EDD UI Online shows 'File a New Claim' instead of 'Certify' option - system glitch?
I'm totally confused right now. I've been certifying for my unemployment benefits every two weeks without any issues until today. When I logged into UI Online, instead of seeing the usual certification button, I'm only seeing options to 'File a New Claim' or 'Manage Existing Claim'. There's no way for me to certify for my weeks! My claim should still be active - I still have a balance and my benefit year doesn't end for another 3 months. Is this a glitch in the system? Has anyone else experienced this? I need to certify TODAY or my payment will be delayed, and I really can't afford that right now with rent due next week.

•But my benefit year end date says March 2026 when I check the claim details. Wouldn't it tell me if my benefit year ended? I'm so confused...

This usually happens for one of three reasons: 1. Your benefit year has ended (but you said it's still active through March 2026) 2. You missed certifying for too many weeks and your claim went inactive 3. There was a potential eligibility issue flagged on your account Go to your homepage and check your Notifications section - there might be a message explaining why certification isn't available. Also look under "History" to see when you last certified. If it's been more than 30 days since your last certification, the system automatically makes your claim inactive and you'll need to reopen it (not file a new one).

•Thank you! Just checked my history and my last certification was actually 5 weeks ago. I thought I had certified more recently but I guess I missed a couple periods with everything going on. That must be it!

The EDD system is GARBAGE!! Been dealing with this nonsense for 14 months now. One week everything works fine, next week it's broken!!! They do this ON PURPOSE to make people give up on their claims. Don't let them win!!

•They don't do it on purpose. The system just hasn't been updated properly since the pandemic. It's definitely frustrating but there's almost always a logical explanation for these issues.

Your claim probably went inactive because you missed certifying. You need to call EDD to reactivate it. Good luck getting through though - I spent 3 days last month trying to reach someone!

•I had this exact problem and wasted days trying to get through to EDD. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. The agent was able to reactivate my claim immediately and I could certify right after. Saved me weeks of stress honestly.

my cousin works for the edd and says they just did a system update last week so could be related to that? maybe try logging out and back in or using a different browser?

•I tried logging out and back in three times, and even cleared my browser cache. Still showing the same options. I'm going to try calling them tomorrow. Thanks though!

If your claim went inactive due to missing certifications, you have two options: 1. Call EDD and ask them to reopen your claim (fastest option) 2. Use the "Reopen Your Claim" option under the "Manage Existing Claim" section Whichever method you use, you'll need to answer eligibility questions again. Once your claim is reactivated, you'll be able to certify for all eligible weeks going back to when you last certified (up to the past 30 days). If it's been longer than 30 days since you certified, you'll need to go through the appeals process for those earlier weeks.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I don't see a "Reopen Your Claim" option anywhere, just "File a New Claim" - so I guess calling is my only option. Will update once I get through to someone.

One important note: do NOT file a new claim if your benefit year hasn't ended. That will create a duplicate claim in the system and cause even more delays. You need to reopen your existing claim, which requires speaking with a representative.

UPDATE: Finally got through to EDD this morning! The rep confirmed my claim went inactive because I missed certifying for a few weeks. She reactivated it right away and I was able to certify for the past 3 weeks. The backpay should hit my account within 48 hours. Thanks everyone for your help!
