What does the NY unemployment KeyBank card envelope look like when it arrives?

I've been expecting my KeyBank card for my unemployment benefits for about 10 days now. Getting paranoid that I might have accidentally thrown it away with junk mail. For those who've received it recently - does the envelope look like anything special? Is it marked as being from the Department of Labor or KeyBank? Or does it come in a plain white envelope that could easily be mistaken for junk? I'm checking my mail super carefully now but worried I might have missed it already. My mailbox is always stuffed with random credit card offers and I sometimes toss things without looking carefully.

It comes in a plain white envelope with a return address from KeyBank in Cleveland, OH. Nothing that says Department of Labor or anything about unemployment on the outside. I almost threw mine away thinking it was a credit card offer! The envelope is pretty nondescript.

Crap, that's exactly what I was afraid of. I definitely throw away stuff that looks like credit card offers without even opening them sometimes. Thanks for the info!

This is why they should make these more obvious! Same thing happened to my neighbor. She had to request a new card and waited another 2 weeks 🤦‍♀️

No problem. If you think you might have thrown it away, call KeyBank right away to cancel it and request a new one. Better safe than sorry.

I was stuck waiting forever for my card too, but I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to someone at unemployment who helped me fix my card issue. Seriously helped me get my benefits flowing when I was about to give up. They got me a callback with an actual person at ny unemployment instead of waiting on hold forever. https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait for real? is this actually a thing that works? im so tired of calling and getting nowhere with these people 😩

0 coins

Yeah it worked for me! No more sitting on hold for 3+ hours. Got a callback with an actual human who fixed my issue. talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast

sounds like an ad lol... has anyone else tried this?

I used it last month when my payments were on hold. Was skeptical but it was the only way I could talk to a live agent after trying for weeks. Worth every penny since I was missing out on WAY more in benefits.

another miracle solution... what's the catch? 🙄

0 coins

no catch, just a service that calls and waits on hold so you don't have to. when they get a person, they connect you. saved me hours of frustration

Mine came in a white envelope that said KeyBank on it. No DOL markings. I remember it had a Cleveland, OH return address. The actual card is inside on a piece of paper that you have to tear off. Definitely easy to miss if you're not looking carefully.

FYI you can also set up direct deposit instead of using the KeyBank card. Log into your ny unemployment account and there should be an option somewhere to add your bank info. I switched to direct deposit after losing my card and its so much better.

This!!! Direct deposit is way better. No fees, no waiting for a card, money goes right into your regular account.

You still need the card first tho. They make you activate it before you can switch to direct deposit. At least that was my experience back in February

0 coins

Really? I don't remember having to do that. Maybe they changed the process. The whole system is so confusing!

I had this EXACT problem. Threw mine away by accident. Had to call KeyBank to request a new one. The number is 1-866-295-2955. Took about 2 weeks to get the replacement. Super annoying, but at least when you get the new card, any benefits that were already paid will still be on it.

Xan Dae

Thank you for the number! I'll call them tomorrow. Did they give you any trouble about sending a replacement?

0 coins

Nah it was pretty easy. Just had to verify some info. They send replacements all the time apparently. Just be prepared to wait on hold forever unless you use one of those call services

The NY unemployment system is such a disaster. First they make it impossible to get through on the phone, then they send important financial instruments in envelopes designed to be thrown away. It's almost like they're trying to make it difficult for people to get their benefits.

PREACH! 👏 I swear they design these systems to be as frustrating as possible

Remember when the website kept crashing during the pandemic? I spent literally WEEKS trying to file my initial claim. Nothing changes with these people

Here's what worked for me dealing with all the KeyBank nonsense: First, don't panic if you think you lost the card. It happens a lot because of their terrible envelope design. Call KeyBank directly at 1-866-295-2955 to request a replacement. While waiting for the new card, set up your account online at KeyBank's unemployment debit card website. You can do this even without having the physical card - you'll need your social and some other info to verify your identity. Once you have online access, you can see if any payments have been deposited. If they have, you know your claim is being processed correctly at least. When you finally get your card, IMMEDIATELY set up direct deposit through the NY unemployment website. This bypasses KeyBank entirely for future payments. If you're having trouble reaching anyone at unemployment to help with card issues, I highly recommend claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold and get you a callback when there's actually a human on the line. Saved me hours of frustration and my benefits started flowing after one conversation with a real person. The system is frustrating by design, but there are workarounds. Hang in there!

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'm going to try all of this tomorrow.

Can confirm the KeyBank website setup works without the physical card. That's what I did when mine got lost in the mail.

You can also check if any money has been added to your card by calling keybank even if you dont have the card yet. You'll need your SSN and some other verification info. That way you'll at least know if payments are being deposited while you wait.

Yep white envelope from Cleveland. Fun fact: I got mine 3 MONTHS after my first payment was supposed to be on it. The DOL told me they had sent it but Keybank had no record. Eventually got a supervisor who admitted they had a backlog of card requests. Such a mess.

0 coins

3 MONTHS??? omg that's insane. how did you survive that long without your benefits?

0 coins

It was brutal. Had to borrow money from family. The worst part was nobody would give me straight answers about where my money was for months.

0 coins

this is why I hate the unemployment system. they make it so hard to get what we're entitled to!

PSA: Once you get your KeyBank card, you can transfer the money out to your personal account through their website/app. Don't leave your money sitting on that card - they charge inactivity fees if you don't use it for a while!

0 coins

True story 💯 I learned this the hard way and lost like $15 to inactivity fees

Does anyone know how long it typically takes for the card to arrive after your first payment is approved? I've been checking my informed delivery from usps every day...

0 coins

Took about 7-10 business days for me back in March

0 coins

mine took almost 3 weeks! the timeline they give is total bs

0 coins

If you're waiting that long something might be wrong. I'd call claimyr.com to get through to unemployment and check on it

0 coins

u might have better luck going to a keybank branch in person if there's one near you. My card never came so I went to a branch and they helped me figure out the issue

0 coins

Always open ALL your mail during unemployment, even if it looks like junk. I've had important notices come in very plain unmarked envelopes. The system is designed to be confusing.

0 coins

This!! I got an overpayment notice in what looked like a credit card offer. Almost cost me $2300!

i hate KeyBank with a burning passion. their customer service is awful and their website looks like it was designed in 2005. switch to direct deposit asap

LMAO so true about the website. Looks like my grandpa designed it 🤣
