Reopened ESD claim but no weekly claim option appeared - what went wrong?

I'm really confused about what just happened with my unemployment claim. I had to reopen my claim because I didn't file for a few weeks (was briefly working a temp job that ended). When I logged into my eServices account and went through the reopening process yesterday, it seemed to accept everything fine. But then... nothing happened? I expected to immediately see an option to file my weekly claim for last week since I didn't work, but the system just took me back to the homepage with no prompt to file. Now I'm worried I won't get paid for last week. Is this normal? Do I need to wait until my regular filing day comes around again? I can't afford to miss a week of benefits right now with rent coming up. Has anyone else experienced this after reopening?

This is actually normal. When you reopen a claim, it doesn't automatically prompt you to file for previous weeks. You'll need to wait until your next filing day comes around (which is based on the last digit of your SSN). So if your filing day is Sunday, you'll need to wait until this Sunday to file for the previous week. The system will then let you file for the week that just passed. Don't worry - you won't lose that week's benefits as long as you file when your day comes up.

Oh thank you! That's a relief. My filing day is Wednesday, so I'll try again then. Do you know if it will let me claim for last week even though I just reopened yesterday? I'm worried the system might think I wasn't eligible yet.

i had this same thing happen and freaked out lol. turns out u just wait for ur normal day. the reopening just makes u eligible again but doesnt replace the weekly filing

Thanks for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to know this happened to someone else and worked out fine. The ESD website is so confusing sometimes.

The ESD system is ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE at explaining this process!!! I went through the exact same panic when I reopened last year. They should have a big flashing message that says "NOW WAIT FOR YOUR FILING DAY" but instead they just dump you back on the homepage with zero explanation. I ended up calling them 37 TIMES before I got through just to be told to wait. Such a waste of everyone's time!!

I agree their communication could be better, but to be fair, this information is actually in their FAQ section. The problem is that it's buried among dozens of other questions. If you go to the ESD website and search for "reopen claim filing day" you'll find the explanation. They're working on a new user interface that should make this clearer, but it won't launch until later in 2025.

When I reopened my claim in January I had a similar issue but also discovered you need to double-check your "able and available" status wasn't reset. Sometimes reopening a claim can change some of your settings. When you do get to your filing day, make sure all your information looks correct before submitting!

I didn't even think about that! I'll definitely check all my settings when I file on Wednesday. The last thing I need is some technical glitch causing more delays. Thank you!

If you're worried about getting through to ESD to confirm everything is correct with your reopened claim, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. I was stuck in a similar situation and couldn't get through on the phones for days. Claimyr connected me to an ESD agent in about 25 minutes when I was expecting to wait hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 and their website is claimyr.com. Totally worth it to get clear answers directly from ESD rather than stressing about whether you did something wrong.

Just to clarify some confusion I'm seeing in the comments - when you reopen a claim, you're reestablishing your eligibility going forward. The system will allow you to claim for the week that just passed when your filing day comes up, but it won't automatically prompt you to do this right after reopening. Also, for the week you're claiming after reopening, make sure you answer the job search questions correctly. You still need to report your 3 job search activities for that week, even though you weren't technically "on" unemployment when you were doing them. This trips a lot of people up.

Oh! I didn't realize I still needed 3 job search activities for last week. I did apply to some jobs last week anyway, so I should be okay. Thank you for pointing that out - that could have been another issue!

when i reopened my claim last month the same thing happened but then i realized i reopened on a thursday and my filing day is sunday so i just had to wait. did u check ur correspondence folder? sometimes they send messages there about next steps but dont email u about them

Good point about checking the correspondence folder - I just looked and there's nothing new there. My filing day is tomorrow, so I'll try then and update this thread with what happens in case it helps someone else!

UPDATE: Everything worked exactly as you all said! I waited until my filing day (Wednesday) and when I logged in, I was able to file for last week with no issues. The system recognized that I had reopened my claim and let me complete everything normally. Thank you all so much for the help and reassurance! One less thing to stress about this week.

Great to hear! Glad it all worked out smoothly. Just remember to keep up with your job search activities each week so you don't run into any issues down the road.
