NY unemployment claim stuck at $0 since March 2021 - benefits show $0.00 weekly amount with 104 days remaining, facing eviction after 50+ calls

My previous unemployment benefits expired in May 2021 and I immediately filed a new claim. It's now October and I haven't received a single payment. When I check my account online, it shows my new claim starting 03/29/2021 with a benefit year ending 04/03/2022, but both my weekly benefit amount and maximum amount payable are stuck at $0.00. I still have 104 effective days remaining. Every transaction since 09/03/2021 just says: "We are continuing to work on your application and are determining the amount of benefits you will receive. You may get a call from us if we require further information. You will receive a status update as your application progresses through the system." All my weekly certifications show $0 under the "Effective Days" column, even though they should be weekly payments for $700. My account online literally displays: Start/Effective Date: 03/29/2021 Benefit Year Ending Date: 04/03/2022 Weekly Benefit Amount: $0.00 Maximum Amount Payable: $0.00 Effective Days Remaining: 104 I've called over 50 times and either get disconnected or can't get through to anyone who can actually help. The system recognizes I have a claim and shows all my information, but won't actually pay me anything. I'm about to be evicted from my apartment and have no income. I've been waiting for almost 7 months now with zero progress and zero explanation. My savings are completely depleted. Does anyone know how to get this fixed? Is there a specific department I should be asking for when I call? Should I file an appeal or complaint somewhere? I'm desperate at this point.

The exact same thing happend to me back in August. My benefits ended one week and when I refiled the next week nothing happened for 3 months! I finally got thru to someone who told me there was a "glitch" in my claim and they needed to manually override something. They fixed it on the spot and I got all my backpay in 3 days. Keep trying to reach them everyday!!

It took me FOREVER but I finally just stayed on hold for almost 4 hours one day. I started calling right when they opened and just didn't hang up.

After trying for weeks to get someone on the phone at ny unemployment, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They called and stayed on hold for me, then connected me to an agent when they finally picked up. It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid. After one call with an agent they fixed everything and I got all my back pay within a week. Check out this video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds like one of those scams that prey on desperate unemployed ppl. i'm not giving my money to some random site 🙄

It's actually not sketchy at all. They don't ask for any personal info about your claim. They just call the unemployment office and wait on hold for you, then connect you when a real person answers. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast after months of nothing.

I was super skeptical too but I tried it after 2 months of not getting through. It actually worked and now my claim is fixed. They don't need any of your unemployment info, they just do the waiting for you.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? been trying to call for weeks 😩

It 100% worked for me. After they connected me to an agent, I explained my situation and they fixed everything in about 15 minutes. Got all my back pay the next week.

This is exactly why I've given up on NY unemployment. The system is completely broken. I've been waiting 7 months and nothing. Just gonna find a new job and forget about the money they owe me. Not worth the stress.

Try emailing your state senator or assembly person!! I was stuck in the same situation for 3 months and nothing was happening. I emailed my state senator's office with all the details and someone from their constituent services called me back the next day. They have special contacts at unemployment who can escalate cases. Within a week my claim was fixed and I got all my back pay.

Thank you! Do you just find their contact info on the NY state website?

Yep! Just google "NY state senator" + your district or area and you'll find them. Make sure to include your claim number, last 4 of SSN, and a detailed description of your issue. They're usually really helpful!

I did this too and it worked! My assemblyperson's office got it fixed in 2 weeks when I'd been stuck for 4 months. Def worth trying.

Sounds like your claim might be stuck in identity verification limbo. When my new claim showed $0 it was because they flagged it for ID verification but never sent me the notice to upload documents. Check ur inbox on the portal AND ur email spam folder to see if they sent u anything. If not, you definitely need to get someone on the phone ASAP.

Dylan Hughes

I checked everything and there's nothing about ID verification. No messages or emails at all except the generic "keep certifying weekly" ones.

Then ur definitely gonna need to talk to someone. Try the claimyr.com thing that other person mentioned. My cousin used it after being stuck for months and it worked.

Here's what I've learned after dealing with NY unemployment for the past 18 months: First, the $0 showing on your account is definitely a system error. Your claim is either stuck in ID verification, has a flag for previous employer dispute, or got caught in their fraud detection system. Since you're reapplying after a previous claim, it's common for the system to flag these for manual review. Here's what you should do: 1. Keep certifying every week no matter what! Even though it shows $0, once they fix your claim you'll get all back pay for weeks properly certified. 2. Call early morning (7:30am) or late afternoon (around 4:30pm) when call volumes are lower. 3. If regular calls don't work, try the different department numbers to get into the system. Sometimes calling the employer line or the PUA line will connect you to someone who can transfer you. 4. Email your state representative AND your state senator - do both! They have special contacts. 5. Try using claimyr.com which will wait on hold for you - it's the only way I could talk to a live agent after weeks of trying. 6. If all else fails, file a complaint with the NY Department of Labor through their official complaint form. Don't give up! I was in exactly your situation and eventually got all my back pay (over $8000). It's infuriating but you'll get your money eventually.

