Can I still get PA UC benefits with one unresolved issue on my claim?

I'm freaking out a little bit. My PA unemployment claim shows one open issue but everything else looks approved. Will they still pay me or do I need to wait for this issue to be resolved? I got laid off from my nursing assistant job 3 weeks ago and I've been filing my weekly claims, but haven't received any payments. My dashboard says 'claim under review' with one issue. I really need this money soon for rent. Has anyone received payments with an open issue still on their account? Will they pay me retroactively once it's fixed?

It really depends on what the issue is. Some issues block all payments until resolved, others might only affect a specific week. You should be able to see what the issue is under the 'Issues and Determinations' section of your dashboard. What does it say there?

It just says 'employment separation' under issues. I don't understand because my employer told me they wouldn't contest my unemployment. Should I call them to make sure they responded to PA UC?

Unfortunately employment separation issues will definitely hold up ALL your payments until it's resolved. The UC office has to determine if you're eligible based on why/how you separated from your job. Even if your employer doesn't contest it, PA UC still has to make an official determination. I was in the same situation last year.

yeah this is why so many people end up waiting foreevvver to get paid. they gotta review everything first. its dumb.

I had this exact situation with a separation issue. What's happening is they need to verify the reason for your job ending to confirm you qualify. Even if your employer doesn't contest it, PA still needs to complete this step. You should call them ASAP to check the status and possibly speed things up. It's nearly impossible to get through on the regular line, but I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to a UC rep in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 The rep was able to see that my employer had already responded and they just needed to process it, which they did while I was on the phone. Got paid for all my back weeks 2 days later.

Thank you so much for this info! I'll definitely check out Claimyr because I've been trying to call for days and either get busy signals or disconnected. Did they ask you any specific questions about your separation when you finally got through?

You won't get a penny till they clear that separation issue. When I lost my job in 2022 I had to wait SIX WEEKS before they cleared my separation issue!!! The system is DESIGNED to make you wait and suffer. They're hoping you'll give up and stop filing! I was calling 50+ times a day and couldn't get through. It's criminal how they treat people who are already struggling.

I understand your frustration, but the delays aren't intentionally designed to make people suffer. They're mostly due to understaffing and an outdated system. I've worked with the department (not as an employee but as an advocate), and the staff genuinely wants to help but are overwhelmed with cases.

my claim had an issue to but it was for identity verification. took like 10 days to clear up and then i got paid for all the weeks at once. if your employer already said they wont fight it you should be ok eventually but ya gotta keep filing every week

identity verification is different tho. separation issues take WAY longer to resolve in my experience

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the issue to be resolved! This is critical. Once they clear the separation issue, you'll get paid for all those weeks at once, but only if you've been filing consistently. I've seen so many people make the mistake of stopping their weekly claims while waiting.

I've definitely been filing every week! That's good to know they'll pay everything once resolved. My savings are getting really low though so I hope it doesn't take too much longer.

To give you a bit more insight on the separation issue: PA UC has to verify a few things: 1. That you lost your job through no fault of your own 2. That you worked enough qualifying quarters 3. That you're available and actively looking for work The first item is what's holding things up. Even if your employer doesn't contest it, UC still needs confirmation from them about why the employment ended. Have you received any mail or messages from UC asking for additional information? Sometimes they need you to clarify details of the separation.

I received one letter asking for a phone interview about my separation, but the date on it was for two weeks from now! That seems like such a long wait. Is that normal?

The interview date two weeks out is unfortunately very normal. But here's what you can do - use that Claimyr service I mentioned to reach a rep and ask if they can move up your interview date or possibly even conduct it on the spot. Sometimes if your case is straightforward and your employer has already submitted their response, the rep can make a determination immediately. That's what happened with me - my scheduled interview was still weeks away, but the rep I spoke to saw all the information was already in the system and resolved it immediately.

This is good advice. I've seen cases where calling in actually got the issue resolved right away because all the necessary information was already in the system but hadn't been processed yet.

Update: I took the advice here and used Claimyr to get through to UC. It actually worked! The agent I spoke with was able to see that my employer had already verified my layoff was due to lack of work. She processed my claim while on the phone and said I should see payments within 2-3 business days for all my back weeks! Thank you all for your help - I was so stressed about this!

That's great news! Glad to hear it worked out quickly for you. Just remember to keep filing your weekly claims and completing your work search activities (applying to jobs, attending career fairs, etc.). You need to document at least 2 work search activities each week to maintain eligibility.

That's awesome news Sean! So happy you got it resolved quickly. This is a perfect example of why it's worth trying different approaches to reach UC - sometimes the information is already there and just needs someone to process it. Hopefully your experience helps other people in similar situations know that there are options beyond just waiting for scheduled interviews. Thanks for updating us on how it turned out!

This is such a relief to read! I'm in a similar situation with an employment separation issue that's been dragging on for weeks. Hearing that the Claimyr service actually worked gives me hope. I've been so worried about making rent next month. Thanks for sharing your success story - it really helps to know there's light at the end of the tunnel for those of us stuck in this bureaucratic nightmare!

@Sean Flanagan Congratulations on getting your claim resolved! Your story is really encouraging for others dealing with similar issues. It's also a great reminder that persistence pays off - you kept filing weekly, gathered advice from the community, and took action to get through to UC. For anyone else reading this with separation issues, Sean's experience shows that even when things look stuck, there are often solutions available if you know where to look. The combination of community support and using services like Claimyr can really make a difference when you're navigating the UC system.

This is exactly the kind of community support that makes such a difference when dealing with government bureaucracy! Sean's journey from panic to resolution really shows how valuable it is to reach out and get advice from people who've been through similar experiences. I'm new here but already seeing how helpful everyone is with sharing practical solutions and emotional support. It's frustrating that we need workarounds like Claimyr to access services we're entitled to, but I'm grateful there are options and people willing to share what works.
