PA UC Board of Review appeal timeline - stuck since June with no decision

Hey all, I'm getting super worried about my PA UC appeal with the Board of Review. I filed it back in June after losing at the referee hearing (was denied benefits because they said I didn't provide enough proof of job search). It's now been over 5 months with ZERO communication! My dashboard just shows "pending" and nothing else. I tried calling the UC service center about 50 times but can't get through to anyone who knows anything about board appeals. Someone at CareerLink told me board appeals can take "forever" - like potentially a year or more?! Is this true? Has anyone here actually WON a Board of Review appeal and how long did yours take? I'm about to lose my apartment and don't know what to do anymore...

mines been in appeal since april and still nothing so i feel ur pain

April?! That's even worse than me... have you tried calling them? Did they give you any timeline at all?

Yes, I did win my Board appeal but it took almost 8 months. My case was for wrongful termination where my employer said I was fired for attendance but I had medical documentation for all absences. The Board overturned the referee decision in my favor but it was an EXTREMELY long wait. I think the Board is seriously backed up right now.

8 months? That's insane but at least you eventually won. Did you get all your backpay at once when they finally approved it? I'm worried they'll deny me again after all this waiting.

Yes, I got all the backpay at once about 2 weeks after the decision. It was a huge relief but the waiting period was brutal. The important thing is to keep checking your dashboard every few days and keep ANY mail they send you. Make sure they have your current address too.

I waited 10 months for mine and ended up losing anyway. The whole system is BROKEN!!! They don't care about us at all, just protecting employers. Good luck but don't hold your breath.

While it's true the wait times are frustrating, the Board of Review is actually separate from the UC Service Center and they review each case independently. If you've provided strong documentation for your job search activities (which is what your case is about), you still have a chance. The statistics show about 30% of Board appeals are successful, so it's definitely not impossible.

I had success with my Board appeal but it took about 7 months. I won because I had PROOF of everything. For your job search issue, do you have screenshots or printouts of all your job applications? Emails from employers? That's what will make or break your case. While you're waiting, keep looking for jobs and document EVERYTHING.

My cousin waited 9 months for his board appeal and then they just said the referee was right anyway. Total waste of time. He should have just found another job instead of waiting on unemployment.

I've been looking for jobs this whole time, but having the backpay would really help me catch up on bills. Sounds like I should expect at least a few more months of waiting based on everyone's experiences.

One thing nobody mentioned - you should be checking your mail CAREFULLY. The Board doesn't always update the dashboard right away. My decision came in the mail first, and the dashboard didn't update until almost 2 weeks later. Also, have you tried contacting your state representative's office? They sometimes can make inquiries that get responses when we regular folks can't get through.

That's a good tip about the mail - I've been obsessively checking my dashboard but maybe I should watch my mailbox more carefully. I didn't think about contacting my state rep... might try that if I don't hear anything by Christmas.

PA Board of Review appeals are taking 6-9 months on average right now. The job search requirements can be tricky - you need to show you applied to at least 2 jobs and performed 1 work search activity each week. For your appeal to succeed, you'll need documentation showing you met these requirements for each week you claimed. While waiting, I'd recommend trying to reach a UC representative to check on the status. Many people have success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent quickly instead of waiting on hold for hours. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 that shows how it works. The agent might not be able to expedite your appeal, but they can verify it's still active and hasn't fallen through cracks.

Thank you - I'll check out that Claimyr thing because I'm going crazy not being able to reach anyone. I did save emails from job applications but I'm not sure if I have proof for every single week. I might have missed documenting a few work search activities when I was really stressed. Hoping that doesn't ruin my whole case.

Update on my earlier comment - I just checked with a friend who works at the CareerLink office, and she said the Board is prioritizing cases from earlier in the year right now, so your June appeal should be coming up in their queue soon. They're working through a backlog from 2024, but they are making progress. Hang in there!

That's actually really helpful to know! At least there's some hope my case might be looked at soon. Thank you for checking.

I know this waiting period is incredibly frustrating. While you're waiting for the Board decision, make sure you're documenting any financial hardship this is causing (risk of eviction, utility shutoffs, etc.). If you win your appeal, this information won't increase your benefits, but it could potentially help expedite your backpay processing. Also, many counties have emergency rental assistance programs that might help while you're waiting.

I'm in a similar situation - filed my Board appeal in July after being denied for "insufficient work search documentation." It's been 4+ months with absolutely nothing. The silence is the worst part! I've been keeping a detailed spreadsheet of every job application since then just in case they ask for more proof. Has anyone had success getting updates by emailing the Board directly, or do they only communicate through mail? This whole process feels like being in limbo.

I feel your pain with the silence - it's absolutely maddening! From what I've seen in other threads, the Board doesn't really respond to emails and they communicate almost exclusively through mail. Your spreadsheet idea is smart though - I wish I had been that organized from the start. At least we know from others here that July appeals should be coming up soon since they're working through the 2024 backlog. The waiting is brutal but it sounds like we just have to hang in there a bit longer.
