EDD suddenly showing "Reopen Claim" while still working part-time - site glitch?
I've been on partial unemployment since January while working part-time (32 hours weekly) at a restaurant. This morning when I logged in to certify for my benefits, suddenly UI Online is showing "Reopen Claim" instead of the normal certification button. Nothing has changed with my employment - I'm still at the same job with the same reduced hours until at least December. Has EDD's system update caused this? I went ahead and clicked "Reopen Claim" and completed all the questions, but now I'm worried this might mess up my existing claim or delay my payments. Has anyone else experienced this sudden "Reopen Claim" message appearing? Did I do the right thing by completing it or should I have called EDD first?

This happened to me last month! It's usually because you missed certifying for one period (even if it wasn't your fault). When I called EDD, they told me their system automatically prompts for reopening if there's a gap in certification. I wouldn't worry too much - your claim should update within 3-5 days. Just make sure you keep certifying on time going forward.

•Thanks for the quick response! That's a relief. I could have sworn I certified on time for every period, but maybe I missed one with all the chaos at work lately. I'll keep an eye on my account over the next few days. Do you think I need to call them to verify everything is okay?

•Oh, I didn't know about the quarterly review! That makes sense since it's been about 3 months. Have you gone through this before? Did your payments continue normally after reopening?

Unfortunately, this is a common EDD system issue, especially after their recent website updates. What likely happened is that their system flagged your claim as inactive even though you've been consistently certifying. This is happening to MANY people right now! Here's what you need to do: 1. Wait 48 hours to see if your UI Online account updates and returns to normal 2. If it doesn't, you MUST contact EDD directly to have them fix it in their system 3. They need to remove the "reopen claim" status and restore your regular certification ability DON'T just keep waiting hoping it resolves itself - the longer you wait, the more certifications you might miss, which could affect your benefit payments.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation. It's been 24 hours and still showing the same status. I'll wait another day as you suggested, but I'm already dreading trying to get through on the phone lines. Last time I tried calling EDD, I spent almost 4 hours redialing before giving up.

After you reopen it takes about 10 days for the system to process everything. At least that's how long mine took when this happened to me in February. The worst part is you probably won't get paid for these 2 weeks while it's processing. So frustrating!!

•10 days?! I can't go that long without a payment right now. Rent is due next week. This is stressing me out so much. I wish they'd fix their system instead of making us jump through all these hoops.

This is a known issue with EDD's system that happens when there's either a quarterly review (as someone mentioned) or after certain system updates. Here's what's actually happening: When you're on partial unemployment with consistent part-time hours, the system sometimes incorrectly flags your claim as inactive due to the consistent earnings pattern. By completing the "reopen claim" process, you've done the right first step. However, you don't want to wait 10+ days for this to resolve itself. You need to speak with a tier 2 specialist who can remove the reopen status and immediately restore your normal certification access. The problem is getting through EDD's phone system. I had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a representative when this happened to me. They have a service that helps you bypass the busy signals and actually get connected to an EDD agent. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Once you reach a rep, specifically ask for a tier 2 specialist who can remove the reopen claim status and restore your regular certification access. They can fix this in minutes if you get the right person.

•DONT waste your money on those services!!!! EDD is a GOVERNMENT agency and they should be HELPING US not making it impossible to reach them!!! This is exactly what they want - for us to give up or pay money to reach them. DISGUSTING how they treat people who just need help!!!

•I understand your frustration with the system, but sometimes you have to weigh the cost versus benefit. In my case, waiting 2-3 weeks for payments to resume would have cost me far more in late fees and stress than the service cost. Everyone's situation is different, and I'm just sharing what worked for me when I was in a similar situation.

UPDATE: I called EDD this morning after trying for two hours yesterday with no luck. I finally got through and spoke with a representative who confirmed it was indeed a system error. She was able to remove the "reopen claim" status from my account and restore my regular certification access. She said I should be able to certify for the past two weeks by tomorrow morning. For anyone else experiencing this issue - keep calling! Ask specifically for them to remove the reopen claim status and restore your ability to certify. The rep mentioned this has been happening to many people who work part-time with consistent hours.

•So glad you got it fixed! How early did you start calling? I'm going to try tomorrow morning.

•I started calling at 8:00am exactly and got through around 8:45am. I think earlier in the week is better than later. Good luck!

This is great news! Just for future reference for anyone reading this thread later - this "reopen claim" issue seems to be triggered by either: 1. Missing a certification period 2. Quarterly review timing 3. System updates/glitches 4. Consistent earnings pattern (paradoxically) The key is getting through to an actual EDD representative who can manually override the system flag. Glad you got it sorted out without losing any benefits!

Just wanted to add my experience for anyone else who might face this issue - I had the exact same "Reopen Claim" problem appear out of nowhere last month while on partial unemployment. Like Fatima, I was panicking thinking I'd messed something up. The key thing I learned is that when you do get through to EDD (which can take forever, I know), make sure to ask them to check your "claim status flags" in their system. Sometimes there are multiple flags that get triggered, and they need to clear ALL of them, not just the reopen status. The first rep I spoke to only cleared one flag, and I had to call back again when the problem persisted. Also, if anyone is still struggling to get through by phone, I've had better luck using the "Ask EDD" contact form on their website for non-urgent issues like this. It takes 3-5 business days to get a response, but sometimes they can fix these system glitches without needing a phone call. Worth trying if you're not in immediate need of payments. Glad you got it resolved, Fatima! This whole system is so unnecessarily stressful.

•Thank you so much for sharing this additional info about the "claim status flags" - that's really helpful to know! I wish the first EDD rep had mentioned that there could be multiple flags. It's frustrating that we have to become experts on their system just to get our benefits. I'll definitely keep the "Ask EDD" contact form in mind for future issues. It's crazy how something as simple as working consistent part-time hours can trigger their system to think there's a problem. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience!

I'm going through this exact same issue right now! Woke up this morning to the "Reopen Claim" message and was completely confused since I've been consistently certifying every two weeks while working part-time at a retail store. Reading through everyone's experiences here is such a relief - I was worried I had somehow messed up my claim. Based on what everyone shared, I'm going to try calling EDD first thing tomorrow morning at 8am sharp. If that doesn't work, I'll try the "Ask EDD" contact form that Amara mentioned since I can probably wait a few days for a response. Thanks to everyone for sharing your experiences and solutions. It's so frustrating that EDD's system creates these problems for people who are doing everything correctly, but at least now I know I'm not alone and there are ways to fix it!

•Freya, you're definitely not alone in this! I just went through the same thing a few weeks ago and it was so stressful at first. One thing I'd add to what everyone else has shared - when you do get through to EDD, make sure to ask them to put a note in your file about the system glitch. That way if it happens again, the next rep will see the history and can fix it faster. Also, screenshot your account showing the "Reopen Claim" message before calling, just in case they need proof of the issue. Good luck with the 8am call tomorrow! The waiting and redialing is annoying but it's worth it to get this sorted out quickly.
