EDD says 'reopen your claim' after first payment - should I click it?
Hey everyone, I'm totally confused about what to do with my UI Online account right now. I filed for unemployment about 3 weeks ago after being laid off from my retail job. My claim was approved last week and I actually got my first payment on my EDD Money Network card yesterday ($437). But when I logged in today to check something, there's now a button saying I may "reopen your claim" on my homepage! I'm freaking out because I don't understand why it's telling me to reopen when my claim was just accepted and I literally just got paid. Will I mess everything up if I click that button? Or will something bad happen if I ignore it? I've only certified for benefits once so far. Has anyone seen this message before after their first payment? What should I do?

DON'T click that reopen button!!! This is a known glitch in the EDD system that happens sometimes after the first payment. If you already have an active claim and received a payment, clicking 'reopen claim' can actually delay your next certification and payments by several weeks. As long as you can still access the certification section when it's time to certify (usually every 2 weeks), just ignore that message. The button sometimes disappears on its own after your next certification cycle.

•Omg thank you!! I was seriously about to click it. So I should just wait until my next certification date (should be this Sunday) and certify as normal? You think the message will go away after that?

I think this varies by situation honestly. In MY case, I had to click the reopen button because my claim had become inactive when I returned to work briefly then got laid off again. The system was actually correct in my situation. But if you've only certified once and just received your first payment, your claim is definitely still active. I'd recommend calling EDD to confirm rather than guessing. Of course, that's easier said than done with their phone lines...

•Yeah I've been trying to call but can't get through at all. Tried yesterday for like 2 hours and kept getting the message that they're experiencing high call volume. It's so frustrating! Does anyone know the best time to call?

I strongly recommend not clicking that reopen button if your claim is currently active and you just received payment. This is a very common UI Online glitch that confuses many claimants. Technically, the "reopen claim" option should only appear when: 1. You've stopped certifying for a period (usually 2+ certification periods) 2. You reported excessive earnings that disqualified you for several weeks 3. Your benefit year ended and you need to establish a new claim Since none of these apply to you based on what you've shared, it's almost certainly a system error. Just continue certifying on your regular schedule. If you continue seeing the message after your next certification, then you might need to contact EDD.

•This is really helpful! I definitely haven't missed any certifications since I just started, and I haven't worked at all since filing. I'll ignore the button and just certify on Sunday as scheduled. Thank you!

I had this same thing happen but i DID click the button and it was a nightmare! My payments got delayed for 3 weeks and I had to call them like 50 times. The lady told me I should never have clicked it because my claim was already active. Dont do it!!!!!

•That's exactly what I'm afraid of happening! Thanks for the warning. Did you eventually get it sorted out? Did they backpay you for the weeks you missed?

•Yeah they fixed it eventually but I had to talk to a tier 2 specialist. They did backpay me but it took forever and my landlord was NOT happy about the late rent. Seriously just ignore that stupid button!

By the way, for anyone struggling to reach EDD by phone (which is basically everyone lol), I finally had success with Claimyr. It's a service that connects you with an EDD rep without spending all day redialing. Saved me hours of frustration when I had a similar UI Online glitch. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km that shows how it works. The website is claimyr.com if anyone needs it.

•Yes, it actually does. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for a week to get through. Got connected with an EDD rep in about 25 minutes instead of spending days redialing.

wait is the message saying "you MAY reopen your claim" or "you MUST reopen your claim"?? the wording matters alot. if its MAY then its optional and u should def ignore.

•It says "You may reopen your claim if you stopped certifying for benefits and wish to claim benefits again." But I haven't stopped certifying! I just started! That's why I'm so confused.

•That confirms it's the common glitch everyone is describing. That message is specifically conditionally worded ("if you stopped certifying") and since you haven't stopped certifying, it doesn't apply to you. Just ignore it and continue with your normal certification schedule.

anybody else notice how EDD's system seems designed to make people mess up their claims? like why would they even show that button to someone who just got their first payment??? makes no sense!!

OK, late to this thread, but there's actually a way to double-check if your claim is active without calling EDD. Go to your UI Online homepage and check your Claim Status. If it says "Active" with a current Benefit Year End date, then your claim is fine and you should ignore the reopen button. Also check if you can see your next certification date listed. If both of these show up correctly, your claim is active regardless of what buttons appear.

•Just checked and my claim status does say "Active" with a benefit year end date of 4/15/2026! And my next certification date shows as this Sunday. That's a relief! I'll definitely ignore that reopen button. Thank you so much everyone for your help!

