When will my ny unemployment benefits actually end if I still have weeks left?

My benefit year officially ended on August 9th, 2022, but when I checked my account yesterday, it still shows I have 48 days of benefits remaining. Not sure if I can continue claiming or if I need to file a new claim? The website is confusing and nobody answers the phone. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? The last time I certified was this past Sunday and I got paid, but I'm worried my next payment might get rejected since my benefit year technically ended.

You need to file a new claim. When your benefit year ends, you have to reapply regardless of how many days you have left. The system just doesn't automatically remove those days from your account display - it's a glitch that confuses EVERYONE. I tried to continue claiming after my BYE date and got a message saying my benefits were on hold.

Thanks! Did you have to wait long for the new claim to process? I'm worried about a gap in payments...

It took about 3 weeks for mine to process, but I've heard others get approved faster. Definitely reapply ASAP though.

This is correct. Benefit Year End means exactly that - END. The system showing remaining days is just poor programming by NY unemployment. šŸ™„

After struggling with the same exact issue, I tried calling for TWO WEEKS straight with no luck. Then I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback with an actual agent! Saved me from the endless phone tree hell. The agent confirmed I needed to file a new claim and helped me do it right there on the call. Best money I ever spent to get this resolved - talking to an agent got my payments back on track in days instead of weeks. Check out their explainer here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds like some kinda scam tbh... does this actually work?

Not a scam at all. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after weeks of trying. They literally just wait on hold for you and then call you when they get an actual human. Got my issue resolved in one call.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've tried calling 50+ times already and just get disconnected šŸ¤¬

Yeah it works. They call continuously until they get through, then connect you when there's a real person. Beats spending your whole day redialing.

I used them last month and it worked. Got a call back in about 2 hours. My brother waited 3 days on his own and never got through.

I was in the same boat - had like 59 days left but my BYE was in May. Called and the rep told me I HAD to file a new claim. Did that, and had to wait about 10 days for it to process, but then I got retroactive payments for the weeks I missed. Don't wait!

You 100% need to file a new claim ASAP!! The system is stupid af and shows remaining days even after your benefit year ends. If you try to certify with those remaining days after your BYE date, you'll get stuck in limbo and potentially trigger a fraud investigation (happened to my roommate). File new claim now and save yourself the headache šŸ‘

Oh god, really? A fraud investigation?? That's the last thing I need right now!

Yeah its ridiculous but thats how their system works. My roommate had to wait 2 months to get it sorted out. Just file a new claim and youll be fine.

Everyone is giving you different info bc the NY unemployment system is inconsistent AF. I had the exact problem back in February. When I called after 80+ attempts, one rep told me to keep claiming, another told me to refile. What worked for me was filing a new claim, but continuing to certify on my old claim until the new one was approved. That way I didn't miss any payments.

This is actually clever. Did you have to pay anything back later?

0 coins

Zainab Ibrahim

Nope! They just transitioned me to the new claim once it was approved. The weeks I certified under the old claim after BYE date still counted.

The NYSDOL website is so outdated and confusing! šŸ˜¤ I work at a community legal aid office and help people with unemployment issues. Here's what you need to know: ā€¢ When your benefit year ends, you MUST file a new claim even if you have days remaining ā€¢ Your benefit amount may change based on your work history in the past 18 months ā€¢ Continue to certify weekly while your new claim processes ā€¢ If your new claim is denied but you still have days on your old claim, you may be able to get an extension (rare but possible) ā€¢ The fastest way to resolve issues is to speak directly with an agent For anyone struggling to reach someone by phone, I recommend using Claimyr.com - many of our clients have had success with it. It's a service that waits on hold for you and connects you when a live agent is on the line. Feel free to ask any questions!

Thanks for this detailed info! Do you know if there's any way to expedite the new claim process? I've got bills coming up šŸ˜¬

Unfortunately no reliable way to expedite besides calling and asking. Sometimes contacting your state representative can help if you're waiting more than 3 weeks.

This should be pinned at the top! Clear and helpful unlike most of the contradictory info out there.

Not extending those remaining days past your BYE date is literally the dumbest design flaw in the whole system. Why show days if you can't use them??? šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø I went through this last year and spent 4 hrs on hold only to be told I needed a new claim.

The whole NY unemployment system is designed to confuse people so they give up and don't collect benefits they're entitled to. CHANGE MY MIND.

FACTS. My cousin works for the state (not unemployment) and even she says the system is intentionally confusing.

Exact Same thing hapend to me!!!! file a new claim and KEEP CERTIFYING in the meantime. They eventually backpaid me for the weeks during the transition but it took like 3 weeks to process the new claim bc theyre so freakin slow

From personal experience: Just because you have days left doesn't mean you'll get an extension. Your benefit year is exactly that - one year. After that you need a new claim. The fact that they don't make this clear anywhere on the website is criminal.

If your benefit year ends, those 'remaining days' don't matter. I ignored this advice and kept certifying. Ended up with a huge mess and had to repay 3 weeks of benefits because they considered it fraudulent even though THEIR SYSTEM let me certify! Don't be me! File a new claim immediately!

Liam O'Sullivan

That's terrifying! Did they send you a letter first or just start demanding money back?

Got a letter saying I had an overpayment, then had to spend 2 weeks trying to reach someone to sort it out. Nightmare.

Plot twist: the 48 days you have left are a mirage. The system is trolling you. File a new claim or face the wrath of NYSDOL's passive-aggressive automated letters of doom.

Has anyone actually gotten through to a human being at ny unemployment recently? I feel like I'm trying to call into a radio contest or something... just constant busy signals and disconnects.
