NY Unemployment Benefits: Does 0 'Effective Days Remaining' Mean Benefits Exhausted with $504 Weekly Amount Before February 2022 End Date?

I'm not sure how to interpret my current claim status. I noticed my 'Effective Days Remaining' shows 0 on my account summary. My details show: Start/Effective Date: 02/01/2021 Benefit Year Ending Date: 02/06/2022 Weekly Benefit Amount: $504.00 Maximum Amount Payable: $19,656.00 Effective Days Remaining: 0 I've been receiving unemployment benefits since February 2021, and my benefit year is set to end on February 6, 2022. My weekly benefit amount is $504.00, and the maximum amount I could receive over the course of my claim was $19,656.00. But now I see that my "Effective Days Remaining" shows a zero. Does this zero days remaining mean I've used up all my benefits? I thought I might still have some weeks left before my benefit year ends in February, but maybe I've already received the maximum amount? If that's the case, does anyone know where I can find the link to submit a new application? Would I qualify for an extension or would I need to file a completely new claim? I've searched everywhere but the website navigation is so confusing. The unemployment system website is really hard to navigate and I can't seem to find clear instructions on what to do when your days remaining hits zero. Has anyone else been in this situation? I'm getting worried because I still need these benefits. Thanks for any help!

Yep, zero days remaining means you've exhausted your benefits. The system allocates a certain number of days for your benefit year and you've used them all up. You'll need to file a new claim if you're still unemployed. Go to labor.ny.gov and look for the section that says "File A New Claim" or something similar. Make sure you have all your employment info for the past 18 months ready before you start.

Thank you! So I shouldn't just click "recertify" for weekly benefits? I need to start a completely new application?

Exactly. Recertify is only for when you still have days left. You need to file a completely new claim since yours is exhausted. Good luck!

Just make sure you actually qualify for a new claim. You need to have worked and earned enough since your last claim started to be eligible again.

I was in your exact situation last month! I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual human at unemployment after I tried calling for DAYS with no luck. They got me a callback from a real agent who explained everything and helped me file a new claim. Best money I ever spent after stressing about my benefits. Check out their site at claimyr.com or watch this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this for real? Seems too good to be true. I've been trying to get through for weeks. What exactly do they do?

100% real. They basically call unemployment for you and stay on hold, then when a rep answers, they connect the call to your phone. The agent helped me understand my options and fixed my claim issue in like 10 minutes. After 3 weeks of trying myself, it was such a relief.

wait does this actually work? sounds like some sort of scam tbh 🤔

Not a scam at all! Used it twice now - they just dial for you and connect when someone answers. The unemployment agent even told me lots of people are using services like this now because its impossible to get through otherwise.

I tried calling 57 times yesterday and nothing. I might check this out. The website looks legit.

Yes, zero effective days = no more benefits on this claim. If you've worked since your benefit year began, you might qualify for a new claim. Go to labor.ny.gov > Unemployment > File New Claim. But heads up, you need to have earned enough wages in your base period to qualify again.

I ran into this exact problem a few weeks ago and spent 4 HOURS on hold trying to talk to someone. The system is absolute garbage. When they finally picked up they just told me to file a new claim online which I could have done without wasting half my day on the phone 🤬

Pro tip: call right when they open. I got through after only 45 mins that way.

I tried that too! Called at 8:00:01am and still got the 'high call volume' message 😭

Here's what's actually happening: Your claim has what they call "effective days" - each full week of benefits uses up 4 effective days (it's a weird system NY uses). So when it says 0 days left, that means you've used all your available benefits for this benefit year. You have two options now: 1) If you've worked since your original claim started in April 2022, you can file a new claim online. You'll need to have earned wages in at least two quarters of your base period. 2) If you haven't worked enough, you might be eligible for an extension depending on current programs (though most COVID extensions have ended). The easiest way to handle this is to get a direct answer from NYSDOL. But instead of wasting days trying to call them, I recommend using claimyr.com - they'll get you a callback from an actual agent. I had the same zero effective days issue and was completely confused until I talked to someone who explained my exact situation. The agent will be able to tell you if you qualify for a new claim and can even help you file it over the phone. Talking to a real person saved me weeks of uncertainty and waiting.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! This makes a lot more sense now. I did work a temporary job for about 3 months last fall, so maybe that will help me qualify for a new claim.

Is that claimyr service worth it? I've been trying to reach unemployment for a similar issue.

Absolutely worth every penny. I spent two weeks trying to get through myself and got nowhere. With Claimyr I was talking to an agent in about 2 hours. My back benefits were released the next day.

the whole NY unemployment system is a joke tbh. they make everything confusing on purpose so people just give up trying to get benefits they deserve.

This is facts 💯 They owe me 6 weeks of backpay and I cant even get someone to look at my claim

same i got locked out of my account for "suspicious activity" and now I can't certify. trying calling just puts me in the endless hold cycle

Protip: before filing a new claim, check if you qualify. You need to have worked and earned money AFTER your original claim started. If you haven't worked since Apr 2022, a new claim will just get denied and you'll waste time.

hey so i went thru this exact thing in march! you needa file a new claim not recertify. and btw if ur having trouble getting thru on phone (i tried for 2 weeks straight!!) use claimyr.com - they got me a callback within a few hours and the agent explained everything. saved my sanity fr 😩

I spent an entire day calling the NY unemployment number and got nowhere. I finally contacted my state representative's office and they helped me get through. Try that if you're desperate! Sometimes they have direct lines to the department.

Your benefit year doesn't end until April 2023, but you've used all your effective days. So yeah, your benefits are exhausted. If you worked since filing that claim you might be eligible for a new one. Otherwise you're outta luck until your benefit year ends.

Ethan Clark

So even if I'm out of effective days I need to wait until April 2023 before I can file again? That's a long time with no income...

0 coins

Zainab Omar

Not necessarily. If you worked after April 2022 when your claim started, you might qualify for a new claim now. It's not about waiting for the year to end - it's about whether you've earned enough wages since filing to qualify again.

Fun fact: the "effective days" system is a relic from the 1930s when NY unemployment was first created. Most states just count weeks, but NY divides each week into 4 "effective days" (makes no sense I know). So 0 effective days = you've used all your benefits.

lol why am i not surprised NY is using some ancient system from nearly 100 years ago 🤡

Zero effective days means you've used your maximum benefit amount of $18,672. You had about 38 weeks worth (38 × $489 = ~$18,672) and now they're gone. File a new claim if you worked during your benefit year.

Try calling (888) 209-8124 early in the morning like 7:55am (they open at 8) and keep hitting 0 repeatedly when the automated system picks up. Sometimes this bypasses the queue. Worked for me once!

This used to work but they caught on. Now it just puts you in the regular queue. 😩

Use claimyr.com instead. Way easier than these phone tricks that don't work anymore. They got me a callback when I couldn't get through for weeks.

Ya your benefits are done. I was in the same situation and finally got through to them after using claimyr.com - agent told me I needed to file a whole new claim since mine was exhausted. Getting through to a human was literally the only way I got a straight answer.
