NY unemployment effective days ran out but benefit year ends in 2023 - can I still claim weekly?

I just got the message that my effective days remaining is at zero, but my benefit year ending date isn't until December 2025. Does this mean I'm completely out of benefits? Can I (or should I) keep certifying every week until my benefit year officially ends even though I won't get paid? I'm confused because the system still lets me certify. Will doing this help if they add any extensions later? Or am I just wasting my time?

When ur effective days are gone, ur benefits are gone. Period. Doesn't matter when ur benefit year ends. That's just the window u had to USE the weeks, not a guarantee of weeks.

This is exactly right. Your effective days are your actual benefits. The benefit year is just the timeframe you have to use those days. Once your effective days reach zero, there's nothing left, regardless of when your benefit year ends.

You've exhausted your maximum 26 weeks of regular UI benefits (which equals 104 effective days in NY). Even though your benefit year continues until December 2025, you've used all available benefits under standard unemployment. However, I would recommend continuing to certify weekly for two reasons: 1. If NY creates any new extensions (though currently none exist), having continuous certification will make transition smoother 2. It keeps you in the habit of job searching and documenting your work search activities Just understand you won't receive payments unless something changes with state or federal policy.

Do this ☝️ Plus u never kno what might happen. During covid they kept extending things and people who kept certifying got backpay without having to fight for it.

Thank you! I'll keep certifying then. This makes sense. Is there any chance that the state will add extended benefits this year? My industry is really still struggling.

When your effective days run out, benefits stop, but you might qualify for other programs. Consider applying for: - SNAP (food assistance) - HEAP (heating assistance) - Medicaid Each has different eligibility requirements. Visit myBenefits.ny.gov to see what you might qualify for.

Thank you, I'll look into these programs. I've never applied for any of them before.

I had the EXACT same situation last year!!! My days ran out in March but my benefit year wasn't until November 2025. I kept certifying every week for TWO MONTHS and nothing happened!! Complete waste of time. The system just said $0.00 every week. I got so frustrated I stopped, but then I couldn't get through to anyone on the phone to ask if I should keep going. The system is TERRIBLE.

I agree that they make everything so damn confusing. The NY unemployment system is designed to be difficult on purpose. They want people to give up.

For anyone in this situation who needs to speak with a UI agent about extended benefits or next steps: I was struggling to get through on the phones too. I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a NYSDOL agent within 20 minutes after I spent days trying. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE I used it when my benefits ran out to ask about extensions, and while there weren't any available, the agent was able to tell me about other programs I qualified for based on my specific situation.

does that thing really work? sounds sketchy

Yes, it actually does work. I was skeptical too, but it saved me from spending hours on redial. They basically navigate the phone system for you and call you when they have an agent on the line.

To clarify about the benefit year vs. effective days confusion: NY unemployment provides up to 26 weeks (104 effective days) of benefits within a 52-week benefit year. When you run out of effective days, your benefits end regardless of when your benefit year ends. Currently, there are no active extended benefit programs in NY unemployment. These only trigger during periods of high unemployment or through special federal legislation. You can keep certifying after benefits exhaust, but there's no guarantee of retroactive payment if extensions become available later. It's a personal choice whether the potential future benefit outweighs the weekly time commitment.

Thank you for explaining this so clearly. I think I'll certify for a few more weeks and then reassess based on my job search progress.

ya ur not getting anymore money lol benefit year is just a technical thing. sorry ur out of luck unless u can find a job fast or they make changes

I'd recommend keeping up with your certifications even after exhausting benefits. While there are no active extensions now, the labor market is changing rapidly and legislative responses could follow. Maintaining your claim keeps your work search documentation current and positions you favorably if any extensions are implemented. Also, depending on your circumstances, you might want to check if you qualify for other types of unemployment like Trade Adjustment Assistance (if your job was affected by foreign imports) or training benefits through the NYSDOL.

I hadn't thought about the Trade Adjustment Assistance. I work in manufacturing so that might actually apply. How would I find out if my company qualifies?

To check if your company has a TAA certification, visit the NYSDOL website and search their database of certified companies. You can also call their office directly. If your company isn't listed but you believe foreign trade impacted your job loss, you or your former employer can petition for certification. The process takes time but can provide significant extended benefits including training funds if approved.

I'm in a similar boat - my effective days just hit zero last week but my benefit year doesn't end until October 2025. I've been reading through everyone's advice here and I think I'm going to keep certifying for at least another month or two. Even if there's only a small chance of extensions, the 10 minutes a week seems worth it compared to potentially missing out on backpay if something does get passed. Plus it keeps me accountable for my job search activities. Has anyone heard any rumors about potential state extensions being discussed in Albany?

0 coins

I haven't heard any concrete rumors about extensions in Albany, but I think your approach makes sense. I'm also planning to keep certifying for a while - it really does only take a few minutes each week and like you said, it keeps the job search routine going. The way I see it, if nothing happens in the next couple months, I can always stop then. But if something does get passed, at least we'll be in the system already. Good luck with your job search!