Just wanted to add my experience as well - I saw this exact same "reopen claim" button appear after my second payment a few months ago. Like others have said, it's definitely a system glitch that seems to randomly pop up for active claimants. The key thing to remember is that if you can still certify for benefits on your regular schedule and your claim status shows as "Active," then you're good to go. The reopen function is really meant for people who have let their claims go dormant by not certifying for several weeks in a row. I made the mistake of panicking and almost clicked it too, but thankfully found similar advice on here first. The button disappeared after my next certification and never came back. Hang in there and just stick to your normal routine!

•This is so reassuring to hear! I'm new to unemployment benefits and everything about the EDD system feels overwhelming. It's really helpful to know that this glitch is common and that I'm not the only one who almost panicked and clicked the wrong button. Thanks for sharing your experience - it makes me feel much more confident about just ignoring it and continuing with my normal certification schedule!

I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago! Got my first payment on a Wednesday, logged in Thursday and boom - there's the "reopen your claim" button staring at me. I was so confused because everything seemed to be working fine. After reading through forums like this one, I decided to ignore it and just continued certifying every two weeks as normal. The button stuck around for about 3 certification cycles and then just disappeared on its own. Never had any issues with my payments or claim status. It's definitely frustrating how the EDD system can be so glitchy, especially when you're already stressed about finances. But as long as your claim shows "Active" and you can certify on schedule, you should be all set. Don't let that random button mess with your peace of mind!

•Thank you for sharing this! It's so helpful to hear from someone who went through the exact same timeline - getting the first payment and then seeing that confusing button the next day. I was starting to worry that maybe something was wrong with my claim even though I just got paid. Knowing that the button eventually disappeared on its own after a few certification cycles gives me a lot of peace of mind. I'll definitely just stick to my normal certification schedule and try not to stress about it!

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! Filed my claim about a month ago, got my first payment last Friday, and when I logged in yesterday there was that "reopen your claim" button. I was so worried I had done something wrong or that my claim got messed up somehow. Reading through all these responses is such a relief - sounds like this is just another one of EDD's lovely system glitches that we all have to deal with. I checked my claim status like someone suggested and it shows "Active" with my next certification date clearly listed, so I'm going to follow everyone's advice and just ignore that button. It's crazy how stressful these little UI glitches can be when you're already worried about money and making sure everything goes smoothly with your benefits. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - this community is so helpful for navigating EDD's confusing system!

•I'm so glad I found this thread! I literally just went through the exact same thing - filed 3 weeks ago, got my first payment on my EDD card yesterday, and then saw that scary "reopen claim" button today. I was about to call EDD in a panic but decided to search here first. It's such a relief to know this is just a common system glitch and not something I did wrong. My claim status also shows "Active" and I can see my certification date for this Sunday, so I'm definitely going to ignore that button and just certify as normal. Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences - you probably saved me from making a huge mistake!

I just want to echo what everyone else has said - DO NOT click that reopen button! I made this exact mistake about 8 months ago when I was new to the system. I thought maybe I was supposed to click it to continue my claim or something, but it completely messed everything up. My payments got suspended for almost a month while they sorted it out, and I had to go through this whole appeals process to get my claim reactivated. The EDD rep I finally spoke to told me that clicking "reopen claim" when your claim is already active essentially tells the system that you want to close your current claim and start a new one, which triggers all sorts of red flags and reviews. The worst part is that during those weeks without payments, I still had to certify but wouldn't get paid until they resolved the issue. It was incredibly stressful financially. So please, just ignore that button completely! If your claim status shows active and you can certify normally, you're all good. The button will eventually disappear on its own.

•Oh wow, this is exactly the kind of horror story I was afraid of! Thank you so much for sharing what happened when you actually clicked it - that sounds like an absolute nightmare. A whole month without payments and having to go through appeals? That would have been devastating for me financially. I'm definitely convinced now to just leave that button alone. It's so frustrating that EDD's system is designed in a way that can punish people for trying to do the right thing. Like, if the button is there, you'd think it might be something you're supposed to click! But clearly their UI is just poorly designed and confusing. I really appreciate everyone in this thread sharing their experiences. I feel so much more confident now about ignoring that stupid button and just sticking to my regular certification schedule. This community has probably saved me from making a huge mistake!

I'm seeing this thread and wanted to jump in because I JUST went through this exact situation! Filed my claim 4 weeks ago, got my first payment deposited yesterday, and when I logged into UI Online this morning there was that dreaded "reopen your claim" button. I literally had a mini panic attack thinking I had somehow messed up my claim. After reading everyone's responses here, I checked my claim status and it shows "Active" with my benefit year ending in March 2026, plus my next certification date is clearly shown for this Sunday. So I'm definitely going to take everyone's advice and ignore that button completely. It's honestly ridiculous how EDD's system can cause so much unnecessary stress and confusion. Like, why would they even display that option to someone who just received their first payment? It makes no logical sense! But I'm so grateful for communities like this where people share their real experiences. You all probably just saved me from creating a huge mess with my claim. Thank you!
