EDD keeps prompting me to 'reopen claim' after each payment - causing delays

I'm super confused about why I keep getting prompted to 'reopen my claim' after every payment from EDD. This is now the third time it's happened, and each time it causes a frustrating delay in my benefits. I just certified two weeks ago and got paid, then logged in today to check my account and got the 'reopen claim' message AGAIN. It definitely hasn't been 30 days since my last certification, so I don't understand why this keeps happening. Is there something wrong with my UI Online account? Am I missing a step somewhere in the certification process? These delays are making it really hard to budget since I never know when I'll actually get paid. Has anyone else dealt with this reopening claim loop?

OMG THIS HAPPENED TO ME LAST MONTH!! The stupid system kept making me reopen my claim even though I was certifying regularly. I swear EDD's computers are from 1995 or something. I wasted 3 weeks dealing with this nonsense before I finally got it fixed.

That's exactly what's happening! How did you end up fixing it? Did you have to call them or was there something you did in your UI Online account?

0 coins

This is actually a known glitch in the UI Online system that happens when certain claim types get flagged for review but then automatically clear. The system doesn't properly update your claim status afterward. You're doing nothing wrong - it's on EDD's end. To fix this: 1. DO NOT submit another reopen claim request 2. You need to speak with an EDD tier 2 specialist who can reset your claim status in their system 3. Once fixed, it shouldn't happen again for your current benefit year Unfortunately, this requires reaching an actual EDD representative who has access to the claims management system.

Thank you so much for explaining this! I've been going crazy trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. Now I just need to somehow get through to an actual person at EDD...

same thing happend to me, just keep reopening it each time and eventually ull get paid. the systems broken but what can u do lol

Actually, repeatedly reopening your claim can create additional problems in the system and potentially flag your account for manual review, which causes even longer delays. It's better to get the underlying issue fixed by speaking with a representative.

I was stuck in that same reopen-claim cycle for over a month earlier this year. Tried calling EDD over 40 times and couldn't get through. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. They have this video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The EDD rep explained that my account had a 'stuck status flag' that needed to be manually cleared. They fixed it right on the call and my next certification went through normally without the reopen message. Seriously saved me weeks of stress.

is this legit? seems sketchy to use a 3rd party for edd calls

0 coins

It's completely legitimate. They just automate the calling process that gets you in the EDD queue. You still talk directly to an official EDD representative - Claimyr just handles the frustrating part of getting past the busy signals and 'maximum callers reached' messages. I was skeptical too at first.

Thanks for sharing this! I'll check it out. At this point, I'm desperate to get this fixed before rent is due next week. The delays are killing me financially.

This "reopen claim" loop happened to me too, but my issue turned out to be that I had answered one of the certification questions incorrectly (the one about being able and available for work - I said NO one week when I was sick). This triggered the system to think my claim was inactive when it wasn't really supposed to be. Did you answer anything differently on your last certification? Sometimes even small things can trigger weird system issues.

0 coins

I don't think I answered anything differently, but maybe I did without realizing it? I always try to be careful with those questions since I know they can affect payment. I'll double-check my answers next time.

Honestly the whole UI system is just garbage. I've been on unemployment 3 times over the past 7 years and every single time there's been some stupid technical issue that delayed my payments. And then they act like it's OUR fault when their system glitches out!!! Like sorry my need to pay rent is inconveniencing you, EDD!!!!!

ya this is why i always tell ppl to save some of their unemployment $ cuz u never know when edd is gonna mess up and ur stuck with no money for weeks

Update for anyone following this thread: I did some research and found that this specific 'reopen claim loop' issue has affected quite a few claimants in 2025. It appears to be related to a system update EDD implemented in February. The good news is that once it's corrected by a representative, it typically doesn't reoccur. When you do speak with EDD, specifically mention the 'claim status flag error' or 'phantom reopen claim prompt' - these are the terms their tier 2 specialists are using for this issue.

0 coins

This is super helpful! I'll definitely use those exact terms when I talk to them. Hopefully that will help them identify the problem faster.

i had this problem. turned out my employer was filling weekly protest reports saying i quit so the system thought my claim should be closed. the edd rep fixed it when i finally got through to one. check ur account for any employer protests maybe?

0 coins

Oh wow, I didn't even think about that possibility. I left on good terms (got laid off with a bunch of other people), so I don't think that's happening in my case, but it's good to know that could be a cause for someone else having this issue.

Update: I finally got through to EDD today using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. The rep immediately knew what was happening and said it was definitely a system glitch on their end. She fixed something in my account (took about 5 minutes) and told me I should be able to certify normally from now on without the reopen message appearing. She also processed my pending weeks while I was on the phone, so I should get paid in 24-48 hours! Such a relief after weeks of stress. Thanks everyone for your help!

