Can't file new claim after BYE date in NY unemployment system - help?
My benefit year just ended in April 2023 and I was told I would need to file a new claim. I got some extra weeks added on to my previous claim, but now I can't find any option to file a new claim in the system. When I log in to my account, there's no button or link anywhere to start a new application. I've tried looking through all the menus and even tried on different browsers. Has anyone else run into this issue? Do I need to wait until my extension completely runs out? My last payment is coming next week and I'm getting worried about a gap in benefits.

The same thing happened to me! My BYE date was in February and they gave me an extension till May. When I tried to file a new claim last week, the option just wasn't there. I had to call them and wait on hold for 2 hours before someone finally helped me file over the phone. Their website is such garbage 🤮

•How long did it take for your claim to get processed after you filed by phone? I'm worried about missing payments.

•2 hours?! You got lucky. I was on hold for almost 5 hours last month trying to get through to someone 💀

I found a solution that actually worked for me! After struggling for days trying to reach ny unemployment, I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me a callback with an actual agent. I explained my situation about not being able to file a new claim after my BYE date and they fixed it right on the spot. talking to an agent got my benefits unlocked so fast! Check out this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this for real? Sounds too good to be true tbh

•Yeah it's 100% real. I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to call for 3 weeks straight with no luck. The callback came within a couple hours and the agent was able to fix my issue immediately.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've been burned by so many unemployment 'hacks' before...

•I totally get the skepticism. I felt the same way. But it seriously worked for me when nothing else did. The agent I spoke with said they're getting tons of calls about this exact BYE date issue.

•I mean, believe what you want 🤷♀️ But when you've been trying to call for weeks and getting nowhere, it's worth a shot. They don't fix the system, they just get you through to a real person who can help.

This is a technical glitch in their system that happens sometimes. You have two options: 1) Call them directly (good luck - you'll be on hold forever) 2) Try using an incognito browser window - sometimes the cache in your browser is causing the issue 3) Wait until your extension fully expires - the system will often update automatically after your last payment processes Whatever you do, don't miss filing for more than a week or you might have to start the whole process over again.

•Tried the incognito window thing and it didn't work. Guess I'll have to call them 😩

•Sorry that didn't work. The phone system is brutal these days with all the people trying to get through. Try calling right when they open - sometimes that's a bit faster.

It's actually a known issue with the NY unemployment system right now. After your BYE date, the website sometimes doesn't automatically update to show the new claim option. My friend who works at NYSDOL said they're working on fixing it, but it might take a few weeks. Your best bet is to call them directly.

According to the handbook, you're supposed to get a notification to file a new claim 2-3 weeks before your BYE date. Did you receive any messages or emails about this? Check your spam folder or your message center on the website. If you didn't get anything, that could be part of the problem.

•I just checked and don't see anything in my messages or email. Going to try calling tomorrow morning.

I highly recommend getting in touch with a real person at NYSDOL to solve this. The website has been particularly glitchy with BYE dates since they updated the system in March. After struggling to get through on the phones for weeks, I finally used Claimyr.com which got me connected to an agent through a callback. It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly. The agent I spoke with was able to file my new claim over the phone and get everything sorted out in one call.

•not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work 🤦♂️

•No hack, just a service that calls for you and stays on hold so you don't have to. When they get a human, they connect you. Saved me days of frustration.

•I used this too! Weird how it's not more well known considering how impossible it is to reach someone at unemployment

Check if you've worked enough during your previous benefit year to qualify for a new claim. If you haven't worked enough quarters, sometimes the system won't give you the option to file a new claim because you wouldn't be eligible anyway.

•I worked full-time for 6 months during my benefit year before being laid off again, so I should definitely qualify. Good point though!

The same thing happened to me last month!! I was missing the option to file a new claim after my BYE date. Apparently it happens a lot because their system has bugs. You need to talk to an actual person to get it fixed. I spent DAYS trying to get through on the phone with no luck.

•Did you eventually get it resolved? How long did it take?

•Yeah I ended up using claimyr.com after someone on here recommended it - got connected to an agent who fixed it that same day. Before that I was calling for weeks with no luck

Maybe this is a stupid question, but have you tried logging out and back in again? Sometimes the NY unemployment site doesn't refresh properly, especially after maintenance periods.

•Yep, tried that multiple times and even cleared my browser cache. Still no option to file a new claim showing up anywhere.

This happened to my wife and it turned out there was a flag on her account because she had accidentally answered a certification question wrong a few weeks earlier. They never notified her about it. Once she got through to someone, they removed the flag and the option appeared. Might be worth checking if there are any issues with your previous certifications.

One quick thing to check - are you using the mobile site or the desktop version? Sometimes the mobile version doesn't show all the options. Try using a desktop computer if you've been trying on your phone.

•I've tried both mobile and desktop - same issue on both unfortunately 😔

•Ugh that's frustrating! Their website is the absolute worst. Calling is probably your only option then.

honestly their website is hot garbage. i've never seen a more broken system in my life. you HAVE to call them, there's no way around it. good luck getting through tho, i had to redial like 50+ times before i didn't get the busy signal 🤡

Whatever you do, DO NOT just stop certifying because you can't file a new claim! Keep certifying every week even on your old claim. If there's any gap in your certifications it can cause major problems when they eventually sort it out.

•Thanks for this advice! I'll definitely keep certifying until I can get this resolved.

I was in your exact situation last month! When I finally got through to someone (using claimyr.com after regular calling failed for two weeks), they explained that there's a specific process for transitioning between benefit years. Sometimes the system doesn't automatically generate the option to file a new claim if certain conditions are met. The agent was able to override this and help me file a new claim over the phone. Don't wait - the sooner you talk to someone, the less likely you'll have a gap in payments.

•sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this claimyr thing besides people promoting it? 🧐

•I used it back in January when I had issues with my claim. It works exactly as advertised - they call for you, stay on hold, then connect you when a person answers. Beats calling yourself for days.

•It's not some magical solution - they just automate the calling and holding process. Still have to deal with the unemployment office yourself once connected, but at least you don't waste hours listening to that awful hold music.

MAKE SURE you have documents ready when you finally get through to someone! They'll want your employment history for the past 18 months, including exact start/end dates and employer contact info. Also have your ID ready. They've gotten super strict about verification since all the fraud cases.

This is such a common issue right now! I had the exact same problem last month - my BYE date passed and the system just wouldn't show the option to file a new claim. I tried everything - different browsers, clearing cache, logging in/out multiple times. Nothing worked. The problem is definitely on their end - their system has been having issues since they did some updates earlier this year. You're going to need to speak with an actual person to get it sorted out. I know calling is a nightmare right now, but that's really the only way to get this fixed. When you do get through, they can file the new claim for you over the phone pretty quickly. Just make sure you don't let too much time pass - you want to get this resolved before your extension runs out completely. And like someone else mentioned, keep certifying on your current claim until this gets sorted out to avoid any gaps. Good luck!
