical condition that should be considered beyond your reasonable control, especially when you were communicating with your manager about it. The pattern here is so clear - almost everyone who's had that "rule violation" status disappear has ended up getting approved, and we all have the same key factors: no formal write-ups, no progressive discipline, and health/family circumstances we communicated about but only verbally. It really seems like PA UC looks at whether employers followed proper procedures before terminating someone, and when they don't, these rule violation issues get dropped. I'm also filing my weekly claims religiously even though I was terrified of getting denied. The waiting is brutal when bills are piling up, but this whole community has given me so much hope that we're all heading toward good news. Keep hanging in there - it sounds like you're doing everything right! 💪

I'm in almost the exact same boat right now and this thread is like a beacon of hope! Got terminated 5 weeks ago for attendance issues related to my elderly father's medical appointments (he has dementia and I'm his primary caregiver). Started with both "discharge other" and "rule violation" on my claim, and just like everyone else here, the "rule violation" mysteriously vanished from my dashboard last Friday. I've been checking my account obsessively since then trying to figure out what it means, and finding this discussion with so many similar experiences and positive outcomes is honestly the first time I've been able to breathe normally in weeks! My situation matches the pattern everyone's describing perfectly - no formal write-ups, no progressive discipline, just verbal communication with my supervisor about my dad's situation when I had to take him to appointments. They knew about my caregiving responsibilities but never put me through any kind of formal warning process before letting me go. The financial anxiety has been crushing - I'm supporting both of us on unemployment now - but reading story after story of people getting approved after this same status change is giving me real hope for the first time. I've been dutifully filing my weekly claims even though I was sure I'd be denied, so fingers crossed that backpay comes through if this goes well. Thank you all for sharing your experiences so openly. This community is a lifesaver when you're navigating this confusing system alone! Keeping everyone in my thoughts who's still waiting for answers. 🤞❤️

Your situation as a caregiver for your father with dementia is exactly the kind of circumstance that PA UC should absolutely consider as beyond your reasonable control. Family caregiving responsibilities, especially for someone with a serious medical condition like dementia, are legitimate reasons that should work strongly in your favor. The fact that your "rule violation" status disappeared fits the exact same pattern we're all seeing here - it really seems like when UC determines that a termination doesn't qualify as willful misconduct (usually due to lack of progressive discipline and extenuating circumstances), that status just vanishes from the system. The consistency across all these stories is so encouraging! I can't imagine how stressful it must be supporting both yourself and your dad while waiting for this decision. But based on everything everyone has shared, you have such a strong case - no formal warnings, legitimate caregiving responsibilities, and that promising status change. Keep filing those weekly claims because that backpay is going to be such a relief when it comes through. This whole community has been such a source of strength during this scary process - we're all rooting for each other! 💙

I'm going through the exact same situation right now and this thread has been such a lifesaver! Got terminated 3 weeks ago for attendance issues related to my anxiety and depression - some mornings I just couldn't physically get out of bed, which I know sounds awful but it's the reality of mental health struggles. Like everyone else here, I started with both "discharge other" and "rule violation" on my claim, and the "rule violation" status disappeared from my dashboard yesterday! I've been panicking about what it means, but reading all these success stories is giving me the first real hope I've had since this nightmare started. My employer never gave me any formal warnings either - I always called in when I couldn't make it, and my supervisor knew I was struggling with mental health issues, but like most of you it was all just verbal communication. No write-ups, no formal discipline process, nothing documented before they just let me go. The waiting is absolutely brutal when you're already dealing with depression and now financial stress on top of it. But seeing person after person say they got approved after this same status change is keeping me from completely falling apart. I've been filing my weekly claims even though I was convinced I'd be denied. Thank you all for being so open about your experiences - it means everything to know I'm not alone in this confusing and terrifying process. This community support is honestly helping my mental health more than anything right now! 🙏

Your mental health struggles are absolutely legitimate and valid reasons for attendance issues - please don't feel awful about that! Depression and anxiety can be incredibly debilitating, and the fact that you were still communicating with your supervisor about your struggles shows you were trying your best to handle the situation responsibly. Based on everything I've read in this thread, your case sounds really strong. The disappearance of that "rule violation" status seems to be a consistent positive indicator across everyone's experiences here. PA UC clearly looks at whether employers followed proper progressive discipline procedures, and it sounds like yours didn't give you any formal warnings or chances to address the issues before termination. I totally understand how the waiting amplifies everything when you're already dealing with mental health challenges. The financial stress on top of depression is such a horrible combination. But honestly, seeing the pattern of success stories here with the exact same status change you're experiencing gives me so much hope for your situation. Keep filing those weekly claims - that backpay is going to be such a relief when it comes through. This whole community has been amazing for support during such a stressful process. We're all rooting for each other! Hang in there - based on everything shared here, I really think good news is coming your way soon. 💙

I'm dealing with almost the exact same situation and this thread has been such a huge source of comfort! Got terminated about 4 weeks ago for attendance issues - I was dealing with some family emergency situations where I had to help care for my sick grandmother, plus I was having transportation issues with my car breaking down multiple times. Like everyone else here, I initially had both "discharge other" and "rule violation" showing on my claim. The "rule violation" status just disappeared from my dashboard 2 days ago and I've been frantically trying to figure out what it means! Reading all these success stories where people got approved after the same status change is honestly the first time I've felt hopeful in weeks. My situation follows the exact same pattern as everyone else - no formal write-ups, no progressive discipline, just me calling in and explaining the situation to my supervisor each time. They knew about my family situation and car troubles but never put me through any kind of formal warning process or gave me a chance to work out solutions. The financial stress has been eating me alive - I'm already behind on my phone bill and really worried about rent next week. But seeing so many people say this status change typically means good news is keeping me from completely losing it. I've been filing my weekly claims religiously even though I was sure I'd get denied. Thank you all for sharing your stories so openly - knowing I'm not alone in this scary and confusing process means everything right now! This community support has honestly been keeping me sane. Fingers crossed we all get the good news we're hoping for! 🤞
