NY unemployment benefits stopped claiming option disappeared after BYE date confusion
I'm freaking out right now! My benefit year ending (BYE) date isn't until February 2025, but when I logged in yesterday, my Effective Date suddenly shows as 0. I was specifically told by a rep last week to keep claiming weekly, but now the system doesn't even give me the OPTION to certify! When I call the automated line, it only lets me hear my payment status - no option to claim benefits. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm trying to get through to an agent right now and will update what they tell me... if I can ever reach someone! This is so frustrating when you're counting on that money for bills.

This happened to me in January. The system glitched after a site maintenance and wiped my effective date. You need to speak with a Tier 2 specialist who can reset your claim in the system. Regular agents can't help with this specific issue - they'll just tell you to wait or reapply (which you shouldn't do if your BYE date is still valid).

•Thanks for responding! I've been on hold forever trying to reach anyone. How long did it take to fix your issue? Should I just file a new claim? I'm so confused about what to do next.

Same exact thing just happened to my girlfriend last week!! The online system is totally broken right now. She got through after calling like 50 times and they told her it was a "data migration error" whatever that means. Keep trying to call.

•Data migration error?? That's ridiculous! Did they fix it right away once she got through? I've been trying all morning and can't get past the automated system.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I was worried about happening! I definitely won't file a new claim now. Thanks for the warning!

I dealt with this exact issue last month. This is happening because the NYSDOL just migrated to a new claims processing system in January 2025, and there are widespread glitches affecting people whose claims started before the migration. You need to: 1. Don't file a new claim - this will only complicate things 2. Request a callback through your online account (go to Messages > Compose New) 3. Take screenshots of your BYE date and the error 4. Keep detailed notes of who you speak with Unfortunately, the regular phone representatives often don't have access to fix these system issues. You need to speak with a claims specialist who has backend access to the database.

•Thank you so much for these detailed steps! I just sent a message through the portal as you suggested. Do you know how long it usually takes to get a callback? I'm getting really worried about making rent next week.

The callbacks take FOREVER. I waited 9 days for them to call me back about a similar issue. If you need this fixed fast I'd recommend just calling repeatedly until you get through. That's what worked for me.

•You're right that callbacks can be delayed right now. One thing that might help is specifying in your message that this is an urgent financial hardship situation. Make sure to mention specific bills that will be missed. They sometimes prioritize those cases.

I ran into this same situation in February and found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual person at NYSDOL without waiting for days. It was the only way I could get my issue fixed quickly. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Basically they hold your place in line and call you when they have an agent on the phone. Saved me from missing my car payment while waiting for benefits to restart.

•Has anyone else used this? Sounds too good to be true lol. I'm skeptical of anything that claims to help with unemployment calls.

•I used it last month when my payments stopped for no reason. It actually works! Got through to an agent in about 45 minutes when I had been trying for 3 days on my own with no luck. Worth every penny when you're desperate to get your benefits fixed.

the whole system is broken since they updated it. my freind had to go to his assemblymans office to get help after trying for 2 weeks to reach someone!!! maybe try that??

•This is actually good advice. State representatives' offices have dedicated contacts at NYSDOL that can help resolve issues much faster than going through normal channels. Just Google "[your county] NY state assembly member" and call their constituent services office.

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone after using Claimyr (thanks for the recommendation). The rep confirmed it was a system error from their recent update. Apparently when they migrated data, some accounts with remaining balances but approaching their BYE date got flagged incorrectly. She was able to reactivate my claiming ability on the spot! I can certify again starting Sunday. Such a relief! For anyone else experiencing this - definitely mention the "data migration error" specifically when you get through.

•Great news! I'm glad you got it resolved. This is exactly why it's important to be persistent with these system errors. For others reading this thread - make sure to take detailed notes of your conversation including the representative's ID number if they provide one. It helps if you need to reference the call later.

•Awesome! Thanks for updating us. I'm gonna tell my girlfriend to try that service too since she's still having issues.

One more update: I got my back payments today! They came through as a lump sum for the two weeks I missed. If anyone else is dealing with this issue, don't lose hope. Keep trying to reach someone who can help, and definitely be specific about the "effective date showing as 0" and "data migration error" - those were the keywords that helped the rep immediately understand my problem.

•This is why I love this forum - real solutions from real people. Thanks for coming back to share what worked. Too often people get help and disappear without telling others how they resolved their issue.
