My Washington ESD unemployment claim expired what do I do - need help fast
I just realized my unemployment claim expired last week and I'm completely panicking. I was on standby status with my union job and thought I could just keep filing weekly claims indefinitely. Now when I try to log into my account it says my benefit year has ended. I still haven't been called back to work and I have no idea what steps to take next. Do I need to file a completely new claim? Will there be a gap in my benefits? I'm really stressed about this because I can't afford to miss any payments. Has anyone been through this situation before?

You need to file a new initial claim right away. When your benefit year expires, you can't just continue filing weekly claims. Log into your Washington ESD account and look for the option to file a new claim. The sooner you do it, the better.

•Thank you! I'll do that right now. Do you know if there will be a waiting period again?

•There might be a waiting week depending on your situation. Since you were on standby, it could be different but I'm not 100% sure about the specifics.

This happened to me too when I was on standby with the longshoremen. The key is to file your new claim as soon as possible after your benefit year ends. Don't wait because there can be delays in processing.

•How long did it take for your new claim to get approved? I'm worried about the gap in payments.

•Mine took about 2 weeks but that was during a busy period. Yours might be faster since you have a clear work history already in the system.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about your expired claim, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a system that handles the calling for you - saved me hours of trying to get through. Here's their site: claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is this legit? I'm desperate to talk to someone but I don't want to get scammed.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They don't ask for any personal info, just help you get connected to Washington ESD when an agent is available.

Wait, I'm confused. If you were on standby status, shouldn't your union have told you about this? My local always keeps us informed about benefit year expiration dates.

•That's a good point. I should probably contact my union rep too. I've been so focused on the Washington ESD side that I forgot they might have guidance.

•Definitely call them. They deal with this stuff all the time and know the ins and outs of standby benefits.

•Yeah I should have been more organized about it. Live and learn I guess.

•Don't beat yourself up about it. The system should really send better notifications about this stuff.

Also make sure when you file your new claim that you report any work you did during your previous benefit year accurately. Even if it was just a few days here and there, Washington ESD needs to know about it for your new claim calculation.

•Good point. I did work a couple short-term assignments through the union. I'll make sure to include those.

•Exactly. That work history could actually help your new claim amount too, depending on when you worked.

This exact thing happened to my brother last year. He was freaking out but it worked out fine. Filed a new claim and was back to receiving benefits within a couple weeks. The hardest part was actually getting through to ask questions about the process.

•Did he have any gap in benefits or did they backdate it?

•I think there was like a week gap but nothing major. He filed the new claim pretty quickly after realizing what happened.

The Washington ESD website has a section about reapplying when your benefit year expires. Look under 'File a New Claim' and it should walk you through the process step by step. That's what I used when mine expired.

•Perfect, I'll check that out right after I finish reading through these responses. Thanks for the tip!

•No problem. The website is actually pretty helpful once you know where to look.

I'm in the same boat! My claim expired two weeks ago and I've been trying to figure out what to do. This thread is super helpful. Going to file my new claim today.

One more thing about Claimyr - if you do need to talk to Washington ESD about your new claim status or have questions about the process, it's way easier than trying to call yourself. I spent literally hours on hold before I found out about their service.

•How much does it cost though? I'm already strapped for cash.

•It's worth checking out their site for the details. For me it was worth it just to avoid the stress of calling over and over.

The Washington ESD system is so confusing about this stuff. They should automatically notify you when your benefit year is about to expire, especially for people on standby status who might not realize.

•I totally agree. A simple email reminder would have saved me so much stress.

•They probably don't want to make it too easy because it costs them money. Just my cynical take on it.

Make sure you file your weekly claim for the week your benefit year expired too, even though you're filing a new claim. I think you can still get paid for that week under your old claim.

Ryan Kim
•Really? I thought once it expired I couldn't file any more weekly claims under the old one.

Jessica Nguyen
•I could be wrong but I think you can file for the last week. Might be worth asking Washington ESD about when you call.

Just went through this process myself. The new claim application is pretty straightforward if you've done it before. The hardest part is waiting for it to be processed and not knowing exactly when benefits will start again.

•That's what I'm worried about - the uncertainty. Bills don't stop coming just because my claim expired.

•I hear you. Try to file as soon as possible and maybe call to check on the status after a few days.

Been there done that. The key is not to panic and just follow the steps. File the new claim, keep all your documentation, and be patient with the process. It's stressful but it works out.

•Thanks for the reassurance. I'm trying not to stress but it's hard when money is tight.

If you're still having trouble reaching Washington ESD after filing your new claim, that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier might be worth trying. I used it last month when I needed to check on my adjudication status and it actually worked.

•Good to hear another positive review. I might need to try it if I can't get through on my own.

The good news is that Washington ESD is pretty used to this situation. Benefit years expire all the time and they have a process for it. It's not like you're the first person this has happened to.

Ryan Kim
•That's reassuring. Sometimes it feels like you're the only one dealing with these problems.

•Nope, definitely not alone. The unemployment system affects so many people that most issues are pretty common.

One last tip - when you file your new claim, make sure you have all your employer information handy from the past 18 months. It'll make the process go much smoother.

•Great point. I'll gather all that before I start the application. Thanks for thinking of that detail.
