NY Unemployment BYE date passed - no option to file new claim showing

My NY unemployment BYE (Benefit Year End) date just became March 2025, but I can't find the option to file a new claim anywhere on the website. My benefits were extended a few weeks ago, and now that my BYE passed, I expected to see a button or link to start a new claim, but there's nothing there. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a delay between when your benefit year ends and when you can file a new claim? I'm getting anxious because I still need these benefits.

There's usually a 1-3 day system update period after your BYE date before the 'File A New Claim' button appears on your dashboard. If it's been more than 3 days, you might need to call NYSDOL directly. One important thing to check - are you still able to certify for benefits? If yes, then your claim might have been automatically extended and you don't need to file a new one yet.

Thanks for responding! It's only been 2 days so maybe that's why. And yes, I can still certify, but I'm confused because I thought once BYE hits you HAVE to file a new claim no matter what?

sometimes the website glitches and doesnt show all the options. try logging out clearing your browser cookies then log back in. worked for me last month

I'll definitely try that! Didn't think about browser issues. Will update if it works.

The rules changed in January 2025. Now if you have an existing claim with a balance and your BYE date passes, the system automatically evaluates if you're eligible for an extension before showing the option to file a new claim. Check your message inbox on the portal - you should have received a notification about this. If you're still able to certify, it means your claim was extended and you don't need to file a new one right now. The system will prompt you when you actually need to file a new claim.

This is CORRECT. The same thing happened to me in February. I was so confused but then realized they changed the system. As long as you can certify you're good!!!

Wow, I had no idea about this change! I'll check my inbox. I've been certifying weekly without issues so I guess that means I'm on the extension? This is a relief, thank you!

I HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM last month!!! My BYE date was Feb 12 and no option to file new claim. Called for THREE DAYS straight and couldn't get through. RIDICULOUS system. Finally found out I didn't need to file new claim yet because I was on extension. The website should CLEARLY explain this but nooooo that would be too helpful 🙄

Sounds exactly like my situation! Did you eventually have to file a new claim or did they just keep extending you?

They kept extending me for about 6 more weeks, then I got a message saying I needed to file a new claim. The system finally showed the button when it was actually time.

This is what happened with my brother-in-law too. He worried for nothing and the system eventually prompted him when it was actually time to file the new claim. The NY unemployment system actually works better now than it did last year with these automatic extensions.

If you need to speak to an agent urgently about this, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). After struggling to get through for days, I used their service and got connected to an NYSDOL agent in about 20 minutes. They helped clarify my BYE situation immediately. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. Saved me so much stress and I got a definitive answer about my claim status.

Thank you for this suggestion! If I don't get this sorted in the next couple days I might try this. Getting a straight answer would definitely help my anxiety right now.

To summarize for anyone finding this thread later: 1. If your BYE date passes but you can still certify for benefits, it means you're on an automatic extension 2. The system will notify you when you actually need to file a new claim 3. This is a change implemented in January 2025 4. Make sure to check your online inbox for notifications 5. If you're uncertain, calling NYSDOL is still the best option The important thing is to keep certifying weekly as long as the system allows you to.

Thank you so much for this clear summary! This whole thread has been super helpful. I'll keep certifying and wait for a notification. What a relief!
