EDD wants me to reopen claim right after approval - system error?

I'm completely confused and panicking a bit. Filed my unemployment claim about 2 weeks ago after being laid off from my warehouse job. Everything seemed to go smoothly - got the approval letter and even received my first payment of $450 via direct deposit yesterday! Feeling relieved, I logged into UI Online today to check when my next certification date would be, and suddenly there's a message saying I need to 'reopen my claim due to not certifying in a timely manner.' HOW?? I literally just got my first payment! Is this some kind of system glitch? I didn't miss any certification - I haven't even had the chance to certify yet since getting approved. Has anyone dealt with this weird situation before? Should I actually click 'reopen claim' or will that mess up my current approved claim?

Did you just ignore the message then? I'm worried if I don't do something they'll cancel my claim completely.

This is actually a common EDD system issue that happens when there's a timing overlap between your initial claim processing and the certification periods being established. Here's what you should do: 1. Do NOT click "reopen claim" as this can create complications in your existing claim 2. Wait 24-48 hours and check again - the system often corrects itself during overnight updates 3. If the message persists after 48 hours, contact EDD directly Your claim is still valid since you received payment. The system sometimes displays this message erroneously when your certification schedule is being established in the database. Just be patient and keep checking back.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I'll wait 48 hours before doing anything. Such a relief to hear it's a known issue and not just me doing something wrong.

EDD SYSTEMS ARE THE WORST!!! I had this EXACT problem in February and ended up waiting on hold for 3+ HOURS only to have them tell me it was "just a glitch" and I didn't need to do anything. Meanwhile I was having panic attacks thinking my benefits would stop. They seriously need to fix their ancient computer systems!!

Nope, payments kept coming normally once it sorted itself out. Just caused me a ton of stress for nothing!

I actually recommend using Claimyr when you need to reach EDD about these technical glitches. I was getting the same "reopen claim" message last month despite having an active claim. Spent days trying to get through on my own with no luck. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes who fixed it right away. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Really saved me from the frustration of constant busy signals.

Thanks for the suggestion! If it's still showing the error message after waiting, I'll definitely check that out. The thought of calling EDD and being on hold for hours is giving me anxiety.

The system says reopen claim when there's a gap between your approval and when the certification weeks become available in the system. I deal with UI all the time for my clients and here are the possibilities: 1. If you've received a payment already, your claim is active, not closed 2. Sometimes UI Online shows outdated status until their overnight batch process runs 3. The message might appear if your certification weeks aren't ready yet Just check your Certification section - does it show any weeks available to certify? If not, give it 2-3 days for the system to update. The reopen claim message should disappear once your certification weeks are properly loaded.

You're right! I just checked the certification section more carefully and there aren't any weeks showing up yet. That explains it. I'll wait for the system to catch up. Thanks for the expert advice!

Yes! The message disappeared after about 36 hours, just like the experts here said it would. My certification weeks showed up in the system this morning. All good now - just a weird glitch!
