PA UC Appeal filed 3+ months ago with no hearing date - what's the normal wait time?

I filed an appeal for my PA unemployment claim on February 15th, 2025 after being denied benefits due to an employer dispute about my availability. It's now mid-May and I STILL haven't received a hearing date. The online portal just shows 'Appeal Pending' with no additional information. I've called the UC service center at least 15 times (always busy), and when I finally got through last week, the representative just said 'appeals are backlogged' without giving me any timeframe. Is this normal?? Does anyone know how long appeals are taking these days? I'm getting desperate as I've been without income for months while waiting for this to be resolved. Have others experienced similar delays? What should I do at this point?

Unfortunately the PA UC appeal system is incredibly backed up right now. I filed an appeal in late December 2024 and didn't get my hearing date until early April 2025 - so about 3.5 months of waiting. The referee told me during my hearing that they're running about 12-16 weeks behind schedule statewide. Some appeal offices are faster than others though, so it depends on your county. I'd recommend continuing to file your biweekly claims during this waiting period so you can receive backpay if your appeal is successful!

Thanks for sharing your experience! I've definitely been keeping up with my biweekly claims. Did you do anything special to prepare for your hearing when you finally got the date? I'm worried I'll mess something up after waiting so long.

I know how frustrating it is! I was in the same boat last year. Make sure you're documenting everything while you wait - save any emails or communications with your employer that might help your case.

The current average wait time for UC appeals in Pennsylvania is approximately 14-18 weeks from filing date to scheduled hearing. This is significantly longer than the pre-pandemic timeframe, which was typically 6-8 weeks. Some important steps while you wait: 1. Continue filing your biweekly claims without fail 2. Update your address in the system if you move 3. Check both mail and email daily for notices 4. Gather documentation supporting your case (work schedules, emails from employer, etc.) 5. Prepare a clear, concise explanation of why you should qualify for benefits When your hearing is finally scheduled, you'll typically get 7-10 days notice. Be sure to call and confirm your attendance immediately.

Thank you for this detailed information. It's frustrating to hear that 14-18 weeks is now considered normal, but at least I know I'm not being specifically overlooked. I've been collecting all my documentation already, so I'll keep organizing that while I wait.

My cousin went through this and she said the trick is to contact your state representative's office! They can sometimes help speed up the process or at least get you information about where your appeal stands. Worth a try!

I actually did this last year when my claim was stuck in limbo. I contacted my state rep's office and they were able to get me an update within a week! Didn't necessarily speed up my hearing date, but at least I knew what was happening. Definitely recommend this approach.

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to someone at the UC service center? I was in a similar situation with my appeal, and after weeks of busy signals, I used Claimyr.com to get through to a live person. They don't speed up your appeal, but they got me connected to someone who could at least check the status and give me more detailed information about where my appeal was in the queue. Saved me hours of redialing. There's a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2

I've never heard of this service before. Does it actually work? Spending hours redialing just to get a busy signal is driving me crazy.

It worked for me! I was skeptical at first but after trying to get through for 2 weeks straight with no luck, I gave it a shot. Got connected to a UC rep in about 20 minutes. They can't make miracles happen with the appeal timeline, but at least I was able to confirm my appeal was in the system and get an estimated timeframe.

Also worth noting - if you're experiencing severe financial hardship while waiting (eviction risk, utility shutoffs, etc.), you can request your appeal to be expedited. Call the UC service center and specifically ask for your appeal to be marked as a financial hardship case. You'll need to provide documentation proving the hardship, but it can sometimes move your case up in the queue.

This is really helpful information. I am getting close to not being able to pay rent next month, so I might qualify for this. I'll try to get through to someone this week to request expedited handling.

Yes, I have a confirmation number and printout of the appeal submission. That's a scary thought though - I would be devastated if I found out my appeal wasn't even in the system after all this waiting!

Just as an update on my earlier comment - once you do get your hearing notice, start preparing right away! I only had 8 days notice before my hearing date. Make sure you have all your documentation ready, and if your employer is disputing your claim, be prepared to address their specific reasons for contest. In my case, having detailed notes about my final weeks of work made a huge difference in the outcome.

Thanks for the advice. Did your hearing end up being in person or over the phone? I'm trying to plan ahead for either scenario.

Mine was over the phone - most of them are these days. The referee called me exactly at the scheduled time, my former employer was also on the call. The whole thing took about 45 minutes. Have all your documents spread out in front of you during the call so you can reference them quickly!

I know waiting for your appeal hearing is super stressful. While you're waiting, make sure you're fulfilling all your work search requirements too! I've heard horror stories of people winning their appeals but then losing benefits because they didn't keep up with required work searches during the waiting period. Keep detailed records of every job you apply for!

Good reminder! I've been maintaining my weekly job applications and keeping a spreadsheet with all the details. I don't want to win the appeal only to get disqualified for something else!
