EDD glitch forcing me to reopen claim after only 2 weeks - just certified and got payment!
I'm so confused and starting to panic. My unemployment benefits stopped in December when I found temp work, but that ended 3 weeks ago. I reopened my claim online, everything seemed normal, and I got my first payment for $673 last week after certifying. But when I logged in this morning to check my account, it's telling me I need to reopen my claim AGAIN! The message says something about reopening if it's been 30+ days without certifying, but that makes no sense - I literally just certified two weeks ago and got paid! Has the EDD system glitched out? Do I actually need to complete this reopen claim form again or will that mess everything up? I can't afford to have my payments delayed because of some technical error.

dont reopen!!! i had this EXACT same thing happen 2 me last month, and when i reopened like the system told me to, it totally messed up my claim and put me into pending for like 3 weeks. call EDD first thing tomorrow morning to fix the glitch, or you'll regret it like i did.

•Oh no, that sounds awful! I definitely don't want to be stuck in pending. Thanks for the warning. Did you eventually get it fixed by calling, or did you have to do something else?

This sounds like their system glitch. It happens sometimes when their weekly maintenance doesn't process correctly. Try logging out completely, clearing your browser cache, and logging back in. Sometimes that refreshes the status.

•I just tried logging out, clearing cache, even tried a different browser. Still showing the same message about reopening my claim. I'm really stressed about this.

This is a known bug in the UI Online system. DO NOT reopen your claim when this happens if you've certified within the last 30 days and received payment. The system occasionally displays this message in error after their weekend maintenance updates. You have two options: 1. Wait 24-48 hours - sometimes the system corrects itself after the next nightly update cycle 2. Contact EDD directly to have them fix it on their end If you try to reopen when you shouldn't, it can trigger an eligibility review and put your payments on hold for weeks.

•Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I'll wait until tomorrow to see if it resolves itself. If not, I'll try calling, though I know that can be nearly impossible to get through.

•Ugh, that's what I'm worried about. Please let me know if she actually manages to get through and what they say about fixing it!

I deal with this issue regularly with clients. It's a system flag error that happens when EDD's automated system doesn't properly register your last certification. The good news is that it's fixable without reopening your claim, which would definitely cause delays. If it doesn't resolve within 48 hours, you'll need to speak with an EDD tier 2 specialist who can remove the flag from your account. The regular representatives can't help with this specific issue. I recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an EDD rep quickly instead of spending hours on hold. They have a system that gets you in the call queue and calls you back when an agent is available. Totally worth it for situations like this. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

•Thank you! I definitely need to speak with a tier 2 specialist then. I've never heard of Claimyr before but I'll check out that video. At this point I'd try anything to avoid spending my entire day on hold only to get disconnected.

this happens ALL THE TIME with EDD. their computer system is from like 1985 or something. one time i called and the lady told me they process things on mainframes!!! who even uses mainframes anymore??? but ya dont reopen ur claim or you'll be sorry. u have to call.

•Their system actually runs on COBOL which was developed in the 1950s! Imagine trying to process millions of claims on technology older than most of the people using it. No wonder there are glitches.

I'm still waiting for my issue to get fixed after almost 4 weeks. EDD's computer system is a disaster. I tried reopening as the system suggested and it completely messed up my claim. I've called over 50 times with no luck. Every time I get through they transfer me and then I get disconnected. I'm about to be evicted because of this. The whole system is designed to make you give up.

•I'm so sorry you're going through that. Stories like yours are exactly why I'm trying to be proactive about this. Hope you get it resolved soon.

Update: I waited 24 hours and checked my UI Online account again. The "reopen claim" message was gone and everything looks normal now. The system corrected itself after their nightly update. You might want to check yours again to see if the same happened.

•OMG - you're right! I just checked and mine is back to normal too! The reopen message is gone and it's showing my regular claim status again. What a relief! Thank you all for the advice and keeping me from making things worse by reopening unnecessarily.

This is such a relief to see that it resolved itself! I've been dealing with EDD issues for months and it's stories like this that give me hope. For anyone else reading this thread in the future - the key takeaway seems to be: if you just certified and got paid within the last 30 days, DON'T reopen your claim even if the system tells you to. Wait 24-48 hours for their system to correct itself, and if it doesn't, call for a tier 2 specialist to fix the flag error. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and helping Clay avoid what could have been weeks of payment delays!

•This thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm new to this community and dealing with my first EDD claim, so seeing how everyone jumped in to help Clay avoid a major mistake really shows how supportive this group is. I'll definitely bookmark this for future reference - the advice about waiting for system corrections and knowing when to ask for tier 2 specialists could save so many people from unnecessary headaches. Thanks to everyone who shared their knowledge and experiences here!

As someone who just went through the EDD system for the first time, this thread is incredibly valuable! I'm bookmarking this because the step-by-step advice here could have saved me weeks of stress. It's amazing how a simple system glitch can cause so much panic, but seeing how the community rallied to help Clay avoid reopening unnecessarily shows the power of shared experience. The key points about waiting 24-48 hours for system corrections and knowing when you need a tier 2 specialist are gold. Thanks to everyone who contributed their knowledge - this is exactly the kind of real-world guidance that EDD should be providing but doesn't!

•Exactly! I'm also pretty new to navigating EDD and this whole thread has been like a masterclass in what NOT to do when their system acts up. It's scary how one wrong click (like reopening when you shouldn't) can spiral into weeks or months of problems. The fact that Clay's issue resolved itself overnight just by waiting really drives home the importance of not panicking and making hasty decisions with EDD. I'm definitely saving this thread - the advice about system glitches, tier 2 specialists, and even tools like Claimyr could be lifesavers down the road. Thanks to everyone for sharing their hard-earned wisdom!
