Started new claim by phone last week but NY unemployment website says no claim exists - help!

So frustrated right now! I called the unemployment office last Tuesday and spoke with a representative who helped me file a new claim. She was really nice and walked me through everything, then told me I was all set to certify starting this Sunday. She specifically said "You're good to go - just wait until Sunday to do your first weekly certification." Well, Sunday rolls around and I log into the system to certify, but when I click on the certification section it says "You do not have a claim on file that allows you to certify for benefits at this time." What the heck? Did something get messed up in their system? Has anyone else had this problem before? I really need these benefits to start coming in since I haven't had income for almost 3 weeks now.

same thing happened to me! took them 4 days to actually process my claim in there system. i filed on a monday and the rep said i was good to go immediatley but when i tried to certify it showed nothing. by friday it was finally showing up. just keep checking the website daily and maybe try calling again if it doesnt show up by wednesday.

Thanks! That's reassuring to hear. I'll wait a couple more days before I start panicking then. Did you have to call them again or did it just appear?

it just appeared! the system is crazy slow rn... think of it as the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing 🤦‍♂️

The site usually updates overnight between 2-4am fyi. That's when I notice most changes happen to my account.

After hitting roadblocks for nearly 2 weeks trying to reach someone at ny unemployment, I stumbled across this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They basically called for me, stayed on hold, then connected me with a live agent when one picked up. Got my claim issue fixed in literally 10 minutes once I had an agent on the line! Talking to an agent got my benefits unlocked so fast. They also have this helpful video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've tried calling like 400 times this week 😫

Yeah it worked for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for days. The callback came in about 2 hours and I got my issue resolved in one call.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol how is this different from all the other "solutions"?

The difference is they actually stay on hold FOR you so you're not glued to your phone for hours. When an agent picks up, your phone rings and you're connected immediately. That's it.

Just went to claimyr.com myself and got through yesterday! My problem was different (payment stuck on pending) but talking to a human fixed it in minutes.

It doesnt process instantly. The rep should've told you that. Usually takes 2-3 business days for the system to update after you file a claim over the phone. Keep trying each day and don't worry unless it still isn't there by Thursday.

Welcome to the wonderful world of NY unemployment where nothing works as promised and the agents tell you whatever will get you off the phone fastest 🙃 This EXACT thing happened to me last month and I had to call back 3 times before someone finally fixed whatever was wrong in their system. Super annoying.

Ugh that's what I was afraid of 😖 Did you ever find out what was wrong, or did they just fix it without explanation?

lol nope they never explained. typical govt efficiency. just kept saying "its fixed now" without telling me what went wrong in the first place

They prolly didn't actually submit your claim even tho they said they did. ALWAYS get a confirmation number when you do stuff with unemployment. Ask for it if they dont give it to you. Without a confirmation number theres no way to prove you actually filed anything.

Oh no... I didn't ask for one. She gave me some kind of number at the end of the call but I didn't write it down because she said everything was all set. Lesson learned I guess 😭

Screen shot EVERYTHING when dealing with ny unemployment!! Every page, every confirmation, everything. Trust me on this - you'll need it when they inevitably mess something up.

Check your email spam/junk folder. Sometimes they send a confirmation email that you need to respond to before your claim is fully processed, and that email often gets filtered as spam.

Just checked and nothing there 😔 But good suggestion!

I think I know whats happening - did she file your claim as effective for next week maybe? Sometimes if you file midweek, they make the effective date the following Sunday, which would mean you cant certify until NEXT Sunday. Mightve been a miscommunication.

Hmm, she specifically said I could certify this Sunday though... but maybe she was confused? The unemployment system is so complicated 😩

half the reps dont even understand how their own system works. wouldn't surprise me if she gave you wrong info.

If you can't get through on the regular line, try calling your state representative's office. I was stuck in limbo for THREE WEEKS until I called my assemblyman's office. They have direct contacts at unemployment and fixed my issue in 2 days.

🚨 IMPORTANT ADVICE FOR EVERYONE DEALING WITH NY UNEMPLOYMENT ISSUES 🚨 After helping dozens of people navigate the unemployment system, here's what I've learned works best: 1) System delays are NORMAL. What agents tell you on the phone often takes 3-5 business days to actually appear in the system. Be patient. 2) If you need to speak with someone urgently and can't get through the regular channels, use Claimyr.com - they'll call for you and connect you when an agent answers. It's the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly. 3) Always write down confirmation numbers, names of representatives, dates/times of calls, and exactly what was said. 4) Take screenshots of EVERYTHING you do online. 5) If your claim shows "pending" for more than 3 weeks, that means it needs manual review and you MUST call. 6) The website is most reliable between 7-10am and after 7pm. Avoid midday when it's overloaded. 7) If all else fails, contact your state assembly member or senator - they have escalation channels. Hope this helps someone! The system is frustrating but navigable if you're persistent.

That Claimyr tip is golden. Saved me hours of frustration!

I'd add that you should check your payment method is set up correctly BEFORE your claim is approved. So many people get delayed because of direct deposit issues.

Its probably just a processing delay. But heres what I'd do: 1) Check again tomorrow morning 2) If still nothing, call again 3) if you cant get through try the online message center and explicitly say "I filed a claim by phone on Tuesday but it's not showing in the system" with all your info.

Thanks for the step-by-step plan! I'll try the message center if calling doesn't work. Didn't even think of that option.

Did the rep give you your benefit amount and weekly rate? If they did, then they definitely processed something. If not, then they probably just collected your info but didnt actually SUBMIT the claim.

Malik Jackson

She gave me an estimated weekly amount but said the final determination would come in the mail. Does that mean she submitted it?

yeah probably but the system is just being slow to update as usual. give it another day or two.

Try logging out completely, clearing your browser cache, and logging back in. Sometimes the website gets stuck showing old information. Sounds stupid but this fixed a similar issue for me last month!

Wait do you have a NY.gov ID or are you using your social and pin to log in? The two systems sometimes show different info. Try both ways if possible.

I'm using the NY.gov ID. Didn't know there were two different ways to log in! I'll try the other method tomorrow.
