How long to get PA UC appeal hearing date after denial? Waiting anxiously with evidence
Just got denied for regular UC benefits after waiting 11 weeks for a determination! I'm seriously frustrated because I have solid documentation that proves I qualify. I submitted my appeal online last Tuesday, but now I'm stuck in another waiting game for a hearing date. For anyone who's gone through the appeal process recently in 2025, how long did it take to actually get your hearing scheduled? Also, any advice on preparing for the hearing or things I should avoid saying/doing? Really stressing about bills piling up while I wait...

I went through an appeal back in January. Took about 5 weeks to get my hearing date, then another 2 weeks until the actual hearing. Make sure all your evidence is organized chronologically and you have at least 3 copies of everything (one for you, referee, and employer). When you get the hearing notice, READ IT CAREFULLY - it will tell you exactly what issue they're deciding. Only address that specific issue during your testimony. Good luck!

•5 weeks?! Ugh that's so long... Did you get backpay for all that time once you won your appeal? Also did you have your hearing over the phone or in person?

The UC system is completely RIGGED against workers!!! I waited 8 weeks for a hearing date last fall and then they CANCELLED it the day before with no explanation!!! Had to wait another MONTH for the rescheduled date. Total circus!!!

•While delays can certainly be frustrating, appeal hearings get rescheduled typically when an important party can't attend or when additional evidence needs review. It's actually good they're thorough since these decisions impact eligibility. Did you eventually have your hearing?

•Your cousin got lucky with that timing! My neighbor's still waiting after 6 weeks. So unpredictable.

PA UC appeal timelines are currently averaging 4-6 weeks for scheduling, though some are faster. Here are my tips for success: 1. Review your determination letter carefully - it explains exactly why you were denied 2. Gather all documentation that specifically addresses that reason 3. Prepare a timeline of events to reference during your testimony 4. Practice explaining your case clearly and concisely 5. The hearing will likely be by phone unless you specifically request in-person 6. You have the right to question any witnesses including your employer 7. If you receive new evidence before the hearing, you can submit it to the referee If approved, you will receive all back benefits from the weeks you were eligible and filed claims.

•Thanks so much for the detailed response! That's really helpful. My determination letter says I was denied because they think I quit without cause, but I have emails showing they reduced my hours by over 60% which basically forced me out. Will that be enough evidence?

After waiting 3 weeks for my hearing date and getting nowhere trying to call the UC service center (constant busy signals!), I tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) and actually got through to a rep in under an hour. They confirmed my appeal was in the system and gave me an estimated timeframe. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. Worth it just to get some peace of mind while waiting.

I jus went thru this whole process! Got my hearing date after about 5 weeks, had the phone hearing last week. Make sure u file ur biweekly claims even while waiting!!! I almost forgot to do this and woulda lost all that money if my sister didnt remind me! Even tho ur denied u still gotta file every 2 weeks to get backpay if u win.

•Omg thank you for mentioning this! I didn't realize I needed to keep filing while waiting. Just did my biweekly claim now. Would have completely missed it.

If your case involves a significant reduction in hours, make sure to bring pay stubs showing your hours before and after the reduction. Also, any written communication where you raised concerns about the reduction to your employer will be extremely helpful. The referee will want to see that you made a good faith effort to resolve the situation before leaving. For a 60% reduction in hours, you have a strong case under the necessitous and compelling reason standard.

•This is exactly what happened to my brother last year - company cut his hours by half and tried to claim he quit voluntarily when he couldn't pay his bills anymore. He won his appeal with similar evidence.

•Yes, you should absolutely continue your work search activities while appealing! PA requires at least two work search activities per week. If you win your appeal, you'll need to have documented these activities to receive benefits for those weeks. Keep detailed records of all applications, interviews, etc.

Update for anyone who finds this thread later: Finally got my hearing notice today - took exactly 4 weeks and 2 days from when I filed my appeal. The hearing is scheduled for phone, but I'm going to request in-person since I have a lot of documentation to present. Thanks everyone for the advice! I'll post again after the hearing to let you know how it went.

•Great news! Remember you can also fax or upload your documentation in advance so the referee has it before the hearing. This is sometimes better than trying to explain documents over the phone. Good luck!

Wow, congrats on getting your hearing date Fatima! That timeline matches what I experienced - about 4 weeks. One thing I'd add is to make sure you have a quiet, private space for your phone hearing if you decide to stick with that option. I made the mistake of taking mine in a coffee shop and the background noise was really distracting. Also, speak slowly and clearly - the referee needs to take notes on everything you say. If you do go in-person, arrive at least 15 minutes early to get familiar with the room setup. Rooting for you!
