Will I see backpay on payment history after my NY unemployment claim ended?
I stopped filing for unemployment about 4 months ago after finding a new job. However, there was a period of 7 weeks where I was told I'd receive backpay for a processing delay they admitted was their fault. The agent I spoke with in July assured me the money would eventually be released, but I've checked my payment history several times and still nothing shows up. My concern is that since I'm no longer actively claiming, maybe the back payments won't appear in my regular payment history anymore? Has anyone received backpay after their claim was no longer active? Do I need to look somewhere else to see if they processed it? It's about $2,850 that I'm still owed and I honestly need that money to catch up on bills I fell behind on while waiting.

Yes, it absolutely should still show in your payment history regardless of whether you're actively claiming or not. That's literally the place where all payments get recorded. I'd recommend checking at least once a week. The system is frustratingly slow sometimes.

•Thanks! I've been checking weekly but it's been radio silence. Do you know how long backpay typically takes to process when the claim is already inactive?

•In my experience, it took about 8 weeks for backpay to show up after they said it was approved. But that was while my claim was still active. Might be different in your case 🤷♀️

After months of trying to reach someone about my backpay issue, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback from an actual agent within 2 hours! Worth every penny because talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast. They explained exactly why my backpay was held up and fixed it right then. Check out their explainer: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•100% worked for me! I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for weeks to get through. The callback came exactly as promised and the agent resolved my issue in one call.

•Yeah it's real! Been around for a while but not everyone knows about it. Discovered it through another reddit thread when I was at my wits end

•i dunno man, another day another company promising to fix unemployment problems lmao. what makes this any different?

•They don't claim to fix your unemployment issues - they just get you past the impossible hold times so you can talk to an actual agent who CAN fix your issues. That's the difference. You still need to explain your situation to the DOL agent.

You should definitely still see it in payment history! If it's been more than 2 months since they told you it'd be released, you need to call them. Thats what happened to me - they said it was coming but something got stuck in the system. One phone call fixed it but I had to actually talk to someone.

This is exactly why I document EVERYTHING. Get the name of anyone you talk to, the date, time, and what they promised. Then when you call back you can reference the previous call. Makes it harder for them to give you the runaround.

•I have the agent's first name and the date, but not much else. I was just so relieved someone was actually helping me that I didn't think to ask for an ID number or anything 😓

•Better than nothing! Just use what you have and be super confident when you talk to them - "On July 15th I spoke with Stephanie who confirmed my backpay of $2,850 would be processed."

I had the same situation last year and my backpay DID eventually show up in my payment history even though I wasn't claiming anymore. It took almost 3 months though when they initially told me 3-4 weeks. The NY unemployment system is a joke with these delays 🤦♂️

•THREE MONTHS? Omg I would lose my mind waiting that long for money they already admitted they owe me!

•Tell me about it! I called so many times but kept getting different answers. Eventually just had to wait it out. Hopefully OP gets theirs sooner.

I'm dealing with the EXACT same issue right now. claimed for 8 months, got a new job in march, still waiting on 5 weeks of backpay they approved in february. Every time I call its a different story about whats happening with it. Getting really frustrating.

You gotta call them like your life depends on it. My backpay only came through after I managed to get a tier 2 specialist on the phone. Regular agents kept giving me the runaround for months. Be prepared to wait on hold for hours tho.

•This ☝️ The regular agents dont have the authority to fix complex backpay issues. You need a specialist.

•how do u even ask for a specialist? whenever i call they just connect me to whoever

•You have to specifically request a tier 2 specialist. If they say no, politely end the call and try again with another agent. Some are more helpful than others.

Here's what I've learned after dealing with NY unemployment for way too long: Backpay issues are extremely common and frustratingly slow to resolve. Even when an agent says it's approved, it goes through several more review stages. Your payment WILL show up in payment history regardless of whether your claim is active or not. Here's what you should do: 1. Contact them again ASAP. The fact that it's been months since approval means something is probably hung up in the system. 2. When you call, be prepared with exact dates of the weeks you're owed, the name of the previous agent who helped you, and any confirmation numbers. 3. If you can't get through on the phone (which is likely), try using claimyr.com - it's a service that waits on hold for you and calls when an agent is available. Saved me countless hours and the agent I spoke with was able to see exactly what was holding up my payment. 4. If calling doesn't work, try the secure message system on your online account. Be very specific about your issue. Unfortunately, the backpay system is overwhelmed and things fall through the cracks all the time. You have to be persistent. The good news is that if they already acknowledged they owe you, you WILL get paid eventually - but only if you keep following up.

•Thank you so much for this detailed response! This is incredibly helpful. I'll definitely check out that service because the thought of sitting on hold for hours again makes me want to scream.

•claimyr literally saved my sanity during my UI nightmare last year. After 3+ weeks of trying to get through, I got a callback in under 2 hours!

•the secure message thing never worked for me. sent 5 messages and got generic responses every time 🙄

•Yeah the secure message is hit or miss, but it creates a paper trail which can be helpful later if you need to escalate the issue.

its crazy to me how they expect people to survive while they take MONTHS to pay what they owe. like we all just have thousands in savings to cover their mistakes??

•Honestly I think they hope ppl will just give up and not pursue what they're owed. Less money they have to pay out 😒

•This!!! They counted on people forgetting or giving up. Always fight for what you're owed!

Check ur bank account too. Sometimes the $ shows up there before it updates in the unemployment portal. Happened to me twice.

Contact your state representative about this! I had a similar issue that was dragging on for months. Emailed my state assembly person and suddenly my backpay appeared two weeks later. They have special contacts at DOL that can expedite things.

•Can confirm this works. My case was "under review" for 5 months until I reached out to my state senator's office. Magical how fast things got resolved after that! 💯

•This is a great idea! Do I just look up who my representative is and email them directly?

•Yep! Google "who is my NY state assembly member" and put in your address. Most have constituent services staff specifically for helping with government agency issues.

I worked for NYS (not unemployment but another agency) and I can tell you the systems are ancient and disconnected from each other. Your backpay is probably approved in one system but hasn't transferred to the payment system. Only a real live human can fix these issues by manually pushing it through.

Just a heads up, there's been some system maintenance and updates going on recently. My friend's backpay randomly appeared after 4 months of nothing, and customer service said it was because they finally finished updating some old claims after a system update.

whatever you do DON'T file a new claim thinking it will help! this will only complicate things further. stick with following up on your existing claim for the backpay.

•Thanks for the warning! I haven't tried to file a new claim since I'm employed now, but good to know that would make things worse.