Great to hear you got it resolved! This is exactly why speaking with a representative is so important for these system glitches - they can fix them quickly once you actually reach someone. Glad your payments will be back on track now.

That's awesome that you got it resolved so quickly once you reached someone! I'm dealing with a similar issue right now where my account keeps asking me to reopen my claim even though I've been certifying regularly. Reading through this thread has been super helpful - especially learning about the specific terms to use when talking to EDD. I'm going to try calling them tomorrow and mention the "claim status flag error" that Lincoln mentioned. It's so frustrating that these system glitches cause so much stress when people are already dealing with financial uncertainty. Thanks for sharing your update and letting us know it worked out!

Good luck with your call tomorrow! I hope you get it resolved as quickly as Diego did. It's really reassuring to know that once you get through to the right person, they can fix this glitch pretty fast. The hardest part seems to be just getting connected to someone who actually knows what they're doing. Definitely use those specific terms Lincoln mentioned - it sounds like that helps them identify the problem right away. Keep us posted on how it goes!

This thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm currently dealing with the exact same reopen claim loop - it's happened twice in the past month and I was starting to think I was doing something wrong. Reading Diego's update gives me hope that this can actually be fixed quickly once you reach the right person. I'm definitely going to try that Claimyr service since calling EDD directly has been impossible (I've tried over 20 times and either get busy signals or disconnected). It's so frustrating that a system glitch can cause this much financial stress, but at least now I know what to ask for when I do get through to someone. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and solutions!

I'm so glad this thread helped you too! I was in the exact same boat - calling EDD over and over with no luck. The Claimyr service really was a game changer for me. Just make sure when you do get through to mention those specific terms Lincoln shared about "claim status flag error" - it seemed to help the rep understand the issue immediately. The whole thing was fixed in minutes once I actually had someone who knew what they were dealing with. Hopefully you'll have the same quick resolution! It's such a relief to not have to worry about those random reopen claim prompts anymore.

I'm currently experiencing this exact same issue! It's so frustrating to see that "reopen claim" message pop up when you know you've been certifying regularly. I've been dealing with this for about 3 weeks now and was starting to panic that I'd somehow messed up my claim. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been such a relief - especially knowing that it's a known system glitch and not something I did wrong. I'm definitely going to try reaching out to EDD using those specific terms Lincoln mentioned about the "claim status flag error." It's ridiculous that we have to become experts in EDD's internal terminology just to get basic technical issues resolved, but I'm grateful for the community knowledge sharing here. Diego, your update about getting it fixed so quickly gives me hope that this nightmare might actually end soon!

0 coins

I totally feel your frustration! I went through this same exact nightmare a few months ago and it's such a relief to finally understand what was happening. The worst part is feeling like you might have accidentally broken your own claim somehow when really it's just EDD's system being glitchy. When you do get through to them, definitely be persistent about speaking to someone who actually understands this specific issue - I had to get transferred twice before finding someone who knew what a "claim status flag error" was. Also, don't let them just tell you to keep reopening it like some reps might suggest. You need someone who can actually go into the system and reset whatever got stuck. Hang in there - once it's fixed, it should stay fixed!

This thread has been a lifesaver! I'm dealing with this exact same reopen claim loop right now - it's happened 4 times over the past two months and I was convinced I was somehow breaking my own account. The financial stress of not knowing when payments will come through is absolutely crushing, especially when you're already dealing with unemployment. I tried calling EDD dozens of times but could never get through. After reading everyone's experiences here, I'm going to try that Claimyr service and make sure to use Lincoln's specific terminology about "claim status flag error" and "phantom reopen claim prompt." It's honestly insane that we need to become EDD system experts just to get basic issues resolved, but I'm so grateful for this community sharing solutions. Diego's success story gives me real hope that this can actually be fixed quickly once you reach the right person!

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this too! Four times over two months sounds absolutely exhausting - I can only imagine how stressful that must be financially. You're definitely not breaking your own account, it really is just a system glitch on EDD's end. I'm new to this community but I've been reading through all the advice here and it seems like everyone who actually got through to a knowledgeable EDD rep was able to get this fixed pretty quickly. The hardest part really does seem to be just getting connected to someone who understands the technical issue. I hope the Claimyr service works for you and that you can get this resolved soon. It's crazy that we have to jump through so many hoops for what should be a simple system fix, but at least there's a path forward. Keep us posted on how it goes!

