When can I refile for unemployment after NYS Department of Labor benefits run out?

My regular unemployment benefits just exhausted last week after 26 weeks. I'm still looking for work but haven't found anything yet. Does anyone know when I can file a new claim with NYS Department of Labor? I heard something about waiting a year but I'm not sure if that's right. My benefit year started in March 2024 so I'm confused about the timing. Do I need to wait until March 2025 or can I file sooner? Really stressed about this because I still need income while job searching.

You need to wait until your benefit year ends to file a new claim. Since your benefit year started in March 2024, it won't end until March 2025. However, you should check if you're eligible for any extended benefits or other programs in the meantime. Also make sure you keep doing your weekly job searches even though you're not getting paid - it's required if you want to be eligible when your new benefit year starts.

Thanks! So there's no way to get any benefits until March? That's going to be really tough financially.

Actually you should still file your weekly claims even after benefits run out! I made this mistake and stopped filing, then when extended benefits became available I had to jump through hoops to get back in the system. Keep your claim active by filing weekly and doing your job search activities.

Wait really? I stopped filing after my benefits ended last month. Should I start filing again even though I'm getting $0?

Yes! File your weekly claims and keep your job search log updated. It keeps you in the system and makes you eligible if any extensions get approved.

I had the same situation last year and couldn't get through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about refiling. Spent hours calling with no luck. Finally used claimyr.com to get connected to an actual agent who explained everything about benefit years and when I could refile. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Way easier than trying to call yourself.

How much does that service cost? I'm already tight on money.

It's worth it to get accurate information instead of guessing. The agent I spoke with was really helpful about explaining the whole process.

I feel you, it's so frustrating when you can't get answers about something this important.

I'm in a similar situation - my benefits ran out a few weeks ago and I'm really confused about the whole process. From what I've been reading online, it seems like there might be some emergency assistance programs or food stamps that could help bridge the gap until you can file a new claim. Has anyone looked into those options? Also, I've heard that some people qualify for extended benefits depending on the unemployment rate in their area, but I'm not sure how to check if that applies to us in New York. This whole thing is so stressful when you're already dealing with job hunting.
