3 weeks since PA UC appeal hearing with no decision - should I call or wait?
I had my UC appeal hearing exactly 3 weeks ago (Jan 22nd) and still haven't received ANY decision. The referee said I should hear something within 7-10 days but that window is long gone. Should I call the appeals office to check if my case fell through the cracks? I'm getting really worried because my landlord is pressuring me about rent and I've been stretching my savings to the absolute limit. Has anyone else experienced such a long wait time after their hearing? I've read that most people get their decisions within 1-2 weeks, so I'm scared this delay means they're going to deny me. Will calling the office somehow hurt my case or mark me as a "problem claimant"? I'm desperate for any advice!

•Thanks for sharing your experience. Did you ever contact them during your wait? I'm just so stressed about money right now and hate being in limbo.

Calling won't hurt your case at all. The referees make their decisions independent of any follow-up contacts. In my experience working with PA UC claims, decisions can sometimes take 3-4 weeks right now because of staffing issues at the appeals office. If you want to check, call the UC Service Center (not the appeals office directly) and ask for a status update. They can see in the system if a decision has been made but not yet mailed/posted to your dashboard. Have your appeal confirmation number ready when you call.

•Thank you for this info! I feel better knowing calling won't hurt my case. I'll try the UC Service Center tomorrow morning.

•Good luck getting thru to them!!! I tried for TWO WEEKS straight and kept getting busy signals or disconnected after 2 hours on hold! The whole system is BROKEN and they don't care about us at all!!!

I waited nearly 5 weeks for my appeal decision back in November. Called a bunch, left messages, emailed - nothing helped speed it up. Just showed up randomly one day. What was your appeal for if you don't mind me asking? Mine was for a job separation issue and I won. I'm wondering if different types of appeals take longer?

•Mine was also for a job separation issue - I was laid off but my employer initially contested it saying I quit. During the hearing, I showed emails proving it was their decision. The referee seemed to think my evidence was solid, so I was hopeful, but now this delay has me second-guessing.

•That sounds really similar to my situation! And I ultimately won my appeal, so try not to stress too much about the delay - it's probably just bureaucracy being slow, not a sign about the decision itself.

If you're struggling to reach someone at the UC Service Center, you might want to try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation waiting for an appeal decision and couldn't get through to anyone. Claimyr helped me connect with a real person at PA UC in less than an hour instead of spending days trying to get through. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. I found out my decision had actually been made but hadn't been uploaded to my dashboard yet.

•is that service legit?? seems kinda weird to pay someone just to call unemployment for you but i guess if it works...

•It worked for me when I was desperate. They don't call for you - they just help you skip the busy signal and hold time. You still talk directly to UC yourself.

Long-time PA unemployment navigator here. Appeal decisions legally must be issued within 60 days, but most are completed within 2-4 weeks. The delay doesn't necessarily indicate a denial - it's more likely due to the referee's caseload or complexity of your particular situation. Here's what you can do: 1. Call the UC Service Center at 1-888-313-7284 and ask for a status update on your appeal. Have your appeal confirmation number ready. 2. If you can't get through (very common), try contacting your state representative's office. They have direct lines to UC and can often get status updates within 1-2 business days. 3. Check your dashboard AND mail daily. Sometimes decisions are mailed before they appear online. 4. Prepare financially as best you can for both outcomes - if approved, you'll receive back payments for all eligible weeks. I've seen hundreds of cases where long waits still resulted in approvals, so try not to read too much into the timing.

•Thank you so much for this detailed response! I didn't know about contacting my state rep - that's really helpful. I've been checking both mail and online obsessively. If approved, would back payments come all at once or weekly like regular benefits?

•Back payments typically come in a single lump sum on your Money Network card within 2-3 business days after the decision is finalized in the system. Be aware that taxes may not be withheld from the lump sum even if you elected to have taxes withheld from regular payments, so you might want to set some aside for taxes next year. Good luck!

I had to wait FIVE WEEKS for my appeal decision and was checking my mailbox every day like a crazy person!!! I was convinced they lost my paperwork but finally got approved. The system is COMPLETELY BROKEN and they don't care that people are suffering while waiting!!! I almost lost my apartment because of their incompetence!!! Definitely call and bother them - the squeaky wheel gets the grease!!!

•Easy to say when YOU'RE not the one about to be HOMELESS because of their delays!!! They should hire more staff if they're understaffed - that's not OUR fault!!!

Just wanted to update you on something important - I checked with a colleague at the Appeals office. They're currently experiencing a major backlog specifically from hearings conducted in mid-to-late January (which includes yours). Apparently, they had some system upgrades that slowed down decision processing. They're working through them chronologically, so you should receive something within the next week. This delay is NOT related to whether your appeal will be approved or denied. Hope this helps ease your mind a bit.

Just wanted to check in - did you ever get your decision? I'm curious what happened with your case.

•Yes! I got it yesterday actually - I was APPROVED! The decision was dated from last week but took a while to show up in my dashboard. They're going to back-pay me for all the eligible weeks. Such a relief! Thanks to everyone for all the support and advice. You all helped keep me sane during the wait!

•Great news! Make sure you continue filing your weekly claims on time while waiting for the payment to process. The back pay should arrive within 2-3 business days.
