ESD claim restart confusion - filed to reopen but can't submit weekly claim after brief employment
I'm totally confused about my claim status right now. I was on unemployment, then worked for 6 weeks until July 10th when I got laid off again. I managed to find another job and started on July 19th, but I only worked ONE day that week. When I tried to file for the week ending July 20th (since I only worked one day), the system made me reopen my claim first. I entered all the new employer information and submitted everything, but now I can't find where to actually file my weekly UI claim for that partial week. Did I complete the process correctly? Is reopening the claim all I needed to do for that week, or am I missing something? Will I still get paid for those 4 unemployed days or do I need to take additional steps? The ESD website is so confusing!

When you reopen a claim, you typically can't file a weekly certification until the reopened claim is processed. It usually takes 1-3 business days for the system to update. After that, you should be able to access the weekly claim option. Log back in tomorrow and check if the 'file weekly claim' button appears on your dashboard. As for that partial week, yes, you should report the one day you worked and the earnings from it when you file the weekly claim.

•Thanks for explaining! So I need to wait for the claim to be processed first and THEN do the weekly certification? I was worried I'd missed the window to get paid for those days. Will check again tomorrow. I wish ESD made this clearer on their website!

i had the EXACT same thing happen in march!! it's super confusing right??? i think it takes like 2 days for the system to update after you reopen. don't worry about the weekly claim filing deadline - it'll give you a chance to backfile once your reopened claim kicks in

•That's such a relief to hear! I was panicking thinking I'd miss my chance to claim those 4 days. Did you get paid for your partial week after reopening?

•yep! got paid for the days i didn't work. just had to wait for the system to process the reopening then it let me file for the previous week. just make sure you report your earnings correctly for the one day you worked

I don't think you did it right. When I reopened my claim last year, I had to call ESD directly afterward to file for the partial week because the online system wouldn't let me backdate. The reopen process doesn't automatically file the weekly claim - those are two separate processes. You should call them ASAP before too much time passes.

•Actually, the system has been updated since last year. Now when you reopen a claim, you just need to wait 1-3 business days for processing, then you'll be able to file for that partial week online without calling. The weekly filing option will appear once the reopened claim is processed.

If you're having trouble getting through to ESD about this, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation with a reopened claim and couldn't get any help for weeks. Claimyr got me connected to an actual ESD agent in about 25 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent was able to process my reopened claim immediately and help me submit the weekly certification for my partial week.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I'll wait the 1-3 days first to see if it resolves itself like others mentioned, but it's good to know there's another option if I can't get through. Did they help you backfile for the missed week?

•Yes! The ESD agent I reached through them helped me backfile for the missed week and made sure I got paid correctly. Definitely worth it if you're still having issues after waiting.

•Sounds like this is pretty common then. Glad I'm not the only one confused by the process!

This is a common situation. Here's what's happening: When you reopen a claim, the system needs to verify your eligibility again based on the new information you provided. This typically takes 1-3 business days (sometimes faster). Once your reopened claim is processed, you'll be able to file your weekly claim for that partial week. Here's what you should do: 1. Wait 1-3 business days 2. Log back into your eServices account 3. Look for the "File a weekly claim" option on your dashboard 4. When filing, report your earnings for that one day of work 5. Answer all questions accurately regarding your work search activities If after 3 business days you still don't see the option to file a weekly claim, then you should contact ESD directly. This is normal procedure for reopened claims.

•Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! This makes a lot more sense now. I'll follow these exact steps and check back in a couple days.

The ESD system is GARBAGE!!! I've been dealing with them for years and every time there's a break in employment it's the same confusing mess. They NEVER make it clear what you're supposed to do. I had a similar situation and ended up not getting paid for two weeks because I didn't realize I had to wait for processing THEN file weekly claims. The whole system needs to be rebuilt from scratch!!!

•It's definitely not user-friendly! I wish they had clearer instructions or at least a warning that says "wait for processing before trying to file weekly claims" would have saved me a lot of stress.

Just to clarify one thing I didn't see mentioned: make sure when you do get to file your weekly claim that you accurately report your earnings for that one day of work. It's always better to overreport than underreport, as underreporting can lead to overpayment issues later. You'll still receive partial unemployment for the days you didn't work, as long as your earnings for that one day don't exceed your weekly benefit amount.

•Good point! I have my pay stub for that day so I'll make sure to report the exact amount. Would I report the gross amount before taxes or the net amount I actually received?

•Always report the gross amount (before taxes and deductions). ESD uses your gross earnings when calculating your weekly benefit payment.
