NY unemployment BYE date passed but system says I can't file new claim - still paid once?
My Benefit Year End (BYE) date was on 2/21/2025. When I certified that week, the system prompted me to go to a link for more info. I followed the instructions and clicked 'file new claim' and completed ID.me verification. When I went back and continued the process, at the end it said 'you cannot file a new claim, you already have a claim on file.' \n\nStrangely, I got paid the following week so I thought everything was okay? But when I certified again this week, I got the same message, and today I don't see any released funds in my account. It's practically impossible to get through on the phone, so I'm wondering if anyone knows what I might be missing or should have done differently.\n\nI did speak with a representative before my BYE date who assured me I would definitely be eligible to receive benefits after filing a new claim, but I'm not sure if my claim is pending or if I did something wrong. Thank you for any help! 🙏

The same exact thing happend to me last month!!! The system is so glitchy rn. Try loggin out and clearing your browser cache or use a different device. Sometimes the NYSDOL website gets stuck in a weird loop. I think you need to call them tbh

I tried logging out and using my phone instead of my laptop but got the same message. 😫 Did you end up having to call? How long did it take you to get through?

This is a common issue in 2025 with the BYE process. What's happening is that the system is trying to process both your existing claim and your BYE renewal simultaneously. The one payment you received was likely the remaining balance from your previous benefit year.\n\nYou need to do the following:\n1. Continue certifying weekly even if you don't see payments\n2. Check your message inbox on the NY unemployment portal for any notices\n3. Look for a monetary determination letter - this would indicate your new claim is processing\n4. Check if your payment history shows your claim as \

Thank you for explaining! I checked my inbox and don't see any new notices or monetary determination letters. My payment history just shows the last payment from last week and nothing for this week. I'll keep certifying and hope it resolves itself. Is there anything else I should be checking for?

When this happened to me I just kept hitting refresh and trying again for literally like an hour and eventually it let me file a new claim properly. The NYSDOL website is totally broken half the time. So annoying!!

I'll try that again tonight. How long ago did this happen to you? Did your benefits continue without any gaps once you managed to file?

This is incorrect information. After a BYE date, you specifically need to file a new claim (not an additional claim) if you've worked and earned wages during your previous benefit year. An additional claim is for when you've stopped claiming for a few weeks but are still within your benefit year.

I went through this EXACT situation last month and it was a NIGHTMARE. The system kept giving me contradicting messages - telling me to file a new claim then saying I couldn't file a new claim. I tried for TWO WEEKS to get through on the phones and kept getting disconnected or waiting for hours. \n\nThe problem is that there's a glitch in the system that doesn't properly recognize when your BYE date hits and sometimes it tries to automatically extend your claim when it should be processing a new one. That one payment you got was probably just leftover from your old claim.\n\nYOU NEED TO TALK TO A HUMAN. There's no way around it. The system is broken and only an agent can fix this.

Oh no, that sounds awful! Did you ever manage to get through to someone? How long were you without benefits during this process?

It took me almost 3 weeks to finally talk to someone! I called EVERY DAY, sometimes 20+ times. They finally fixed it and backpaid me, but it was so stressful. They said this happens ALL THE TIME with the BYE date process.

3 weeks?! I can't go that long without payment... this is so frustrating. I've already called about 15 times today with no luck.

After struggling with this exact issue, I finally found a solution through Claimyr.com. It's a service that helps you get through to an actual unemployment agent without spending hours on hold. I was skeptical at first, but they got me connected to a rep in about 20 minutes, and the agent fixed my BYE date issue immediately. My payments resumed the following week with backpay.\n\nThey have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE\n\nTrust me, with these BYE date glitches, you need to speak to an actual human at NYSDOL. The online system just creates loops sometimes.

Does this actually work? The NY unemployment line is literally impossible to get thru

Yes, it worked for me last month. Much better than spending days trying to get through. The agent I spoke with said this BYE date issue is really common and takes like 5 minutes for them to fix on their end.

Thank you for suggesting this! I'm getting desperate after trying to call all morning. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get this fixed.

Did your old claim still have money left on it? sometimes if you had a balance remaining they will just extend your old claim instead of making you file a completely new one. That would explain why you got paid once but then it stopped. the extension might have run out

I think I did have some balance left, which would explain that one payment. But the rep I spoke with before my BYE definitely said I'd qualify for a new claim period since I worked part-time for several months during my previous benefit year.

This is a good observation. The system sometimes automatically pays the remaining balance from the previous benefit year, but there should be a transition to the new benefit year if you qualify. Because you worked during your benefit year, you should receive a monetary determination for your new benefit year. Since you haven't received that yet, there's likely a processing issue that needs agent intervention.

That makes sense. I guess I really do need to get through to someone on the phone.

Update on my situation - I FINALLY got it fixed! Called in the morning around 7:58am (right before they open at 8) and somehow got through to a human after about 45 minutes. The agent said it was a common error in their system where the BYE renewal wasn't properly triggering. She fixed it on her end and my payments should resume next week. \n\nShe also mentioned they're swamped with these exact issues right now because the system update in January 2025 created a bunch of glitches with BYE date processing. Good luck!

I want to clarify something important: Make sure you continue certifying every week while you're trying to resolve this. As long as you properly certify, you'll be eligible for backpay once the issue is resolved. If you miss certifying for any week, it becomes much more complicated to get those payments later.\n\nAlso, check if your online account shows your claim as \

Thank you for this reminder! I'll make sure to keep certifying. My claim doesn't show as \

The status would typically appear in your payment history section when you view your claim details. Since you don't see that status, it further indicates the system hasn't properly initiated your BYE review process. This definitely requires agent intervention at this point.

I've been trying that Claimyr service someone mentioned above - waiting to get connected. Really hope I can get this sorted soon!

UPDATE: I got through to a representative! Used the Claimyr service that was recommended here and got connected in about 30 minutes. The agent confirmed exactly what many of you said - my BYE renewal wasn't processing correctly because of a system glitch. \n\nShe manually processed my new benefit year, and I should receive back payments within 3 business days. She also said this is happening to a lot of people right now because of a system update they did in January.\n\nThank you everyone for your help and suggestions! I'll post another update once the payments actually hit my account.

SO glad you got it fixed! The exact same thing happened to me. The system is completely broken when it comes to BYE dates.
