what ever you do, DON'T say no to self-employment if you actually are self-employed... thats considered fraud and can get u in big trouble. my friend did that and ended up having to pay back all her benefits plus penalties!! just be honest and keep going with the application.
Oh wow, that's scary! Definitely don't want to commit fraud. I'll keep going with the application and report everything correctly. Thanks for the warning!
Just to add some specifics that might help: When you file your weekly certifications, PA UC has a partial benefit credit (PBC) that allows you to earn some money before your benefits start being reduced. In 2025, you can earn up to about 30% of your weekly benefit amount before reductions start. If your contractor work varies week to week, some weeks you might get full benefits and others reduced, depending on what you earn. Just make sure to accurately report ALL earnings during the week you PERFORM the work (not when you get paid).
That's really helpful to know about the 30% threshold! My contractor work definitely varies week to week, so some weeks I might not hit that threshold. And good to know it's when I do the work, not when I get paid - that would have confused me.
try calling ur state rep!!!!! they helped my cousin when his money was stuck for like 2 weeks. sometimes they can push it through faster
This is actually good advice. State representatives' offices often have dedicated staff who can escalate unemployment issues. Their constituent services can sometimes get results when normal channels fail. Just make sure you have your claim ID number and all relevant dates ready when you contact them.
UPDATE: Just checked my card at 6am and the money FINALLY showed up!!! 😅 That's 5 days total after filing my claim and 3 days after getting the "payment processed" email. No explanation, no pending transaction, it just appeared. Guess I'll need to adjust my bill payment schedule going forward to account for these delays. Thanks everyone for the advice and commiseration!
Glad to hear it came through! This seems to be the new normal with Money Network unfortunately. Better to expect 5 days and be pleasantly surprised if it's faster.
The EXACT same thing happened to me last month! Payment date was Tuesday but didn't hit my account till Thursday!! I called PA UC like 50 times and couldn't get through to ask about it. Then I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent in like 20 minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 showing how it works. The agent told me payments can take up to 3 business days depending on your bank even though the dashboard shows it as paid. Saved me so much stress knowing it wasn't lost! Their website is claimyr.com if you need to talk to someone about your payment.
@questioning_it - It's actually legit. I was suspicious too but they just help you bypass the phone queue. Was worth it when I had an urgent issue that needed fixing before my benefit year ended.
Thanks everyone! My payment just hit my account this morning, so it took exactly one business day after the payment date. I'll definitely remember that Claimyr service if I run into problems later though.
whats this tour company if u dont mind me asking? my cousin is looking for work like that
It's a small company called Heritage Walking Tours that does specialized history tours. They're only hiring 3 new guides right now and the positions are filled, but they said they'll be expanding in summer 2025 if your cousin is still looking then!
One other important thing to remember - if your training pay is significant, it might put you over the partial benefit threshold for that week. For example, if your weekly benefit amount is $400 and your partial benefit credit is $100, then earning more than $500 in a week would make you ineligible for benefits that specific week. But you would still be eligible for the following weeks when you have no earnings until your job officially starts in March. Just make sure to answer all weekly claim questions honestly. Better to have one week without benefits than to risk an overpayment issue later on.
Thank you for explaining this! My weekly benefit is $320, and the training only pays $150, so I should still get partial benefits that week. I'll definitely report everything accurately - not worth the risk of dealing with overpayment issues down the road.

Yes! A doctor's statement would be extremely valuable evidence. Ideally, it should confirm: 1. The medical necessity of the surgery 2. Why it couldn't be postponed 3. The required recovery time 4. Any work restrictions during recovery This documentation directly supports your claim that you had a necessitous and compelling reason to leave employment. Have your doctor address it "To Whom It May Concern" and make it as specific as possible about your particular situation. General notes are less helpful than statements that directly address the circumstances of your unemployment claim.

•OP listen to this person! Medical documentation is THE key to winning these appeals. My case dragged on for months until I finally got my surgeon to write a detailed letter explaining everything. After that, they reversed the decision in like 2 weeks. The system is designed to wear you down so you'll give up. DON'T GIVE UP!

wait i'm confused abt something... if you had a surgery and your employer denied time off, couldn't you have filed for FMLA instead of quitting? doesn't that protect your job? not criticizing just wondering if that was an option

•That's actually a good question. I wasn't eligible for FMLA because I'd only been at the company for 9 months, and you need to be employed for 12 months to qualify. Otherwise I definitely would have gone that route!

•This is an important distinction for your case. Make sure to mention your FMLA ineligibility in your appeal. It further strengthens your argument that you had no alternative but to resign, as you lacked access to federally protected medical leave.
