Will NY unemployment back pay appear in payment history after benefits end?

I finally got my claim issues sorted out and my NY unemployment examiner said they're going to release all my back pay from January to March 2025 (about 12 weeks worth). The thing is, my regular benefits just ended last week because I found a job. Would the back payment still show up in my payment history even though I'm no longer claiming weekly benefits? I'm worried I might miss it or that they won't release it now that my claim is inactive. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

Yes, your back pay will definitely still show in your payment history! The payment history doesn't disappear when your claim becomes inactive. Actually, NY unemployment payment records stay visible in your account for quite a while after your benefits end. When they process your back pay, you'll see separate entries for each week they're paying you for, with the dates of the actual covered weeks (not the payment dates). You'll also get an email notification when payments are released.

Oh thank god! That's such a relief to hear. Do you know approximately how long it takes for the back pay to show up after they say they're releasing it? The examiner wasn't very specific about timing.

same thing happened to me but i never got my backpay and now i cant get anyone on the phone. been almost a month :/

That's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did you try contacting them through the message center on the website?

The back pay WILL show up in your payment history BUT you need to keep checking your account regularly!!! My brother almost missed his because the notification email went to his spam folder. They don't send physical mail about this stuff anymore. Also make sure your direct deposit info is still correct in the system!!

Thanks for the heads up about the email notifications potentially going to spam. I'll make sure to check that folder too. My direct deposit info should still be correct since it hasn't been that long.

After my back pay was approved, it took about 9 business days to actually appear in my payment history and another 2-3 days to hit my bank account. This was back in February 2025. The system is definitely slow right now because of all the seasonal hiring/layoffs processing. If you need to check on status, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent quickly. I wasted days trying to call before using their service - they got me through to a live agent in under 10 minutes. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

is that service legit? seems weird to pay to talk to unemployment when its supposed to be free

To directly answer your question: Yes, the back pay will appear in your payment history regardless of your current claim status. The payment history maintains all transactions related to your claim, even after the claim becomes inactive. However, there are a few important points to be aware of: 1. Processing times for back pay can vary widely. The current average is 7-14 business days, but it can take longer depending on the complexity of your claim. 2. Each week of back pay will appear as a separate entry in your payment history, labeled with the week ending date it covers. 3. You'll receive a "Determination of Back Pay" notice in your online message center about 1-2 days before the payments begin processing. 4. If your direct deposit information has changed since your claim was active, you need to update it immediately, even if your claim shows as inactive. 5. Back pay is sometimes released in batches rather than all at once, particularly if it covers a large time period. If more than 3 weeks pass without any back pay appearing in your payment history, you should contact NYSDOL for a status update.

Thank you SO MUCH for this detailed information! This is exactly what I needed to know. I'll keep an eye out for that "Determination of Back Pay" notice in my message center. My back pay covers about 12 weeks, so it might come in batches like you mentioned.

This is actually not accurate advice. You should always confirm payments are showing in your payment history BEFORE expecting them in your bank account. The DOL payment history always updates before the bank deposit occurs. If money appears in your account without showing in your payment history, that could indicate a potential error that might require repayment later.

I work with unemployment cases regularly, and I can clarify how this process works: Your back pay entitlement is established at the time it's approved, regardless of whether your claim is now inactive. The payment will definitely show in your payment history, and the system is designed to process approved back payments even for claims that are no longer active. That said, there are occasional administrative delays. The standard timeframe for back pay processing after approval is: - 2-3 business days for the determination to be processed internally - 1-2 business days for the payment to be authorized - 1-3 business days for the payment to appear in your payment history - 1-3 additional business days for the funds to reach your bank account If you received verbal confirmation from your examiner but don't see any activity in your account after two weeks, I'd recommend following up. The determination should generate an automated notice in your online message center when it's officially processed. One important note: Make sure your direct deposit information is still active and correct in your profile, even though you're no longer filing weekly claims.

Is this still true if the claim is COMPLETELY closed not just inactive?? My friend had her claim fully closed (not sure why) and they told her she has to REOPEN it to get her backpay which makes NO SENSE!!

There's an important distinction between "inactive" and "closed" claims. A claim becomes inactive when you stop certifying weekly but remains open for its benefit year. A claim is officially closed when the benefit year ends or when it's manually closed by DOL. If the claim is completely closed, then yes, unfortunately it often needs to be reopened through a specific process to release authorized back pay. This is due to system limitations in the NYSDOL payment processing system.

Update: Just wanted to let everyone know that my back pay started showing up in my payment history today! It's been exactly 8 business days since the examiner told me it would be released. They're doing it in batches like someone mentioned - so far 4 weeks have posted, with "BACK PAY" listed next to each entry. Hopefully the rest will show up in the next few days. Thanks everyone for your help!!

That's great news! Thanks for coming back to update us. It's really helpful for others to see how long the process actually took in your case.

So glad to hear you got your back pay sorted out! I went through something similar last year - had about 10 weeks of back pay approved after my benefits had already ended when I started a new job. The payments definitely still went through and showed up in my payment history exactly like everyone else is saying. One thing I wish someone had told me: even though you're not filing weekly anymore, keep logging into your account at least once a week to check for updates. I almost missed an important message from DOL that required a response within 10 days. Also, if you have the mobile app, the notifications are pretty reliable for payment updates. Your examiner saying they're releasing it is a really good sign - that usually means all the paperwork is done and it's just a matter of processing time now. Fingers crossed yours comes through as smoothly as it sounds like it will!

Thank you for sharing your experience! That's a great tip about continuing to log in weekly even after benefits end. I definitely don't want to miss any important messages from DOL. I'll make sure to keep checking regularly. It's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same situation with a successful outcome!

Just wanted to add my experience for anyone else in this situation - I had a similar issue where my back pay was approved after my claim ended. The key thing is that once it's approved by an examiner, it WILL get processed even if your claim is inactive. Mine took about 2 weeks to show up in payment history, and like others mentioned, it came in batches over a few days. One thing that helped me stay on top of it was setting up text notifications in my NY.gov account settings - I got alerts whenever there was activity on my unemployment account. Also, don't panic if it takes longer than expected - the system has been slower lately due to high volume, but approved back pay does eventually get processed. The payment history will definitely show everything even after your claim ends!

Thanks for mentioning the text notifications! I just went and enabled those in my account settings. It's really helpful to hear from so many people who've been through this exact situation. The consistency in everyone's experiences (back pay showing up even after claims end, processing in batches, taking 1-2 weeks) is really reassuring. I feel much more confident now that everything will work out properly.

I had a very similar situation last year! My back pay was approved about 3 weeks after my benefits ended when I got a new job. The good news is that yes, it absolutely will show up in your payment history even though your claim is inactive. In my case, it took about 10 business days from when the examiner said it was approved to when I started seeing the payments appear. Like others mentioned, mine came in batches - I think they process them in groups of 4-6 weeks at a time. Each payment showed up as a separate line item with "BACK PAY" clearly labeled and the week ending date it covered. The most important thing is to keep your contact info and direct deposit details current in your account, even though you're not actively claiming. I'd also recommend checking your account every few days rather than waiting for email notifications, since those can sometimes be delayed. You've got this - sounds like your examiner has everything sorted out on their end!