I'm new to this community but going through the exact same situation right now. My effective days just ran out this week but my benefit year doesn't end until August 2025. Reading through everyone's responses here has been really helpful - I was so confused about the difference between effective days and benefit year ending. I think I'm going to follow the advice about continuing to certify weekly for now. Even if there's no guarantee of extensions, it seems like the small time investment is worth the potential upside. Has anyone had success with any of the other programs mentioned like SNAP or HEAP while job searching? I've never applied for assistance before but my savings are running low.

Welcome to the community! I applied for SNAP about 6 months ago when I was between jobs and it was actually much easier than I expected. The online application through myBenefits.ny.gov is pretty straightforward and they processed mine within about 2 weeks. For HEAP, the income limits are pretty generous and they help with both heating and cooling costs. I'd definitely recommend applying for both - there's no shame in using the safety net programs when you need them, that's exactly what they're there for. The SNAP benefits especially helped me stretch my grocery budget while job hunting. Good luck with your search and definitely keep certifying weekly like everyone's suggesting!

I just went through this exact situation a few months ago and wanted to share what I learned. Like everyone else said, once your effective days hit zero, you won't get any more payments regardless of when your benefit year ends. But I did keep certifying weekly for about 6 weeks after my benefits ran out, and here's why it was worth it: 1. It kept me disciplined about my job search - having to document 3 work search activities every week really helped me stay focused 2. I discovered some job training programs through the NYSDOL website that I wouldn't have found otherwise 3. Even though no extensions materialized, I felt better knowing I was still "in the system" just in case The whole process only takes about 5-10 minutes each week, so it's not a huge time commitment. I eventually stopped after about 6 weeks when I got a new job, but I'm glad I kept it up during that transition period. Also, definitely look into those other assistance programs people mentioned - I qualified for SNAP and it really helped during those lean weeks. The myBenefits.ny.gov site makes it pretty easy to see what you might be eligible for.

Thanks for sharing your experience! This is really reassuring to hear from someone who actually went through this recently. The point about job training programs is interesting - I hadn't thought to look for those on the NYSDOL site. I'm definitely going to keep certifying for now based on everyone's advice here. It sounds like even if there's no direct financial benefit, there are still some indirect advantages that make it worthwhile. Did you find the job training programs helpful, or did you end up finding work before using them?

I'm going through this exact same situation right now - just got the zero effective days message yesterday but my benefit year doesn't end until November 2025. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful in understanding the difference between effective days and benefit year. I think I'm going to follow the advice about continuing to certify weekly, especially after seeing people's experiences about how it keeps you accountable for job searching and positions you better if any extensions do happen. I'm also going to look into those other assistance programs mentioned - I've been hesitant to apply for things like SNAP but my unemployment savings are getting pretty thin. Has anyone had experience with the job training programs through NYSDOL that were mentioned? I'm in retail management but thinking I might need to pivot to a different field given how my industry has been struggling.

Hey Freya! I'm actually in a really similar situation - my effective days ran out about a month ago and I've been certifying weekly since then based on the advice from this community. I can definitely relate to the hesitation about applying for assistance programs, but honestly it's been a lifesaver. I applied for SNAP through the myBenefits.ny.gov site and it was much less intimidating than I thought it would be. The application process was straightforward and they approved me within about 10 days. It's really helped stretch my grocery budget while I'm job hunting. As for the job training programs, I looked into a few through the NYSDOL site and there are some good options for career pivots. They have programs for things like healthcare, IT, and skilled trades that might be worth exploring given the retail challenges you mentioned. The key thing I've learned is to not be too proud to use these safety net programs - that's exactly what they're designed for. Keep your head up and definitely keep certifying weekly!

I'm dealing with this same issue right now - my effective days just hit zero last week but my benefit year runs until January 2026. After reading through everyone's experiences here, I'm definitely going to keep certifying weekly for at least the next couple months. The way I see it, even if there's only a 10% chance of extensions being passed, the few minutes each week is worth the potential backpay. Plus several people mentioned how it helps keep you disciplined with job searching, which I definitely need right now. I'm also going to look into applying for SNAP and HEAP - I've been putting it off but hearing how straightforward the process was for others makes me feel more confident about it. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences, especially those who went through this recently. It's really helpful to get practical advice from people who actually dealt with this situation rather than just guessing what might happen.

I'm in almost the exact same boat - my effective days ran out about 2 weeks ago but my benefit year doesn't end until March 2026. I was so confused initially about why I could still certify if my benefits were done, but this thread has really cleared things up for me. I've been certifying weekly since reading everyone's advice here and you're absolutely right that it only takes a few minutes but could potentially pay off big if any extensions get passed. I also finally bit the bullet and applied for SNAP last week after reading how positive everyone's experiences were - honestly wish I had done it sooner because the process really was much easier than I expected. The financial stress of job hunting is real, so don't hesitate to use those programs. We pay into these systems for exactly these situations. Keeping my fingers crossed that we all find something soon, but at least we're all staying prepared just in case anything changes on the benefits front!
