PA UC board appeal wait times? Who to contact when stuck in limbo?
I'm at my wits end trying to figure out this board appeal situation with PA unemployment. I got denied at my referee hearing back in February (wasn't prepared enough I guess) and filed my appeal to the Board of Review on March 7th. It's now almost May and I haven't heard ANYTHING! Not even confirmation they received my appeal. The online portal just shows my referee decision as 'appeal filed' but nothing else. I've been calling the UC service center every day for 2 weeks straight and can never get through. Does anyone know who I can actually talk to about board appeals? Is there a direct number? And how long are these taking in 2025? My bills are piling up and I'm getting desperate.

Board appeals are unfortunately taking about 8-10 weeks right now. There's not a direct number specifically for the Board of Review - they operate separately from the regular UC service center. Your best bet is to send a message through your dashboard specifically mentioning your board appeal, or mail a letter to the Board of Review office in Harrisburg asking for status. Make sure to include your claim number and the date you filed the appeal. If it's been almost 8 weeks, you should be hearing something soon.

•Thanks for the info. I tried sending a message through the dashboard last week but haven't gotten any response. Do you know the mailing address for the Board office? I'll try sending something there too. This is so frustrating!

Ugh the board appeals are the WORST!! My appeal took almost 12 weeks back in Jan and I never got ANY updates until suddenly the decision arrived in my mail. The system is completely broken!!! When I called they just told me 'its being processed' and nothing else. They seriously don't care that people are suffering while waiting.

Here's some practical advice from someone who navigated this recently. The Board of Review's address is 651 Boas Street, Room 1116, Harrisburg, PA 17121. When you write to them, be very specific about the date you filed your appeal and include a copy of your appeal confirmation if you have it. Also, you might want to try contacting your state representative's office. My board appeal was stuck for weeks until I reached out to my rep's office - they have special contacts at UC who can check on appeal status. The waiting is terrible but hang in there.

•Thank you so much for the address! I'll definitely write to them tomorrow. And I hadn't thought about contacting my state rep - that's a great idea. Which information did you have to provide to your rep's office when you contacted them?

you should try claimyr they got me thru to someone at pa uc when i was in your situation. nobody else could help me but i used claimyr.com and actually talked to someone who gave me status on my appeal. they have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 i was skeptical but it worked when nothing else did

•Has anyone else used this service? I'm having the same issue with my appeal and I'm desperate to talk to an actual person, but I'm hesitant about using third-party services with the unemployment system.

•I've heard of people using it successfully. Just to clarify though - while Claimyr can help you reach a UC rep who might be able to check on your appeal status, they don't have direct access to the Board of Review system. But getting confirmation that your appeal was received is still valuable information.

•Did your friend's online portal ever update? Mine still just says 'appeal filed' next to the referee decision.

One more important thing to keep in mind: under PA UC regulations, even while your Board appeal is pending, you MUST continue filing your weekly claims if you want to receive benefits for those weeks in case you win your appeal. Many people stop filing during the appeal process and then can't claim those weeks retroactively if they win.

•Oh wow, I didn't know that! I've been filing every week but wasn't sure if it was even worth it. Thank you for that information - I'll definitely keep filing.

I went through this hell in March. Called and called and got nowhere. Finally got a state rep involved AND sent certified mail to the Board office requesting status. A week later I suddenly got my decision (approved thank god). Weird thing is my portal never updated during the whole process. The system is completely broken but don't give up!

•Congratulations on your approval! That gives me hope. I'm definitely going to contact my state rep tomorrow. Did you just call their local office? And how long did your appeal take in total?

•Thanks! I just called my state rep's local office and they had me fill out a form authorizing them to inquire about my case. My appeal took about 10 weeks total from filing to decision. Fingers crossed for you!

I'm in the exact same situation! Filed my board appeal in early March after my referee hearing went badly. The not knowing is the worst part. I literally check my mailbox 5 times a day hoping for something. Has anyone received a board approval after being denied by a referee? I'm losing hope...

•Yes, Board reversals of referee decisions do happen! The Board reviews the entire record independently. If there were procedural issues with your hearing or if the referee misapplied the law, the Board can and will reverse the decision. Don't lose hope.

Final update for those following this thread: I checked with a friend who works adjacent to the UC system, and current Board appeal timeframes are averaging 8-10 weeks, but can stretch to 12+ weeks in complex cases. The backlog fluctuates based on volume. Using your state rep and sending a status request via certified mail to the Board office are your best options for getting updates while waiting.

•Thank you all for the helpful advice! I'll be contacting my state rep tomorrow and sending certified mail to the Board office with all my info. Will update if I hear anything. Really appreciate everyone's help - this process is so isolating and frustrating.