Thank you SO MUCH for this detailed response. I'm going to try all of these starting tomorrow. Did you eventually get your issue fixed by talking to an agent?

Yes, after 3 months I finally got through to an agent who fixed it in about 10 minutes (after spending over 20 hours total trying to reach someone!). The agent said my claim had a 'monetary hold' that needed to be manually removed. Once they did that, all my back pay came within 5 days.

are u sure u qualified for a new claim? when my benefit year ended, I had to have earned enough wages during my benefit year to qualify for a new claim. if not, i had to go on the extended benefits which is a different process.

0 coins

-

Dylan Hughes

I worked for about 4 months during my previous benefit year so I should qualify. But even if I don't, shouldn't they tell me that instead of just showing $0 and "we're working on it" for months?

ya thats the problem with ny unemployment... they dont tell u anything! But that sounds right that u should qualify. def need to talk to someone.

Dealing with ny unemployment is worse than a root canal without anesthesia 🤮 I feel your pain. After my claim got stuck for 2 months I ended up having to contact the ombudsman office. Google "ny unemployment ombudsman" and you'll find their contact info. They're supposed to help with claims that have been stuck too long.

I had the exact same issue!!! After my year ended I reapplied and got stuck at $0 for months. Turned out they were waiting for info from my last employer but never bothered to tell me. Total clown show. 🤡

Yea I finally got through after like 30 tries. The lady was actually super nice and fixed it while I was on the phone. She said they were supposed to send me a letter asking for more info but it never went out. Classic.

The same thing happened to me and I was pulling my hair out for months!! It turns out my claim had a "monetary hold" because they couldn't verify my income from the base period. I finally got through using that Claimyr service someone mentioned above (claimyr.com) and the agent saw the problem immediately. Had to fax (yes, FAX in 2021!!) some additional pay stubs and then they released everything. Got 14 weeks of backpay all at once. Keep trying!

omg they seriously made u fax something? what is this, 1995? 💀

I KNOW RIGHT?! I had to go to a UPS store and pay like $8 to send a fax. I didn't even know fax machines still existed lol. But whatever, I got my money so I can't complain.

This sucks so bad, I'm sorry ur dealing with this. The $0 thing happened to my roommate too. She had to send in her birth certificate and social security card because they couldn't verify her identity even though she had been collecting for a year already! The system makes no sense.

I literally just fixd this same problem yesterday! I'd been stuck since April with $0 benefits. You HAVE to talk to a specialist, not just the first tier customer service. Ask specifically for a "claims specialist" or a "tier 2 agent" when you get through. The regular agents don't have the authority to fix these kinds of problems.

I used claimyr.com after spending weeks trying on my own. Cost me some $ but saved me hours of frustration and got my benefits unlocked, so totally worth it.

Have u tried going to one of the in-person DOL offices? I know they reopened some of them recently. Might be worth a trip if ur close to one.

whatever you do DONT STOP CERTIFYING WEEKLY!! even if its showing $0. I made that mistake and lost 8 weeks of backpay because i stopped certifying when nothing was happening. They will only backdate for weeks you certified for.

Have you tried tweeting at @NYSLabor? I've heard of people getting help that way when all else fails. Make your tweet public and be polite but firm about how long you've been waiting.

I did this and got a DM asking for my info. They never followed up after I sent it tho 🙄

Keep trying! Sometimes you have to tweet multiple times. Also try tagging your local news stations - they looove doing stories about unemployment issues and that can put pressure on NYSDOL.

Sorry youre going thru this. My advice is to call RIGHT when they open at 8am. Thats the only time I've ever been able to get thru without waiting 3+ hours. Also press the options for "payment not received" rather than "filing a new claim" - those queues seem to be shorter.

I think its a glitch in there system. My husband had the same issue. His claim was stuck at $0 for 2 months. When he finally got someone on the phone they said it was becuz the computer system flagged his claim for "potential fraud" for no reason. Once the agent looked at it they cleared the flag and he got all his money in 3 days. So frustrating!!

I spent 3 months calling NY unemployment every single day with no luck. Finally broke down and used claimyr.com after seeing it recommended here. Got connected to an agent in 2 hours who fixed my claim on the spot. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human and this was the only way I could make that happen after months of trying. My backpay hit my account 5 days later.

I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after 3 months of nothing. They literally just wait on hold instead of you. When an agent answers, they connect you. That's it. It was the only thing that worked after hundreds of calls on my own.