Just wanted to jump in and say thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and solutions here! I'm currently dealing with this exact same reopen claim loop issue - it's happened twice in the past three weeks and I was starting to panic that I'd somehow messed up my certification process. Reading through all these comments has been such a huge relief, especially learning that it's a known system glitch from the February update and not something I did wrong. The specific terminology Lincoln shared about "claim status flag error" and "phantom reopen claim prompt" is incredibly helpful - I never would have known to use those exact terms when talking to EDD. Diego's success story with getting it fixed so quickly once he reached the right person gives me real hope. I'm definitely going to try the Claimyr service since regular calling has been impossible. It's frustrating that we need to become experts in EDD's internal systems just to get basic technical issues resolved, but I'm so grateful for this community knowledge sharing. This is exactly why forums like this are so valuable when dealing with bureaucratic nightmares!

I'm dealing with this same issue right now too! It's such a relief to find this thread and realize I'm not alone in this nightmare. I've had the reopen claim message pop up three times in the last month and I was convinced I was somehow doing something wrong with my certifications. The financial stress is unreal when you can't predict when your benefits will actually come through. I'm definitely going to try that Claimyr service and use those specific terms Lincoln mentioned. It's absolutely ridiculous that EDD's system has these kinds of glitches that cause so much anxiety for people who are already dealing with unemployment stress. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences - this community support makes such a difference when you're trying to navigate these bureaucratic disasters!

Wow, I'm so glad I found this thread! I'm currently stuck in this exact same reopen claim loop - it's happened to me twice in the past month and I was starting to think I was going crazy. Each time I get that stupid "reopen claim" message even though I've been certifying regularly every two weeks. The uncertainty of not knowing when I'll actually get paid is causing me so much anxiety, especially with bills piling up. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly reassuring - it's such a relief to know this is a known system glitch and not something I'm doing wrong. I had no idea about the February system update causing these issues. The specific terminology Lincoln shared about "claim status flag error" and "phantom reopen claim prompt" is going to be so helpful when I try to get through to EDD. I'm definitely going to try that Claimyr service since I've called EDD probably 30+ times over the past few weeks with zero luck getting through. Diego's success story gives me real hope that this can actually be resolved quickly once you reach someone who knows what they're doing. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and solutions - this community support means everything when you're dealing with EDD's broken systems!

I'm so sorry you're going through this stress too! Reading your comment really resonates with me because I know exactly how that anxiety feels when you can't predict your payments. The fact that this is happening to so many people really shows how widespread this system glitch is. It's completely understandable that you'd think you were doing something wrong - EDD's error messages are so confusing and unhelpful. I'm new here but I've been following this thread closely because I might face unemployment issues myself soon, and it's incredible how much knowledge this community has shared. The Claimyr service seems to be the real game-changer for actually getting through to someone who can fix this. Definitely use those specific terms Lincoln mentioned - it sounds like that's the key to getting connected to a rep who actually understands the technical issue. Hang in there, and please update us when you get it resolved!

I just wanted to add that if anyone is still dealing with this issue, I found another potential workaround while waiting to get through to EDD. Sometimes the reopen claim loop is triggered by browser cache issues on the UI Online portal. Try clearing your browser cache completely, or better yet, try accessing your account from a different browser or incognito/private mode. This won't fix the underlying system glitch that needs EDD to resolve, but it might help you certify in the meantime without seeing that annoying reopen message. I noticed when I switched from Chrome to Firefox, the reopen prompt didn't appear for my last certification (though I still plan to call EDD to get the root cause fixed properly). Just a temporary fix idea while everyone is working on getting through to an actual representative!

That's a really smart suggestion about trying different browsers! I never would have thought about cache issues potentially affecting the reopen claim prompt. It makes sense that EDD's ancient system might have browser compatibility problems on top of all their other glitches. I'm definitely going to try this while I wait to get through to them - anything that might help me certify without seeing that panic-inducing reopen message would be amazing. Thanks for sharing this potential workaround! Even if it's just a temporary fix, it could save a lot of stress for people dealing with this issue.

This thread has been incredibly helpful for me! I'm currently experiencing this exact same reopen claim loop issue - it's happened three times in the past five weeks and each time I panic thinking I've somehow broken my claim. The financial stress of unpredictable payment timing is brutal when you're already dealing with unemployment uncertainty. What really strikes me about reading everyone's experiences is how this seems to be affecting so many people, yet EDD hasn't issued any official communication about this known system glitch. It's frustrating that we have to rely on community forums to understand what's happening with their own system. I'm definitely going to try the Claimyr service and use those specific terms Lincoln mentioned about "claim status flag error." Emma's browser cache suggestion is also really smart - I'm going to try that immediately while I work on getting through to an actual rep. Thank you all for sharing your knowledge and experiences. This community support makes such a difference when dealing with EDD's broken systems. I'll make sure to update everyone once I get this resolved!
